The present paper outlines an action theory of creativity and substantiates this approach by investigating creative expression in five different domains. We propose an action framework for the analysis of creative acts built on the assumption that creativity is a relational, inter-subjective phenomenon. This framework, drawing extensively from the work of Dewey (1934) on art as experience, is used to derive a coding frame for the analysis of interview material. The article reports findings from the ...

Margaret McLay,

Kurtág's microludes are remarkable in at least two respects: firstly, some of them are so brief as to make even Webern seem verbose in comparison, and, secondly, Kurtág has managed to create something relatively rare—a form born of the chromatic scale itself The microludes are sets of 12 tiny preludes, one for each semitone. Each set moves from C to B by analogy to Bach's ‘48’; however, unlike the Bach pieces, the microludes are not essays in a particular tonality, but rather explore certain relationships ...

Stephen Walsh,

Immediately after the composition of the Gulyás cycle, Kurtág seems to have run into a second period of uncertainty as to how to proceed: this time understandably, since the Bornemisza cycle must have completely exhausted the obvious possibilities of what had started as a reductive language of bold, succinct gestures. True, the cycle had developed ways of expressive extension, but they were mostly sui generis , closely involved with the special qualities of Bornemisza's sermons. To have continued ...

In this article we propose a musical instrument that provides young children with a way to play in a virtual sound space by means of a joystick. We present the work of a multidiscipline team working on various aspects of this project. Sound models that are close to perception are used to define the sound spaces. Pedagogical experiments in public schools are done on the basis of cognitive pedagogy. Ethological and psychoacoustic experiments are carried out to improve the ergonomics of the instruments.

Simone Hohmaier,

The article examines Kurtág's compositional process through analysis of sketches located in the archive of the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel. A special place among sketches functioning as analyses, exercises and/or compositions is held by pieces Kurtág himself entitled “Games”. The analysis concentrates on such sketches dealing with the music of Bartók, and seeks to describe the way Kurtág transforms the stimulus of music by other composers through re-composition and play.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Kurtág has been resistant throughout his career not only to the notion of being interviewed, but also to articulating his own views and concerns through the medium of the written word.
