The widespread use of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing for early prostate cancer detection has increased the proportion of early-stage cancers detected and is at least partially responsible for the recent decrease in prostate cancer mortality rates in the United States.1

BACKGROUND There is limited information on outcomes of prostate carcinoma treatments given to screened patient populations for whom cancer is usually detected at an earlier stage. METHODS The authors conducted a cross-sectional evaluation of quality-of-life outcomes for men with prostate carcinoma detected in screening studies at a university center. Of 2234 men diagnosed with prostate carcinoma between 1989 and 1997, 74% responded to the questionnaire. Primary management included radical prostatectomy ( ...

Increasingly, prostate carcinoma is diagnosed through screening. However, little is known regarding factors that influence a patient's decision concerning the treatment choices presented to him.Subjects were prostate carcinoma patients detected through the Washington University PSA Prostate Cancer Screening Program between September 1989 and June 1998. The sources of data were the prostate specific antigen (PSA) screening database and follow-up questionnaire.Among 1809 study subjects, 79.2% chose ...

The importance of tumor size measurements as predictors of disease recurrence after radical prostatectomy in patients with prostate carcinoma remains somewhat controversial, and many pathologists do not report these measurements routinely. The authors studied the correlation between the visual estimate of the percentage of carcinoma in prostatic tissue from radical prostatectomy specimens and prostate carcinoma recurrence rates in a series of 595 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy.A total ...

Surgical site infection (SSI) is the second most common type of nosocomial infections in the United States. In Uruguay, the incidence after prostatectomies is 2.6%. The aim of our study was to compare the efficacy of two skin antiseptics and to determine possible risk factors for SSI in patients undergoing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).A randomized trial included 70 patients operated on for BPH, of whom 56 (80%) underwent open surgery. Patients were treated by the same surgical team ...

This paper aims to demonstrate the advantages of using DMAIC Six Sigma method to implement a laser projection system for stripes plotting in aircraft painting shop. The main benefits of this solution are to increase the productivity, improve the final quality of the product, reduce the reworks and consumable materials, as well as attend to the requirements of ergonomics, occupational health, and safety. Thus, better results are expected in terms of process efficiency and technological innovation ...

This paper presents a guideline which uses the concepts of DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) methodology for specific application on aircrafts design and manufacturing. The main goal of the guideline is to guide the engineers during the aircraft development phases, such that a better aircraft design is achieved. The guideline provides a better evaluation of manufacturing processes, assembly, maintenance, capability and human factors (ergonomics). It is expected to improve the manufacturing ...

Purpose Little is known about the effects of literacy levels on prostate cancer screening. This study evaluates the association between literacy, compliance with screening, and biopsy findings in a large Brazilian screening study. Materials and Methods We analyzed 17,571 men screened for PCa with digital rectal examination (DRE) and total and free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) from January 2004 to December 2007. Of those, 17,558 men had information regarding literate status. Full urological evaluation ...

Simple diversions are underutilized, mostly for unfit, bedridden, and very self-limited patients requiring palliative surgical management due to life-threatening conditions. Experience with cutaneous ureterostomy (CU) as palliative urinary diversion option for unfit bladder cancer patients is reported. We retrospectively reviewed clinical and operative parameters of 41 patients who underwent CU following RC in three specialized Cancer Centers from July/2005 to July/2010. It was recently shown that supernormal conduction in the diseased His-Purkinje system is more common than previously thought, and is always associated with prolongation of refractoriness. To assess whether supernormal conduction could also occur in the accessory pathway of patients with ventricular pre-excitation, 21 patients with manifestly prolonged refractoriness in the accessory pathway were studied. Under these conditions, programmed atrial stimulation revealed a phase of supernormal conduction ...

Objectives To further evaluate the relationship of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) with prostate size and tumor volume in a contemporary surgical series. Although early studies showed a strong correlation between PSA and tumor volume, it has been suggested that PSA is no longer a valid marker for prostate cancer and only correlates with prostate size. Methods From 2003 to 2009, 1234 men with data on prostate weight and total tumor volume underwent radical prostatectomy by a single surgeon. Prostate ...

Due to the limited specificity of prostate specific antigen for prostate cancer screening, there is an ongoing search for adjunctive biomarkers. Retrospective studies have suggested that an isoform of proenzyme prostate specific antigen called [-2]proenzyme prostate specific antigen may enhance the specificity of prostate specific antigen based screening. Prostate cancer clinical staging has significant limitations in the ability to accurately risk-stratify patients for prompt treatment or expectant management. The University of California San Francisco Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment (UCSF CAPRA) was recently described as a straightforward staging system that uses clinical variables to generate a score ranging from 0 to 10. Our objective was to perform an external validation of the CAPRA score as a predictor of 5-year progression-free survival ( ...

Treatment options for patients with low risk prostate cancer include radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, and active surveillance. Among patients treated with radical prostatectomy, prior studies have demonstrated significantly higher biochemical progression rates with surgical delays of 6 months or greater. Low temperature (T) ac magnetic susceptibility (χac) measurements were performed in powder samples of the Zn1−xFexO (x=0–0.078) prepared by a combustion reaction method. The amplitude of the ac magnetic field was kept constant (1 mT) while its frequency (f) varied in the range 10–104 Hz for 5≤T≤300 K. The diluted samples presented cusps with maxima distributed around Tf=17.5±0.5 K while no such feature was observed for the pure sample (x=0). The cusp was found to become more pronounced with the increasing ...
