Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) play a critical role in the detection of microorganisms and the induction of inflammatory and immune responses. Using PCR and Western-blot analysis, this study investigated the differential expression in the intestine of 14 PRRs and nine associated cytokines. Thirty-two pigs were used to determine the expression of these markers (1) along the proximal/distal axis of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) and (2) between the intestinal segments and their ...

This work focuses on the corrosion of cast iron in a drinking water network. The study is performed in water and in a sandy soil saturated with the same water. In the presence of corrosion products, the inner wall surface shows a lower corrosion rate than the external wall. In the two media, impedance diagrams are described by a high-frequency loop characteristic of a protective corrosion layer and a diffusion impedance loop at low frequencies associated with oxygen diffusion. Different models involving ...

The electrochemical stabilization of archaeological cast iron, currently used in restoration and conservation, is designed to extract chlorides by applying an electrical field between the metal (object containing a metal core), which is cathodically polarized, and a stainless steel cage, which is anodically polarized. However, stabilization of artifacts in potentiostatic mode is a relatively long procedure and weakens the artifacts because of the hydrogen evolution when the applied voltage is too ...

We have analysed a large number of members of the IS66 family of prokaryotic insertion sequences which include three orfs (A, B and C) and we show that these are closely related to a second group (ISBst12) which includes only orfC, encoding the transposase TnpC. These two IS groups are also related by their terminal inverted repeats (IR) which show significant conservation. We propose that both groups be included in the same family, the IS66 family. We have also identified members of both IS groups ...

Arthrobacter arilaitensis is one of the major bacterial species found at the surface of cheeses, especially in smear-ripened cheeses, where it contributes to the typical colour, flavour and texture properties of the final product. The A. arilaitensis Re117 genome is composed of a 3,859,257 bp chromosome and two plasmids of 50,407 and 8,528 bp. The chromosome shares large regions of synteny with the chromosomes of three environmental Arthrobacter strains for which genome sequences are available: ...

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme of tryptophan catabolism through the kynurenine pathway. Intriguingly, IDO is constitutively and highly expressed in the mammalian epididymis in contrast to most other tissues where IDO is induced by proinflammatory cytokines, such as interferons. To gain insight into the role of IDO in the physiology of the mammalian epididymis, we studied both wild type and Ido1(-/-)-deficient mice. In the caput epididymis of Ido1(-/-) animals, ...

Abstract. Lineshaped contrails were detected with the research aircraft Falcon during the CONCERT – CONtrail and Cirrus ExpeRimenT – campaign in October/November 2008. The Falcon was equipped with a set of instruments to measure the particle size distribution, shape, extinction and chemical composition as well as trace gas mixing ratios of sulfur dioxide (SO2), reactive nitrogen and halogen species (NO, NOy, HNO3, HONO, HCl), ozone (O3) and carbon monoxide (CO). Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are beneficial microorganisms that colonize the rhizosphere of many plant species and confer beneficial effects, such as an increase in plant growth. PGPR are also well known as inducers of systemic resistance to pathogens in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms involved locally after direct perception of these bacteria by plant cells still remain largely unknown. Burkholderia phytofirmans strain PsJN is an endophytic PGPR that colonizes grapevine ...

ABSTRACT Probiotics and prebiotics, alone or together (synbiotics), can influence the intestinal microbiota and modulate the immune response. They may therefore be tools that can prevent or alleviate certain pathologies involving the gut immune system, such as allergies for which no treatment is yet available. This review focuses first on the definitions of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics and key cells in the gut immune system. It then discusses their effects on mucosal immune stimulation. ...

Wheat gluten proteins such as gliadins constitute major food allergens. Gluten can be modified industrially by deamidation which increases its solubility and enhances its use as a food ingredient. Sensitization to deamidated gluten has been reported to cause severe allergic reactions with anaphylaxis. The aim of this study was therefore to compare the sensitization and elicitation potentials of native (NG) and deamidated (DG) gliadins. The reactivity pattern of mice IgE was also compared with that ...

At the time of weaning, male offspring mice were separated from their mothers, weaned to the same solid diet as their dam and their growth was monitored until killed 48 d after weaning. Prebiotic ...

Abstract Insertion sequences (ISs) play a key role in prokaryotic genome evolution but are seldom well annotated. We describe a web application pipeline, ISsaga ( http://issaga.biotoul.fr/ISsaga/issaga_index.php ), that provides computational tools and methods for high-quality IS annotation. It uses established ISfinder annotation standards and permits rapid processing of single or multiple prokaryote genomes. ISsaga provides general prediction and annotation tools, information on genome context of individual ...

Abstract. The frequency of occurrence of cirrus clouds and contrails, their life time, ice crystal size spectra and thus their radiative properties depend strongly on the ambient distribution of the relative humidity with respect to ice (RHice). Ice clouds do not form below a certain supersaturation and both cirrus and contrails need at least saturation conditions to persist over a longer period. Under subsaturated conditions, cirrus and contrails should dissipate. During the mid-latitude aircraft ...

The Polar Nephelometer and the Cloud Particle Imager (CPI) instruments with PMS FSSP-300 and 2D-C probes were used for the description of the optical and microphysical cloud properties. Two selected cloud regions are compared and discussed in detail. Significant differences in optical properties are evidenced in terms of 22° halo occurrences even though ...

Duplex coatings combine an "active" protection provided by a metal deposit, playing the role of sacrificial anode to cathodically protect the substrate with "passive" protection of an organic layer, playing the role of a diffusional barrier to hinder transport of ionic species. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was measured during the immersion and an original physical model was ...

In grapevine Vitis vinifera L. cv Pinot noir, the Pathogenesis-Related (PR) proteins CHI4D and TL3 are among the most abundant extractable PR proteins of ripe berries and accumulate during berry ripening from véraison until full maturation. Evidence was supplied in favor of the involvement of these two protein families in plant defense mechanisms and plant development. Abstract. In this paper, we show that in mixed phase clouds, the presence of ice crystals may induce wrong FSSP 100 measurements interpretation especially in terms of particle size and subsequent bulk parameters. The presence of ice crystals is generally revealed by a bimodal feature of the particle size distribution (PSD). The combined measurements of the FSSP-100 and the Polar Nephelometer give a coherent description of the effect of the ice crystals on the FSSP-100 response. The FSSP-100 particle ...

Abstract. In this study the density of ice hydrometeors in tropical clouds is derived from a combined analysis of particle images from 2-D-array probes and associated reflectivities measured with a Doppler cloud radar on the same research aircraft. Usually, the mass–diameter m(D) relationship is formulated as a power law with two unknown coefficients (pre-factor, exponent) that need to be constrained from complementary information on hydrometeors, where absolute ice density measurement methods do ...
