Abstract —An activation of protein kinase C (PKC) in acute myocardial ischemia has been shown previously using its translocation to the plasma membrane as an indirect parameter. However, whether PKC remains activated or whether other mechanisms such as altered gene expression may mediate an isozyme-specific regulation in prolonged ischemia have not been investigated. In isolated perfused rat hearts, PKC activity and the expression of PKC cardiac isozymes were determined on the protein level using ...

Electron-excited $4{d}^{10}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}4{d}^{9}4f$ transitions in clean La metal and tetravelent Ce${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ show systematic deviations from those observed in x-ray absorption. At intermediate primary energies simple selection rules allow a limited range of new singlet excitations, while triplet excitation becomes very prominent as the primary energy approaches threshold. With this technique a complete multiplet analysis of atomiclike core excitations has become possible for ...

Electron-energy-loss spectra of La, Ce, and Gd in the region of the $3{d}^{10}4{f}^{n}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3{d}^{9}4{f}^{n+1}$ excitations show doublet structures associated with each spin-orbit component. The relative intensities of the structures vary systematically with excitation energy, the lower-energy component being emphasized at lower primary energies. The effects are interpreted in terms of the multiplet structure of the final state coupled to progressive breakdown of optical selection ...

Core electron excitations of clean Ce and of Ce exposed to varying amounts of oxygen and H2O have been studied by electron energy loss spectroscopy (ELS) in reflection geometry. The valence change of Ce atoms during surface oxidation with oxygen is well reflected in ELS of core levels. 4d→4f excitations provide the best spectral fingerprint of the valence state, but 3d→4f and 4p→5d excitations also show spectral modifications which can be correlated to the change in f count. The spectral profiles ...

(1) Background: Advanced MR imaging (MRI) of brain tumors is mainly based on qualitative contrast images. MR Fingerprinting (MRF) offers a novel approach. The purpose of this study was to use MRF-derived T1 and T2 relaxation maps to differentiate diffuse gliomas according to isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation. (2) Methods: Twenty-four patients with histologically verified diffuse gliomas (14 IDH-mutant, four 1p/19q-codeleted, 10 IDH-wildtype) were enrolled. MRF T1 and T2 relaxation times were compared ...

Abstract We are socialists. We are enemies, deadly enemies, of today’s capitalist economic system with its exploitation of the economically weak, its unfair wage system, its immoral way of judging the worth of human beings in terms of their wealth and their money, instead of their responsibility and performance, and we are determined to destroy this system whatever happens![... ] And yet it is not enough just to change the system, to replace one economic system by another; what is needed above all ...

We characterize the performance of a quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP), which is fabricated as a photonic crystal slab (PCS) resonator. The strongest resonance of the PCS is designed to coincide with the absorption peak frequency at 7.6 µm of the QWIP. To accurately characterize the detector performance, it is illuminated by using single mode mid-infrared lasers. The strong resonant absorption enhancement yields a detectivity increase of up to 20 times. This enhancement is a combined effect ...

Optical tweezers are a powerful tool to hold and manipulate particles on the microscale. The ability to measure tiny forces enables detailed investigations, e.g., of the mechanical properties of biological systems. Here we present a generally applicable method to simultaneously measure all components of the force applied to a specific particle in a trapped ensemble, or to a specific site of an extended object. This holographic force measurement relies on a detailed analysis of a single interference ...

The prognostic value of the right ventricular parameters in patients with heart failure (HF) is well documented, but the data on patients undergoing mitral valve repair are lacking. The association between pre-operative right ventricular dilatation and outcome was studied in 70 consecutive patients with HF who underwent elective mitral valve repair. Mean age was 67 years, 71% were men, mean pre-operative NYHA class was 2.8, mean pre-operative ejection fraction was 31%, and 47% had atrial fibrillation. ...

Abstract Background Myocardial infarction (MI) in young patients is rare. To address the gap in published all comers German studies concerning the clinical course and outcome of young patients aged ≤40 years with acute MI, the aim of this study was to identify differences between young and older, consecutive patients with MI and to compare these findings with previously published data. Methods This analysis used data of the prospective Dresden Myocardial Infarction Registry (1/2005–9/2014), an all comers, ...

We present a method to measure the optical torque applied to particles of arbitrary shape such as micrometer-sized micro-organisms or cells held in an optical trap, inferred from the change of angular momentum of light induced by the particle. All torque components can be determined from a single interference pattern recorded by a camera in the back focal plane of a high-NA condenser lens provided that most of the scattered light is collected. We derive explicit expressions mapping the measured ...

Valvular heart disease in patients being treated with ergot-derivative dopamine agonists (Ergot-DA) for Parkinson's disease has been reported to occur as a consequence of serotonine receptor stimulation. Goal of this analysis was to estimate the incidence of those changes from recently published studies and to determine its clinical relevance. Medline searches were performed to identify cross-sectional, echocardiographic studies comparing patients treated with dopamine agonists or controls, in terms ...

Abstract Fibrotic valvular heart disease (VHD) has been reported in association with ergot dopamine agonists (DAs), but the current database is insufficient regarding clinical relevance and comparison to data on non‐ergot DAs. We evaluated the effects of four DAs (pergolide, cabergoline, ropinirole, pramipexole) on morphology and function of heart valves in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) to determine the frequency and clinical relevance of DA‐induced VHD. A total of 85 patients treated with ...

Objective Hypoxia plays a pivotal role in development and progression of restenosis after vascular injury. Under hypoxic conditions the hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are the most important transcription factors for the adaption to reduced oxygen supply. Therefore the aim of the study was to investigate the effect of a local HIF-inhibition and overexpression on atherosclerotic plaque development in a murine vascular injury model. Methods and results After wire-induced vascular injury in ApoE−/− ...

Objective: Acute myocardial ischaemia has been shown to modulate the β-adrenergic system and to activate protein kinase C. The aim of this study was to investigate if two important components of ischaemia, i.e. energy depletion or acidosis, may contribute to these changes. Methods: Isolated rat hearts were perfused either with anoxia (in the absence of oxygen) or with cyanide in the absence of glucose as models of energy depletion with a loss of high energy phosphates. Alternatively, isolated hearts ...
