The discovery and development of the so-called 'nerve agents' (neurotoxic substances to be used as weapons) took place in the Third Reich, largely thanks to the vast amount of progress being made in pharmacology in Germany at that time, both in academic and industrial terms. Furthermore, successive National Socialist governments set up a collaborative network made up of the academia, the chemical industry and military chiefs that also favoured this line of research. The first neurotoxic substance to ...

Numerous studies have adopted deep learning (DL) in financial market forecasting models owing to its superior performance. The DL models require as many relevant input variables as possible to improve performance because they learn high-level features from these inputs. However, as the number of input variables increases, the number of parameters also increases, leaving the model prone to overfitting. We propose a novel stock-market prediction framework (LSTM–Forest) integrating long short-term memory ...

The influence of thermal treatments and supercritical carbon dioxide extraction procedures on the crystal structure and morphology of sPS aerogels is investigated mainly by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The use of supercritical CO2 extraction treatments allows the obtaining of high porosity aerogels with fibrillar morphology, not only exhibiting the nanoporous δ phase but also the dense γ and β crystalline phases. Moreover, a procedure to obtain high-porosity aerogels ...

A set of aromatic−aliphatic copolyesters were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of hexamethylene terephthalate (HT) cyclic oligomers and ϵ-caprolactone monomer (CL) at 175 °C using Sb2O3 catalyst. A hexamer- and heptamer-enriched cyclic fraction isolated from the product obtained in the cyclo-depolymerization of poly(hexamethylene terephthalate) (PHT) was used. Ring-opening copolymerizations were conducted for HT to CL feed ratios covering the whole range of compositions and for increasing ...

Abstract The molecular weight distribution (MWD) is possibly the most important characteristic of a polymer. Polymers derive many of their physical properties from their MWD. Therefore, since the origins of polymer science, the theory provides a link between the kinetic mechanism and the mathematical expression of the MWD, and there are analytical solutions for ideal cases. However, the MWD formed in real‐life polymerization processes is usually more complex; the solution of the mathematical models ...

Conducting polymers such as polyaniline (PANi) have been widely investigated as ammonia gas sensors due to their intrinsic redox states, good environmental stability, and suitability for low-cost and variable changing in electrical conductivity when exposed to acid and basic gases. In this paper we used both a hybrid PANi derivative, poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA)-vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) film, and new ac electrical measurement strategies to increase the ammonia gas sensor performance. Complex impedance ...

Nanoporous-crystalline (δ and ε form) fibers of syndiotactic polystyrene (s-PS) have been prepared from melt-spun fibers by different guest-induced cocrystallization procedures. Their crystal structure, morphology, and uptake of volatile organic compounds (VOC) have been investigated. The use of chloroform, i.e., of a molecule being a suitable guest for both δ and ε forms but also a strong solvent for s-PS, leads to nanoporous-crystalline fibers with VOC sorption kinetics much faster than for s-PS ...

Poly(ethylene succinate) (PES) with weight-average molecular weight above 60,000 g mol−1 was efficiently obtained by enzymatic ring opening polymerization of cyclic oligo(ethylene succinate)s c(ES)n, which in turn were prepared by lipase-catalysed cyclocondensation in solution of dimethyl succinate and ethylene glycol. The methodology was demonstrated to be also applicable to the synthesis of high molecular weight PES-copolyesters containing butylene succinate, ε-hydroxycaproate or l-lactate units ...

In this paper, the preparation of PBS-ran-PCL copolyesters by enzymatic ring opening polymerization is presented for the first time. The copolyesters were produced in a wide composition range and free of metallic contaminants, so they may be regarded as potential biomaterials. The copolymers have been characterized by proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized ...

Abstract The ring‐opening reactions of epoxides with amines were efficiently and regioselectively catalyzed by high‐surface‐area graphite and graphene oxide under metal‐free and solvent‐free conditions. For epoxides without aryl groups, catalytic activity was observed only for graphene oxide, and hence, the activity must have been due to its acidic groups. For styrene oxide, instead, graphite and graphene oxide exhibited rather similar catalytic activities, and hence, the activity was mainly due ...

A series of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) ionomers containing up to 14 mol% of sulfonated succinate units have been synthesized by polycondensation in the melt-phase. The copolyesters were obtained with weight average molecular weights oscillating between 33,000 and 72,000 g·mol−1. All copolyesters were semicrystalline with melting temperatures and enthalpies decreasing and glass transition temperatures increasing with the content of ionic units. The thermal stability of PBS was slightly reduced ...
