Feature selection concerns the task of finding the subset of features that are most relevant to some specific problem in the context of machine learning. By selecting proper features, one can reduce the computational complexity of the learned model, and to possibly enhance its effectiveness by reducing the well-known overfitting. During the last years, the problem of feature selection has been modeled as an optimization task, where the idea is to find the subset of features that maximize some fitness ...

Abstract Background The adaptor protein RACK1 (receptor of activated kinase 1) was originally identified as an anchoring protein for protein kinase C. RACK1 is a 36 kDa protein, and is composed of seven WD repeats which mediate its protein-protein interactions. RACK1 is ubiquitously expressed and has been implicated in diverse cellular processes involving: protein translation regulation, neuropathological processes, cellular stress, and tissue development. Results In this study we performed a biophysical ...

Discriminative learning of Restricted Boltzmann Machines has been recently introduced as an alternative to provide a self-contained approach for both unsupervised feature learning and classification purposes. However, one of the main problems faced by researchers interested in such approach concerns with a proper selection of its parameters, which play an important role in its final performance. In this paper, we introduced some meta-heuristic techniques for this purpose, as well as we showed they ...

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive illness that affects hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Although it is quite easy to identify someone affected by PD when the illness shows itself (e.g. tremors, slowness of movement and freezing-of-gait), most works have focused on studying the working mechanism of the disease in its very early stages. In such cases, drugs can be administered in order to increase the quality of life of the patients. Since the beginning, it is well-known ...

Rhizobia are α- and ß-proteobacteria that associate with legumes in symbiosis to fix atmospheric nitrogen. The chemical communication between roots and rhizobia begins in the rhizosphere. Using signature-tagged-Tn5 mutagenesis (STM) we performed a genome-wide screening for Ensifer meliloti genes that participate in colonizing the rhizospheres of alfalfa and other legumes. The analysis of ca. 6,000 mutants indicated that genes relevant for rhizosphere colonization account for nearly 2% of the rhizobial ...

Deep learning techniques have been paramount in the last years, mainly due to their outstanding results in a number of applications. In this paper, we address the issue of fine-tuning parameters of Deep Belief Networks by means of meta-heuristics in which real-valued decision variables are described by quaternions. Such approaches essentially perform optimization in fitness landscapes that are mapped to a different representation based on hypercomplex numbers that may generate smoother surfaces. ...

Many of the astrophysical sources and violent phenomena observed in our Universe are potential emitters of gravitational waves and high-energy cosmic radiation, including photons, hadrons, and presumably also neutrinos. Both gravitational waves (GW) and high-energy neutrinos (HEN) are cosmic messengers that may escape much denser media than photons. They travel unaffected over cosmological distances, carrying information from the inner regions of the astrophysical engines from which they are emitted ( ...

Members of the family Nairoviridae produce enveloped virions with three single-stranded RNA segments comprising 17.1 to 22.8 kb in total. These viruses are maintained in arthropods and transmitted by ticks to mammals or birds. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus is tick-borne and is endemic in most of Asia, Africa, Southern and Eastern Europe whereas Nairobi sheep disease virus, which is also tick-borne, causes lethal haemorrhagic gastroenteritis in small ruminants in Africa and India. Nairoviridae is a family for negative-sense RNA viruses with genomes of about 17.2–21.1 kb. These viruses are maintained in and/or transmitted by arthropods among birds, reptiles and mammals. Norwaviruses and orthonairoviruses can cause febrile illness in humans. Several orthonairoviruses can infect mammals, causing mild, severe and sometimes, fatal diseases. Nairovirids produce enveloped virions containing two or three single-stranded RNA segments with open reading frames that encode a nucleoprotein ( ...

Most applications can be modeled using real-valued algebra. Nevertheless, certain problems may be better addressed using different mathematical tools. In this context, complex numbers can be viewed as an alternative to standard algebra, where imaginary numbers allow a broader collection of tools to deal with different types of problems. In addition, hypercomplex numbers extend naïve complex algebra by means of additional imaginary numbers, such as quaternions and octonions. In this work, we will ...
