Scientists have spent great efforts exploring self-recognition in non-human animals using the mirror test. In avian species, some of the passerines have passed the test, although the findings are still under debate. The present study aimed at investigating mirror self-recognition ability and making a comparative study of mirror responses in two avian species, the common hill myna from the Passeriformes and the African grey parrot from the Psittaciformes. The subjects underwent four stages of experiment: ...

Hematological values of Hill Mynahs were studied to determine their health or general condition. No statistically significant sex and age differences were found in blood composition except in leukocyt e numbers. Red blood cell number (3.17 - 3.85 x 10 mm ), hematocrit (46.67 - 48.60 %), hemoglobin content 6 -3 (13.59 - 14.32 g/dl) were not significantly different between adult and young birds in spite of the fact that female birds had smaller amount of these contents than their male counterparts whose values were ...

Iron overload is a very frequent finding in several animal species and a genetic predisposition is suggested. In one of the most commonly reported species with susceptibility for iron overload (mynah bird), it was recently shown that the cause of this pathophysiology is high uptake and retention of dietary iron. Here we compare susceptible (mynahs) with non-susceptible avian species (chickens) by evaluating iron uptake at the intestinal absorptive cell level. Enterocytes from mynahs and chickens were ...

Cysts of Sarcocystis kirmsei were found in the brain of an exotic bird. The morphological appearance of this protozoon and the changes in the brain tissue are described. This is the second report of S. kirmsei in the brain of a hill mynah, and the third report of this parasite in the avian brain. The affiliation of S. kirmsei to the genus Sarcocystis was confirmed. On the basis of our findings, the genus Frenkelia, which comprises two species affecting the brain of small mammals, becomes synonymous ...

Three types of neurons were identified in Golgi-Cox preparations of the telencephalic nucleus HVc of the mynah bird with the Sholl method. In a comparison of birds of 10 weeks and speech-trained birds of one year of age a reduction of dendritic spine density and an enlargement of the remaining spines was found in a large isopolar cell type. These findings are interpreted in terms of the mynah's shrinking potential with age to imitate new sounds and the stabilization of the acquired repertoire.

Thomas H. Turney,

Birds have been observed to refer to objects such as predators with characteristic vocalizations, but little is known of the processes involved. In order to study this phenomenon, two associations between visual concepts and imitative vocalizations were operantly conditioned in a Greater Indian Hill mynah. The mynah was successfully taught to say “hello” to pictures of persons and then to “bark” to pictures of trees. Correctness and latency data during acquisition and generalization tests to novel ...
