Accepted approaches to therapy for the different forms of neurocysticercosis are reviewed. Therapy must be individualized according to the level of disease activity and the location of the parasite. Patients with inactive disease should receive only symptomatic treatment. In contrast, patients with parenchymal brain cysts must receive a course of anticysticercal drugs. Both albendazole and praziquantel are useful; however, recent evidence favors the former as the drug of choice for this form of ...

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) anti-HIV activity is well documented. To evaluate its distribution in lymphoid tissues, which are considered sanctuaries of HIV reservoirs and targets of early massive depletion of CD4+ T cells, we assessed HCQ concentrations in adenoid tissue and plasma of HIV-infected subjects. A daily oral dose of 400 or 800 mg of HCQ was administered to eight HIV-infected subjects for 8 days. HCQ concentrations were measured in plasma and adenoid tissue by high-performance liquid chromatography. ...

The benefits of phenolic acids on human health are very often ascribed to their potential to counteract free radicals to provide antioxidant protection. This potential has been attributed to their acidic chemical structure, which possesses hydroxyl groups in different positions. Phenolic acids can interact between themselves and exhibit an additive, antagonistic or synergistic effect. In this paper, we used 1H NMR to analyze the interactions and mechanisms that are present in major phenolic acids ...

Transference of RNAs and ribosomes from Schwann cell-to-axon was demonstrated in normal and regenerating peripheral nerves. Previously, we have shown that RNAs transfer is dependent on F-actin cytoskeleton and Myosin Va. Here, we explored the contribution of microtubules to newly synthesized RNAs transport from Schwann cell nuclei up to nodal microvilli in sciatic nerves. Results using immunohistochemistry and quantitative confocal FRET analysis indicate that Schwann cell-derived RNAs co-localize ...

Background Poly-ADP-ribose (PAR) is a polymer synthesized by poly-ADP-ribose polymerases (PARPs) as a postranslational protein modification and catabolized mainly by poly-ADP-ribose glycohydrolase (PARG). In spite of the existence of cytoplasmic PARPs and PARG, research has been focused on nuclear PARPs and PAR, demonstrating roles in the maintenance of chromatin architecture and the participation in DNA damage responses and transcriptional regulation. We have recently detected non-nuclear PAR structurally ...

A pilot plant study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Light Cycle Oil (LCO) on product quality when it is used together with straight run gas oil (SRGO) as a hydrotreatment feedstock. Experiments were carried out over a commercial catalyst at different reaction temperatures and LHSV at constant reaction pressure and hydrogen-to-oil ratio. The experimental results show that low space-velocities and high reaction temperature are required to reach less than 500 wppm of sulphur content in the product.

Phenolic compounds are known to have antioxidant capacity; however, there is little information about molecular interactions between particular phenolics found in fruits at different developmental stages. Therefore, the total antioxidant capacity of the phenolic compounds of a fruit may not correspond to the sum of individual antioxidant capacity given by antioxidants from that tissue. In this study, individual antioxidant capacity and the interactions of four major phenolic compounds (chlorogenic, ...

Glioblastoma is a deadly brain disease and modest improvement in survival has been made. At initial diagnosis, treatment consists of maximum safe surgical resection, followed by temozolomide and chemoirradiation or adjuvant temozolomide alone. However, these treatments do not improve the prognosis and survival of patients. New treatment strategies are being sought according to the biology of tumors. The epidermal growth factor receptor has been considered as the hallmark in glioma tumors; thereby, ...

Spermatogenesis is a complex differentiation process that involves the successive and simultaneous execution of three different gene expression programs: mitotic proliferation of spermatogonia, meiosis, and spermiogenesis. Testicular cell heterogeneity has hindered its molecular analyses. Moreover, the characterization of short, poorly represented cell stages such as initial meiotic prophase ones (leptotene and zygotene) has remained elusive, despite their crucial importance for understanding the ...
