The interfacial nanostructure of the three most widely-studied Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), choline chloride:urea (ChCl:Urea), choline chloride:ethylene glycol (ChCl:EG), and choline chloride:glycerol (ChCl:Gly) at a Pt(111) electrode has been studied as a function of applied potential and water content up to 50 wt%. Contact mode atomic force microscope (AFM) force-distance curves reveal that for all three DESs, addition of water increases the interfacial nanostructure up to ∼40 wt%, after which it ...

Per WHO, 2000 classification, pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCN) are defined by presence of ovarian stroma, and are primarily located in the pancreatic body/tail of females. The incidence of MCN and associated malignancy in males, since, standardization of MCN diagnostic-criteria is unknown.MCN resections from 2000 to 2014 at eight institutions of the Central-Pancreas-Consortium were included, and divided into early (2000-2007) and late (2008-2014) time-periods. A central goal of industrialized nations is to provide personalized, pre-emptive and predictive medicine, while maintaining healthcare costs at a minimum. To do so, we must confront and gain an understanding of inflammation, a complex, nonlinear process central to many diseases that affect both industrialized and developing nations. Herein, we describe the work aimed at creating a rational, engineering-oriented and evidence-based synthesis of inflammation geared towards rapid clinical application. ...

Necroptosis is a cellular mechanism of necrotic cell death induced by apoptotic stimuli in the form of death domain receptor engagement by their respective ligands under conditions where apoptotic execution is prevented. Although it occurs under regulated conditions, necroptotic cell death is characterized by the same morphological features as unregulated necrotic death. Here we report that necrostatin-1, a previously identified small-molecule inhibitor of necroptosis, is a selective allosteric ...

Many studies identify risk factors for dehiscence, but a paucity of data exist suggesting an optimal treatment strategy. This study examines repair of abdominal wound dehiscence, comparing closure and interposition of mesh. We conducted a retrospective review of 37 individuals who suffered a wound dehiscence after laparotomy. Outcomes of repairs with either primary closure or polyglactin mesh interposition were examined. Twenty-seven individuals underwent repair with primary closure. Twelve of these ...

Derek Abbott, Gregory P. Harmer,
We introduce Parrondo's paradox that involves games of chance. We consider two fair gambling games, A and B, both of which can be made to have a losing expectation by changing a biasing parameter $\epsilon$. When the two games are played in any alternating order, a winning expectation is produced, even though A and B are now losing games when played individually. This strikingly counterintuitive result is a consequence of discretetime Markov chains and we develop a heuristic explanation of the phenomenon ...

With increasing time after ovulation, mammalian eggs become more sensitive to agonists of activation in vitro or may undergo spontaneous activation in vivo. We have tested the hypothesis that postovulatory eggs undergo time-dependent cell cycle and cytoplasmic changes that result in a partially activated state, accounting for their time-dependent susceptibility to activate. In vivo changes in key activation markers in mouse eggs were quantified at 13, 16, and 22 h post-hCG (1, 4, and 10 h postovulation). ...

Abstract— Trauma to primary teeth may result in direct damage to underlying developing permanent teeth because of the close relationship that exists between the apices of the primary teeth and their permanent successors. Injuries to developing teeth have been classified into ten different categories, using a classification that is largely based on developmental alterations to the permanent teeth. However, this classification does not include other types of trauma that may occur to developing teeth, ...

Abstract Thrombospondin (TS), a 450,000 molecular weight glycoprotein, is released from α‐granules of thrombin‐activated platelets and is secreted and incorporated into the extracellular matrix by several cell types in culture. We have examined the effects of cell density and transformation on the production of TS in cell culture. The levels of TS, per cell, in the culture medium of endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and fibroblasts were greater at lower cell densities; in fibroblasts the levels ...

ABSTRACT Muscle function during movement is more than a simple, linear transformation of neural activity into force. The classic work loop technique has pioneered our understanding of muscle, but typically only characterizes function during unperturbed movement cycles, such as those experienced during steady walking, running, swimming and flying. Yet perturbations away from steady movement often place greater demands on muscle structure and function and offer a unique window into muscle's broader ...

Laurie B. Abbott, Gregory T. Bettmann, Tracy M. Sterling,
African rue is an invasive herbaceous perennial that occurs in several states in the western United States. The ability of African rue seedlings to tolerate and recover from progressive drought was examined in greenhouse experiments. Water was withheld for 15 d, and a subset of plants were rewatered after 12 d of water deficit to examine recovery. Conductance rate decreased to 0.1 mol H2O m−2 s−1 and photosynthesis rate decreased to 2 µmol CO2 m−2 s−1 within 6 and 12 d, respectively. Leaf water ...
