Some negative experiences during adolescence can jeopardize psychological adaptation throughout life. Therefore, promoting adolescent resilience is an important goal to prevent symptoms of psychopathology. The Resilience Portfolio Model puts forward a framework to understand how different strengths (classified into three dimensions: regulatory, interpersonal, and meaning-making) can help people adapt and even thrive. Through this lens, the current study examines post-traumatic growth after victimization ...

The long-term effect of forest fires in the regeneration of Pinus canariensis was studied. Forest fires had little long-term effects on seed production, seedling germination and seedling mortality. The characteristics of different forest stands across the island had influence in some of the regeneration parameters studied. Despite the importance of forest regeneration dynamics after wildfires, little is known about its long-term evolution after a fire. We tested the effect of fire on the long-term ...

A thiol-β-cyclodextrin was synthesized by a simple and environmentally friendly three-step method comprising epoxy activation of β-cyclodextrin, thiosulfate-mediated oxirane opening, and further reduction of the S-alkyl thiosulfate to a thiol group. The final step was optimized by using thiopropyl-agarose, a solid phase reducing agent with many advantages over soluble ones. β-Cyclodextrin thiolation was confirmed by titration with a thiol-reactive reagent, NMR studies, and MALDI-TOF/TOF. Thiolated ...

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is increasingly being conceptualized in the literature as a cognitive disturbance representing a transitional phase between normal aging and dementia. The operational definitions of MCI provide an opportunity for neuropsychologists to detect subtle deficit and monitor cognitive status sequentially in order to determine rate and degree of progression. More importantly, clinical and neuropsychological studies are needed that can better characterize which MCI patients ...

If $V$ stands for a subspace of $\mathcal {C}(\mathbb {R})$ such that every nonzero function in $V$ attains its maximum at one (and only one) point, then we prove that $\mathrm {dim}(V) \le 2$. This provides the final answer to a lineability problem posed by Vladimir I. Gurariy in 2003. Moreover, we generalize the previous result in the following terms: If $m \in \mathbb {N}$ and $V_m$ stands for a subspace of $\mathcal {C}(\mathbb {R})$ such that every nonzero function in $V_m$ attains its maximum at $m$ (and only $m$) ...

In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), finerenone, a nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, reduces cardiovascular and kidney failure outcomes. Finerenone also lowers the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR). Whether finerenone-induced change in UACR mediates cardiovascular and kidney failure outcomes is unknown.

Finerenone reduced the risk of kidney and cardiovascular events in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes in the FIDELIO-DKD and FIGARO-DKD phase 3 studies. Effects of finerenone on outcomes in patients taking sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) were evaluated in a prespecified pooled analysis of these studies.Patients with type 2 diabetes and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥30 to ≤5,000 mg/g and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥25 mL/min/1.73 ...

The aim was to evaluate relevant biophysic processes related to the physicochemical features and gene transfection mechanism when sphingolipids are incorporated into a cationic niosome formulation for non-viral gene delivery to central nervous system. For that, two formulations named niosphingosomes and niosomes devoid of sphingolipid extracts, as control, were developed by the oil-in water emulsion technique. Both formulations and the corresponding complexes, obtained upon the addition of the reporter ...

Here we apply evolutionary techniques to the calculation of copolymerization reactivity ratios from an inverse problem perspective. To estimate monomer reactivity ratios, we take into account the main aspects of both inverse problems and evolutionary computation techniques. Copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and α-tocopheryl methacrylate (MVE) were prepared by free radical copolymerization in dioxane solution using 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile as the initiator. The reactivity ratios were calculated ...

Treatment abandonment because of enucleation refusal is a limitation of improving outcomes for children with retinoblastoma in countries with limited resources. Furthermore, many children present with buphthalmos and a high risk of globe rupture during enucleation. To address these unique circumstances, the AHOPCA II protocol introduced neoadjuvant chemotherapy with delayed enucleation.Patients with advanced unilateral intraocular disease (International Retinoblastoma Staging System [IRSS] stage I) ...

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are vascular deformities involving fistula formation of arterial to venous structures without an intervening capillary bed. Such anomalies can prove fatal as the high arterial flow can disrupt the integrity of venous walls, thus leading to dangerous sequelae such as hemorrhage. Diagnosis of these lesions in the central nervous system can often prove challenging as intracranial AVMs represent a heterogeneous vascular pathology with various presentations and symptomatology. ...

A multi-model approach to predict phytoplankton biomass and composition was performed in a eutrophic Uruguayan shallow lake which is the second drinking water source of the country. We combined statistical (spectral analysis and Machine learning techniques) and physically based models to generate, for the first time in this system, a predictive tool of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll-a) and composition (morphology-based functional groups). The results, based on a 11-year time series, revealed two ...

Endoscopic surgical treatment of pituitary tumors, lateral invading tumors, or aneurysms requires surgeons to operate adjacent to the cavernous sinus. During these endoscopic endonasal procedures, the carotid artery is vulnerable to surgical injury at its genu. The objective of this simulation model was to evaluate trainees regarding management of a potentially life-threatening vascular injury. Cadaveric heads were prepared in accordance with the Oregon Health & Science University body donation program. ...
