We studied the effects of high pressure processing (HPP) on physico-chemical characteristics of an oil-based spinach sauce model system. Color, chlorophylls, ascorbic acid, polyphenoloxidase activity and lipid oxidation (measured as % oleic acid, peroxide value, and p-anisidine content) were evaluated. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to elucidate the contribution of pressure and time on the observed changes. Both pressure and time had a significant ...

Machine learning methods used in Structural Health Monitoring applications still have generalization difficulties among structures, even when structures are nominally and topologically similar. The data sets present divergences between their probability distributions that do not allow the model’s generalization for damage detection. This issue is even more complex in situations where one wants to quantify damage levels through data sets collected from different structures. Transfer learning methods ...

Structures joined by lap-joints can present complex nonlinear dynamic behavior as a function of the stress to which the lap-joint is subjected, including contact stiffness variations and softening, along with hysteresis effects related to frictional dissipation at the contact interface. Considering applications where the use of non-parametric models that depend only on input and output data is required, this work proposes and details the GP-NARX model’s use to approximate systems’ dynamics with ...

In this work, we investigate non-Hermitian elastic waveguides with periodically applied proportional feedback efforts, implemented through piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Using onedimensional spectral models for longitudinal motion, it is shown that dispersion diagrams of this family of structures exhibit non-reciprocal imaginary frequency components, manifesting as wave attenuation or amplification along opposite directions for all pass bands. The effects of positive and negative proportional ...

The damage detection problem becomes a more difficult task when the intrinsically nonlinear behavior of the structures and the natural data variation are considered in the analysis because both phenomena can be confused with damage if linear and deterministic approaches are implemented. Therefore, this work aims the experimental application of a stochastic version of the Volterra series combined with a novelty detection approach to detect damage in an initially nonlinear system taking into account ...

The damage detection problem in mechanical systems, using vibration measurements, is commonly called Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Many tools are able to detect damages by changes in the vibration pattern, mainly, when damages induce nonlinear behavior. However, a more difficult problem is to detect structural variation associated with damage, when the mechanical system has nonlinear behavior even in the reference condition. In these cases, more sophisticated methods are required to detect ...

In the present work, two issues that can complicate a damage detection process are considered: the uncertainties and the intrinsically nonlinear behavior. To deal with these issues, a stochastic version of the Volterra series is proposed as a baseline model, and novelty detection is applied to distinguish the condition of the structure between a reference baseline state (presumed “healthy”) and damaged. The studied system exhibits nonlinear behavior even in the reference condition, and it is exposed ...

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) are excellent candidates for the fabrication of energy harvesters, mechanical sensors, and piezotronic and piezophototronic devices. To date, the deposition of patterned ceramic thin films on flexible substrates is a difficult task to perform under vacuum-free conditions. Printing methods to deposit functional thin films offer ...

Abstract Introduction With the aim of overcoming the high toxicity of PnTx2-6 (or δ-CNTX-Pn2a), a toxin from the venom of the armed spider (Phoneutria nigriventer), the 19-aminoacid peptide, PnPP-19 (P nigriventer potentiator peptide), was synthesized based on molecular modeling studies of PnTx2-6. PnPP-19 improved the erectile function of normotensive rats and mice, without eliciting side effects, and no signs of toxicity were observed. In addition, PnPP-19 was able to potentiate the effect of sildenafil. ...

Periodic elastic waveguides, such as rods, beams, and shafts, exhibit frequency bands where wave reflections at impedance discontinuities cause strong wave attenuation by Bragg scattering. In this approach, the Volterra kernels expanded using Kautz functions can be identified using several techniques to optimize the filters’ poles. The first measurements from proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Data were collected in December 2009 using a minimum-bias trigger during collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 900 GeV. The charged-particle multiplicity, its dependence on transverse momentum and pseudorapidity, and the relationship between mean transverse momentum and charged-particle multiplicity are measured for events with at least one charged particle in the kinematic range |eta| ...
