Abstract Clonal expansions driven by somatic mutations become pervasive across human tissues with age, including in the haematopoietic system, where the phenomenon is termed clonal haematopoiesis 1–4 . The understanding of how and when clonal haematopoiesis develops, the factors that govern its behaviour, how it interacts with ageing and how these variables relate to malignant progression remains limited 5,6 . Here we track 697 clonal haematopoiesis clones from 385 individuals 55 years of age or older ...

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a long-term neurodegenerative brain disorder that mainly affects the motor system. The causes are still unknown, and even though currently there is no cure, several therapeutic options are available to manage its symptoms. The development of novel antiparkinsonian agents and an understanding of their proper and optimal use are, indeed, highly demanding. For the last decades, L-3,4-DihydrOxyPhenylAlanine or levodopa (L-DOPA) has been the gold-standard therapy for the symptomatic ...

We present SpotOn, a web server to identify and classify interfacial residues as Hot-Spots (HS) and Null-Spots (NS). SpotON implements a robust algorithm with a demonstrated accuracy of 0.95 and sensitivity of 0.98 on an independent test set. The predictor was developed using an ensemble machine learning approach with up-sampling of the minor class. It was trained on 53 complexes using various features, based on both protein 3D structure and sequence. The SpotOn web interface is freely available at: ...

Membrane proteins (MPs) play diverse and important functions in living organisms. They constitute 20% to 30% of the known bacterial, archaean and eukaryotic organisms' genomes. In humans, their importance is emphasized as they represent 50% of all known drug targets. Nevertheless, experimental determination of their three-dimensional (3D) structure has proven to be both time consuming and rather expensive, which has led to the development of computational algorithms to complement the available experimental ...

The analysis of 2,840 cases of hemorrhoidectomy by open techniques of Milligan-Morgan (2,189 cases), Ferguson (341 cases) and mixed (310 cases) in 11,043 patients with hemorrhoidal disease (HD) allowed the following conclusions. The patients' acceptance of surgical indication for hemorrhoidectomy was 25.7%. Hemorrhoidectomy was more common among women (53.8%) than men (46.2%), and more accepted by women (26.5%) than men (24.8%). Hemorrhoidectomy was more common in patients of the fourth (27.7%), fifth (21. ...

This paper proposes a model for the reoccupation of ants in a region of attraction, using evolutive partial differential diffusion–advection equations, in which the population dispersion and velocity in directions x and y are fuzzy parameters. The domain under study contains an attractive region, representing areas with high concentrations of palatable host plants with better nutritious qualities. The algorithm developed here uses information about the foraging behavior of a leaf-cutting ant colony ...

South American coralsnakes are characterized by inconspicuous and poorly known species, which are potentially very sensitive to climate change. Here, we assess the impact of future climate change on the distributions of the Micrurus lemniscatus species complex after addressing the Wallacean shortfalls and refining the knowledge about their current geographic distributions. We also evaluate the efficiency of the current reserve network to protect the species in the present and future. We applied ...

Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) are among the nanoparticles most used industrially, but their impacts on living organisms are widely unknown. We evaluated the effects of 50–1000 mg L−1 Al2O3 NPs on the growth, metabolism of lignin and its monomeric composition in soybean plants. Al2O3 NPs did not affect the length of roots and stems. However, at the microscopic level, Al2O3 NPs altered the root surface inducing the formation of cracks near to root apexes and damage to the root cap. The ...

G-Protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are involved in a myriad of pathways key for human physiology through the formation of complexes with intracellular partners such as G-proteins and arrestins (Arrs). However, the structural and dynamical determinants of these complexes are still largely unknown. Herein, we developed a computational big-data pipeline that enables the structural characterization of GPCR complexes with no available structure. This pipeline was used to study a well-known group of catecholamine ...

Cancer has become one of the main leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. One of the critical drawbacks of current cancer therapeutics has been the lack of the target-selectivity, as these drugs should have an effect exclusively on cancer cells while not perturbing healthy ones. In addition, their mechanism of action should be sufficiently fast to avoid the invasion of neighbouring healthy tissues by cancer cells. The use of conventional chemotherapeutic agents and other traditional ...

Metagenomic studies about cocoa fermentation have mainly reported on the analysis of short reads for determination of operational taxonomic units. However, it is also important to determine metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), which are genomes deriving from the assembly of metagenomics. For this research, all the cocoa metagenomes from public databases were downloaded, resulting in five data sets: one from Ghana and four from Brazil. In addition, in silico approaches were used to describe putative ...

The consumption of fossil fuels by motor vehicles has increased greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. The automotive industry has invested in environmental technologies to reduce these emissions. This study aimed to determine whether in light-duty vehicles deploying environmental technologies met the energy efficiency ratings of the Brazilian Vehicle Labelling Programme (BVLP) in 2013, 2015, and 2017. In 2013, Brazil implemented the ‘INOVAR-AUTO’ regulation to improve vehicle energy efficiency. ...

Cocoa fermentation is a spontaneous process shaped by a variable microbial ecosystem which is assembled due to cross-feeding relationship among yeasts and bacteria, resulting in a synchronized microbial succession started by yeasts, followed by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and finalized by acetic acid bacteria (AAB). Several studies have indicated the effect of microbial interactions in food ecosystems highlighting the importance of quorum sensing (QS) in bacterial adaptation in harsh environments modulating ...

Even with the automotive technological evolution steadily improving energy efficiency, the transportation sector continues to account for more than one-fifth of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).
