Abstract Probably more than any other European country, contemporary Britain has been deeply marked by mass immigration and diaspora, in particular from India and Pakistan, and British Asian cinema has joined the often rather polemic media debate about the country's “multiculturalism” as an outstanding example of diasporic reflections on the topic. Be it as a potential mirror of popular attitudes, ideas, and preoccupations, or as regards the likely impact on common views and opinions on migration, ...

Food allergens are frequent causes of anaphylaxis. In particular in children and adolescents they are the most frequent elicitors of severe allergic reactions, and in adults food allergens rank third behind insect venom and drugs. Since July 2006 severe allergic reactions from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are collected in the anaphylaxis registry. Currently 78 hospitals and private practises are connected. From July 2006 until February 2009 1,156 severe allergic reactions were registered. Among ...

Neurodegeneration is characterized by the disease-specific loss of neuronal activity, culminating in the irreversible destruction of neurons. Neuronal cell death can proceed via distinct subroutines such as apoptosis and necrosis, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an established model for programmed cell death, characterized by distinct cell death pathways conserved from yeast to mammals. Recently, yeast models for several major classes ...

Alpha interferon induces HBeAg seroconversion in about one third of treated patients and has become an established treatment of chronic hepatitis B. A number of smaller studies have suggested that response to treatment is more likely to occur in patients with higher levels of transaminases, with recent (adult) onset, a history of acute hepatitis, low levels of HBV DNA and in heterosexual males. The aim of this European co-operative study was to estimate the effect of alpha interferon more accurately ...

This study explores the challenges of its superdiverse protagonists – cleaners at London University – who suffer under precarious conditions. The author discusses ...

The novel fast-pulsed injection magnets for the FEL storage ring DELTA at the University of Dortmund are integrated parts of the vacuum tube. They are made by slitting the pipe symmetrically with respect to the beam axis. This keeps the cross section constant and the losses due to wake fields are reduced significantly compared to more conventional designs. Other advantages are a rather homogeneous field distribution in the beam region and a low inductivity.

Background: Dent disease is an X-linked tubulopathy frequently caused by mutations affecting the voltage-gated chloride channel and chloride/proton antiporter ClC-5. A recent study showed that defects in OCRL1, encoding a phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate 5-phosphatase (Ocrl) and usually found mutated in patients with Lowe syndrome, also can provoke a Dent-like phenotype (Dent 2 disease). Methods: We investigated 20 CLCN5-negative males from 17 families with a phenotype resembling Dent disease ...

Interferon alfa (IFN-α) is the primary treatment for chronic hepatitis B. The standard duration of IFN-α therapy is considered 16 weeks; however, the optimal treatment length is still poorly defined. We evaluated the efficacy and acceptability of prolonged IFN-α treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis B. To investigate whether treatment prolongation could enhance the rate of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion, we conducted a prospective, controlled, multicenter trial in which all patients ...

Processes of atelectasis and pulmonary shrinkage are not confined to the right middle lobe. This fact is illustrated by case reports of five of our nine such patients. All cases shared common clinical and morphologic similarities: congenital malformations of the bronchial skeleton, compression, and chronic inflammation produce comparable pulmonary morphology that always includes atelectasis. Atelectasic processes of longer duration require surgical resection; this led to cures in all the authors' ...
