Guinea-pig spermatozoa in the presence of a purified fraction from Echeveria gibbiflora aqueous crude extract suffer a hypotonic-like effect. The phenomena exhibited included a distension of the plasma membrane over the acrosome region, inducing the formation of a huge 'head-bubble'. The agglutination effect was so enhanced that instead of inducing sperm clusters, it produced cane-like 'stalk' structures. The immobilizing activity was induced instantaneously after the addition of the purified fraction. ...

This work deals with finite time observability of switched linear systems ( SLS ) when they are represented by a family of nonautonomous linear systems ( LS ) and an interpreted Petri net ( IPN ). Based on this SLS representation, new detection of the commutation time and LS distinguishability characterizations in SLS extended to the non autonomous case are presented. Using these results, the novel concept of distinguishability between LS sequences is presented and characterized. This concept together with the ...

Tecoma stans aqueous extract (TAE) is widely used as a traditional antidiabetic remedy in Mexico; its rational use is controversial. We provide evidence of its main antidiabetic activities. To evaluate in vivo and in vitro intestinal α-glucosidases inhibition as the possible mode of action of TAE on type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) animal models, and to test the effects of its sub-chronic administration on lipids and glucose blood levels. In healthy and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic male Sprague– ...

A collapse pressure test was conducted on a full-scale diameter prototype composite offshore drilling riser. The test specimen was a carbon fiber-epoxy filament-wound tube, approximately 56.4 cm outside diameter and 3.05 cm wall thickness. The tube was subjected to external water pressure up to collapse. The purpose of the test was to confirm the external pressure capacity of the specimen and to provide a basis for verification and calibration of analytical estimates of the collapse pressure of ...

The aim of this study was to determine healthcare providers' knowledge and practices about dysphagia. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out based on a self-administered and anonymous questionnaire addressed to healthcare providers in Spain. A total of 396 healthcare providers participated in the study. Of these, 62.3% knew the definition of dysphagia as a swallowing disorder. In addition, up to 39.2% of the participants reported that they did not know whether the EatingAssessmentTool ( ...

Despite the positive contributions of several European Union (EU) policies to reduce border barriers, the EU Cross-Border Review (CBR) initiative reaffirmed their relevance and persistence. Since 2018, the EU has supported the b-solutions initiative, specifically focused on tackling legal and administrative border obstacles, aiming to highlight replicable solutions which can contribute to reducing these obstacles. This article critically assesses the b-solutions and its contribution to reducing administrative ...

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is an emerging pathogen affecting tomato-production systems in several countries, including Mexico. This situation involves challenges due to the negative impact on yield and the lack of disease-management measures. This work analyzes the spatiotemporal distribution of ToBRFV in commercial tomato greenhouses. The presence or absence of diseased plants was evaluated weekly, assigning a location in space (x, y). Temporal analysis consisted of fitting the incidence ...

Introduction: Liver chemistry abnormalities are a frequent manifestation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) but are usually transient and resolve with disease resolution. Methods: We describe the clinical course and histologic features of 3 adults who developed prolonged and severe cholestasis during recovery from critical cardiopulmonary COVID-19. Results: These patients had clinical and histologic features similar to secondary sclerosing cholangitis of the critically ill patient, but with unique ...

Areas cultivated with Hass avocado crops in Colombia have growth rapidly. One of the major limitations is the avocado wilt complex disease (AWC) caused by biotic and abiotic factors which have increased under the El Niño southern oscillation ENSO phenomenon (El Niño, La Niña). The objective of this study was to evaluate different strategies for mitigating the adverse effects associated with the ENSO phenomenon and AWC in avocado crops. We evaluated native materials, mulches, and parameters associated ...

Phytophthora cinnamomi is the most important pathogen in avocado crops that causes the disease named avocado root rot (PRR). This disease affects the root system and induces multiple symptoms that end with plant death and causes large economic losses. PRR management is based almost exclusively on the use of fungicides (metalaxyl and phosphites). This situation led to inefficient management practices with apparently satisfactory results only in short periods. The objective of this work was to evaluate ...
