Abstract Understanding seasonal soil nitrogen (N) availability patterns is necessary to assess corn (Zea mays L.) N needs following winter cover cropping. Therefore, a field study was initiated to track N availability for corn in conventional and no‐till systems and to determine the accuracy of several methods for assessing and predicting N availability for corn grown in cover crop systems. The experimental design was a systematic split‐split plot with fallow, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), rye ( ...

Anand K. Inamdar, Andrew N. French, Simon J. Hook, Greg Vaughan, William E. Luckett,

Land surface temperature (LST) and its diurnal variation are important when evaluating climate change, land‐atmosphere energy exchange, and the global hydrological cycle. These characteristics are observable from satellites using thermal infrared measurements, but doing so at both high spatial and temporal resolutions has been difficult. Accurate temporal and spatial knowledge of LST is critical in global‐scale hydrological assimilation to improve estimates of soil moisture and evapotranspiration. ...

V. Vaughan Symonds, Greg Hatlestad, Alan Lloyd,

The molecular nature of biological variation is not well understood. Indeed, many questions persist regarding the types of molecular changes and the classes of genes that underlie morphological variation within and among species. Here we have taken a candidate gene approach based on previous mapping results to identify the gene and ultimately a polymorphism that underlies a trichome density QTL in Arabidopsis thaliana. Our results show that natural allelic variation in the transcription factor ATMYC1 ...

Stan Beckers, Greg Vaughan,

The authors examine the impact of fund size on investment performance. Ultimately every investment strategy will become self–defeating when too much money chases the same opportunity. It has therefore become common practice among successful fund managers to close funds to new money. It is mostly a mystery as to where and how this line gets drawn, especially since these restrictions are almost invariably lifted (with the pressure of increased client demand). Every asset management strategy has a natural ...

Abstract Global climate models (GCMs) are challenged by difficulties in simulating cloud phase and cloud radiative effect over the Southern Ocean (SO). Some of the new‐generation GCMs predict too much liquid and too little ice in mixed‐phase clouds. This misrepresentation of cloud phase in GCMs results in weaker negative cloud feedback over the SO and a higher climate sensitivity. Based on a model comparison with observational data obtained during the Southern Ocean Cloud Radiation and Aerosol Transport ...
