INTRODUCTION: The treatment of mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) is difficult due to the toxicity and route of administration of standard drugs. Miltefosine is an oral agent used for leishmaniasis treatment; however, no data exist regarding its use for ML in Brazil. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of miltefosine for ML treatment compared to that of pentavalent antimonial in a pilot study. METHODS: We performed a randomized clinical trial with two parallel groups. The tested intervention ...

Abstract High-intensity pulsed electric fields (HIPEF) treatment is a nonthermal technology that has been studied in the last few years as an alternative to heat treatments. It consists of applying pulses of high electric field (kV/cm) during a short time (μsec or msec) at low or moderate temperature. Because of their properties, fruit juices are appropriate products to be processed by HIPEF. Studies on the effects of HIPEF on microorganisms show that this treatment destroys microorganisms at levels ...

Certain gangliosides are tumor-associated antigens that constitute potential targets for cancer immunotherapy. A major drawback in the design of ganglioside-based cancer vaccines, however, is the poor immunogenicity of these glycolipids. Here we report the immunological and physicochemical properties of very small size proteoliposomes (VSSP) obtained by using anionic detergents to incorporate gangliosides into the outer membrane protein complex (OMPC) of N. meningitidis. VSSP of three different gangliosides, ...

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of fish is a target of contaminants since it can absorb these substances. We evaluated the morphophysiological alterations in the GIT of Sphoeroides testudineus collected in two estuaries presenting differences in their environmental quality (NIA and IA). The intestine was analyzed for histological and neuronal changes; liver and gills for biochemical markers; muscle tissues for neurotoxicity and peripheral blood for genotoxic damage. The results showed alterations ...

The valorization of the by-product of the agro-industrial processing of jabuticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) was studied by hydrothermal pretreatment. Experiments were carried out in a semi-continuous flow-through process for 45 min, at 15 MPa, a water flow rate of 5 mL min-1, and at different temperatures (60 - 210 °C). The results demonstrate that fructose and glucose were the sugars with the highest concentration in all analyzed treatments. Arabinose and cellobiose were obtained only at higher temperatures ( ...

This paper presents a new parametrized family of joint possibility distributions that can be used to control the Pompeiu–Hausdorff norm of the sum resulting from the extension principle. We are able to generate sums with norms covering the entire interval ranging from the smallest possible value to the largest one. Finally, we apply our approach to numerical methods for solving first-order fuzzy initial value problems.

The European sardine (Sardina pilchardus, Walbaum 1792) is indisputably a commercially important species. Previous studies using uneven sampling or a limited number of makers have presented sometimes conflicting evidence of the genetic structure of S. pilchardus populations. Here, we show that whole genome data from 108 individuals from 16 sampling areas across 5000 km of the species’ distribution range (from the Eastern Mediterranean to the archipelago of Azores) support at least three genetic clusters. ...

Abstract Iron accumulation in the brain has been associated with neurodegenerative disorders, and imaging studies in humans indicate that iron content in brain regions correlates with poor performance in cognitive tasks. In rats, iron overload impairs memory retention in a variety of memory tasks. Although the effects of iron on cognition in rodents are extensively reported, no previous study has been conducted in female rats. The incidence of certain dementias, such as Alzheimer's disease, is higher ...

Understanding the causes and consequences of recombination landscape evolution is a fundamental goal in genetics that requires recombination maps from across the tree of life. Such maps can be obtained from population genomic datasets, but require large sample sizes. Alternative methods are therefore necessary to research organisms where such datasets cannot be generated easily, such as non-model or ancient species. Here we extend the sequentially Markovian coalescent model to jointly infer demography ...

pH is a critical parameter for biological and technological systems directly related with electrical charges. It can give rise to peculiar electrostatic phenomena, which also makes them more challenging. Due to the quantum nature of the process, involving the forming and breaking of chemical bonds, quantum methods should ideally by employed. Abstract Gene expression is a noisy process: in constant environment and genotype, cell to cell variability occurs because of randomness of biochemical reactions... Biochemical reactions within individual cells result from the interactions of molecules, typically in small numbers. Consequently, the inherent stochasticity of binding and diffusion processes generates noise along the cascade that leads to the synthesis of a protein from its encoding gene. As a result, isogenic cell populations display ...

The gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) and its receptor (GRPR) are important components of itch transmission. Upstream, but not downstream, aspects of GRPR signaling have been investigated extensively. We hypothesize that GRPR signals in part through the PI3Kγ/Akt pathway. We used pharmacological, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches to further evaluate GRPR downstream signaling pathways. Our data show that GRP directly activates small-size capsaicin-sensitive DRG neurons, an effect that translates ...

With the increase in popularity of procedural urban modeling for film, TV, and interactive entertainment, an urgent need for editing tools to support procedural content creation has become apparent. In this paper we present an end-to-end system for procedural copy & paste in a rule-based setting to address this need. As we show, no trivial extension exists to perform this action in a way such that the resulting ruleset is ready for production. For procedural copy & paste we need to handle the rulesets ...

The footprints of this selection differ between pathosystems because of distinct life-history traits, demographic histories, or genome architectures. What shapes the distribution of nucleotide diversity along the genome? Attempts to answer this question have sparked debate about the roles of neutral stochastic processes and natural selection in molecular evolution. However, the mechanisms of evolution do not act in isolation, and integrative models that simultaneously consider the influence of multiple factors on diversity are lacking; without them, confounding factors lurk in the estimates. Here we present a new statistical method that jointly ...
