Background Congenital syphilis (CS) is a major and avoidable cause of neonatal death worldwide. In this study, we aimed to estimate excess all-cause mortality in children under 5 years with CS compared to those without CS. Methods and findings In this population-based cohort study, we used linked, routinely collected data from Brazil from January 2011 to December 2017. Cox survival models were adjusted for maternal region of residence, maternal age, education, material status, self-declared race ...

Rare earth elements (REY) are the lanthanide elements (Z = 57–71), which have an ever-growing occurrence in present-day industries, agriculture, and modern life. Consequently, environmental concentrations are expected to increase accordingly as a result of intensified utilization. Soils are an important sink for REY, yet little research has been conducted concerning activity, inputs, and lability in soil systems. This study evaluated the REY (lanthanides + yttrium) sorption and partition coefficients (Kd) ...

Selenium-biofortified wheat can substantially improve human nutrition, by reducing selenium deficiency in humans. In this study, field trials were conducted to investigate the biofortification of selenium (Se) in wheat and also to assess the influence of foliar application of Se (as sodium selenate) on the metabolism of carbohydrates, nitrogen contents, and on the antioxidant system of the plants. Selenium was applied via foliar sprays at the following doses: 0, 12, 21, 38, 68, and 120 g ha−1. The ...

The Fe (oxyhydr)oxide rind, or Fe plaque, that forms on aquatic plant roots is an important sorbent of metal(loid)s and plays a role in the attenuation of metal(loid) uptake into higher plants. However, the mineral composition of Fe plaque and thus its potential to sorb metal(loid)s is affected by solution chemistry. The predominant strategy to characterize Fe plaque using dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) extraction and elemental analysis reveals total Fe quantity but misses the mineral structure ...

This study evaluated a red mud (RM) treated with or without phosphogypsum (G) in order to improve its As retention. Red mud and G samples and their mixtures were chemically and mineralogically characterized to gather information concerning their composition, which is key for a better understanding of the adsorbent properties. Phosphogypsum was added to RM in the following proportions: 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, ...

Proximal sensors have been increasingly used for a variety of purposes worldwide, with great interest on portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry applications in Soil Science. pXRF provides rapid, inexpensive, non-destructive, and environmentally-friendly elemental analysis in soils, rocks, sediments, plant tissues, water, and other matrices. While temperate regions concentrate the largest number of studies involving pXRF for soil characterization, tropical regions have recently demonstrated ...

ABSTRACT Selenium (Se) is an important element that was discovered in 1817, and since the 1960s, it has been regarded as an essential micronutrient for both animals and humans, playing among other functions a relevant role in the antioxidant system of mammals. Inadequate blood Se levels in the human body is a well-known concern in many parts of the world. This malnutrition problem is often due to Se-poor diet, probably as a result of the low Se availability in soils where crops are growing. Nowadays, ...

Zinc contents exceeding regulatory levels have been documented in several areas in Brazil and elsewhere, especially in sites surrounding mining and smelting sites. Studies involving Zn release and speciation are keys to assess the mobility and bioavailability and thus the potential ecological risk of this element. Arsenic (As) in native soils of the Amazon rainforest is a concern due to its likely origin from the Andean rivers, which transport loads of sediments containing substantial amounts of trace elements coming from the cordilleras. Yet, unveiling soil As baseline concentrations in the Amazon basin is still a need because most studies in Brazil have been performed in areas with predominantly high concentrations and cannot express a real baseline value for the region.
