To propose automatic segmentation algorithm (AUS) for corneal microlayers on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.Eighty-two corneal OCT scans were obtained from 45 patients with normal and abnormal corneas. Three testing data sets totaling 75 OCT images were randomly selected. Initially, corneal epithelium and endothelium microlayers are estimated using a corneal mask and locally refined to obtain final segmentation. Flat-epithelium and flat-endothelium images are obtained and vertically projected ...

Considering evidence on competency-based curricula and the benefits of volunteering, this study highlights innovative ideas to improve medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated the motivations and perceptions of competencies developed as leadership and management skills in medical students who joined the COVID-19 Volunteering Program in a Brazilian medical school.

Abstract The current pandemic of COVID-19 caused thousands of deaths and healthcare professionals struggle to properly manage infected patients. This review summarizes information about SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding dynamics and intricacies, lung autopsy findings, immune response patterns, evidence-based explanations for the immune response, and COVID-19-associated hypercoagulability.

Health care has changed since the decline in mortality caused by infectious diseases as well as chronic and noncontagious diseases, with a direct impact on the cost of public health and individual health care.We must now transition from traditional reactive medicine based on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment to a system that targets the disease before it occurs and, if it cannot be avoided, treats the disease in a personalized manner.Precision Medicine is that new way of thinking about medicine. ...

Selenium (Se) participates in several enzymatic reactions necessary for regulating the homeostasis of thyroid hormones. We aimed to analyze the association between dietary Se intake and subclinical hypothyroidism. Baseline data from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto—ELSA-Brasil) in Brazil were analyzed, with a final sample size of 14,283 employees of both sexes aged 35–74 years. Dietary data was collected using a previously validated food frequency questionnaire. ...

Purpose: The water drinking test (WDT) is currently used to temporarily elevate intraocular pressure (IOP) and predict peak IOP in glaucoma. This study investigates neurovascular changes associated with WDT in normal subjects. Methods: The effect of WDT (1 L in 5 min) on IOP, mean brachial blood pressure, heart rate, and pattern electroretinogram was assessed within the next hour in 16 healthy subjects (mean age: 33.5±7.9 y). As a control, testing was repeated in the same subjects without WDT 1 week ...

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder, of multifactorial etiology, which affects 6-10% of women of reproductive age. It is considered the leading cause of anovulatory infertility, menstrual disorders and hyperandrogenism in this population. The genetic basis of PCOS is still largely unknown despite significant family clustering; determining its mode of inheritance is particularly difficult given the heterogenic presentation of the disease.130 Brazilian women, aged 14-42 ...

Additional copy number variation (CNV) analysis of TMPS samples was performed by CONTRA. Fifty women with POI (29 primary ...

In recent decades, the number of people who practice sports has grown exponentially, increasing the number of muscular injuries. Trauma injury occurs when the muscle is exposed to a sudden compression force. Melatonin (MLT) has often been cited in the literature as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Most of the findings (61.6%) corresponded to autosomal dominant conditions, followed by autosomal recessive (25.6%) and X‐linked (12.8%) conditions. These ...

For this, ichthyoplankton collections ...
