Background The incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly syphilis, is high and continues to rise among some populations, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). Furthermore, a higher incidence of STIs has been reported in HIV-positive than in HIV-negative MSM. Objective To determine the incidence of syphilis in a cohort of men with HIV in Buenos Aires city. Methods Retrospective cohort study. We examined the records and visits made by men with HIV aged >18 years in our institution ...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the dietary supplementation of canthaxanthin and cholecalciferol (25OHD3) to broiler breeders and their progenies on their performance. Eighty 25-wk-old Cobb 500 broiler breeders were distributed according to a completely randomized design in 2 experimental treatments, with 10 replicates of 4 birds each. The treatments consisted of the supplementation or not of a corn-soybean meal diet with canthaxanthin + 25OHD3 to broiler breeders fed from ...

In this study a critical attempt was made to review some of the more recent experimental studies on ventricular activation. A study of the activation of the normal free ventricular wall using the cathode-ray tube confirmed our previous observations. The spread of activation in the subendocardial muscle mass and at least one-half of the thickness of the adjacent free ventricular wall, reaches values of 2,000 or more mm. per sec. In these regions QS complexes are recorded as described by Prinzmetal ...

The diagnostic difficulties in the recognition of myocardial infarction in the presence of bundle branch block and the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome are discussed. However, through a “deductive” approach in the analysis of the electrocardiogram, such difficulties may be eliminated to a great extent. The knowledge of the sequence of cardiac activation in normal and abnormal circumstances as in bundle branch block, “pre-excitation syndrome”, and extrasystolia, is fundamental. To sum up, the “deductive” ...

Ecological data directly from the field are important in understanding the life history strategies of kinosternid species in the tropics. Herein we summarize the basic population ecology and life history of Kinosternon integrum in the municipality of Tonatico (southeastern Estado de México, México). From October 2003 to November 2004, we marked a total of 204 turtles and recaptured 118 of them. Mean population size using the Jolly-Seber model was 197 (95% CI 128–416) individuals, with a sex ratio ...

No-take marine reserves can be powerful management tools, but only if they are well designed and effectively managed. We review how ecological guidelines for improving marine reserve design can be adapted based on an area's unique evolutionary, oceanic, and ecological characteristics in the Gulf of California, Mexico. We provide ecological guidelines to maximize benefits for fisheries management, biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation. These guidelines include: representing 30% ...

Analytical pyrolysis can be used to determine the lignin content (Py-lignin) in eucalypt woods with a precision (0.37%) similar to the wet reference methods. Good correlations were found between the Py-lignin results and Klason (94%) and total lignin contents (95%). Besides apparent species-specific deviations, an average difference of 1.3% compared to the total lignin content was observed, well below the 3.9% difference reported for softwoods (guaiacyl lignin). Since Eucalyptus has more syringyl (S) ...

Aedes aegypti control programs require more sensitive tools in order to survey domestic and peridomestic larval habitats for dengue and other arbovirus prevention areas. As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, field technicians have faced a new occupational hazard during their work activities in dengue surveillance and control. Safer strategies to monitor larval populations, in addition to minimum householder contact, are undoubtedly urgently needed. Drones can be part of the solution in urban ...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are normally produced during cell metabolism, there is strong evidence to suggest that ROS produced in excess impair the cell and may be etiologically related to various neurodegenerative diseases. This study was undertaken to examine the effects of Lepidium meyenii (MACA) methanol leaf extract on neurotoxicity in PC12 cell exposed to 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Fresh samples of "maca" leaves were processed in order to obtain foliar extracts and to evaluate the neurobiological ...

Sirtuin 3 enzyme (SIRT3) is involved in the regulation of mitochondrial energy homeostasis by activating Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator (PGC-1α). Murine models have shown that the protein SIRT3 was modified by exercise and diet, however, the effect of exercise without diet in humans has not been examined. Propose of this paper was to analyze the effect of aerobic training on SIRT3 and PGC-1α in skeletal muscle of overweight adolescents without change in caloric intake. ...

Atractus modestus was described based on a single specimen from western Ecuador, and since its original description there have been no further records for this species. During the examination of Ecuadorian collections, we found additional specimens of this poorly known snake. In this paper, we redescribe the holotype of A. modestus, describe the hemipenis and report new specimens, localities, and data on meristic and morphometric variation in the species. We also compare and diagnose this species ...

The species Rhabdosoma microrhynchum (now Atractus microrhynchus) was originally described based on a single specimen collected by the Orton Expedition at "Guayaquil," in the Guayas province on the Pacific coast of Ecuador. The holotype is currently lost and all specimens previously referred to this species were misidentified on the basis of material from Peruvian Amazonia. While examining museum collections and conducting fieldwork in the Pacific lowlands of Ecuador and Peru, we found specimens assignable ...

Latin American countries have a high diversity of sharks, rays, and chimaeras, yet many species are at high risk of extinction due to numerous threats. The conservation of chondrichthyans is key to achieving healthy and productive aquatic ecosystems, and countries in Latin America are increasingly recognizing the need for aligning conservation strategies across jurisdictions with similar ecological and socioeconomic challenges. A study of conduction disturbances in 200 patients with patent ductus arteriosus was carried out. The atrioventricular (AV) conduction was found generally disturbed as compared with normal cases. A significant delay in AV conduction was demonstrated by the high incidence (10.5 per cent) of first-degree AV block, by the elevated percentage of high values of the P-R index and by a high mean P-R index in the whole series (0.85 versus 0.75 in normal subjects). After surgery a significant improvement in ...

Systemic candidiasis is a frequent opportunistic mycosis that can be life-threatening. Its main etiological agent is Candida albicans; however, the isolation of non-albicans Candida species has been increasing. Some of these species exhibit greater resistance to antifungals, so the rapid and specific identification of yeasts is crucial for a timely diagnosis and optimal treatment of patients. Multiple molecular assays have been developed, based mainly on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), showing high ...
