The mechanical properties of extruder compounded blends of ABS and polycarbonate in the form of extruded-sheet and injection-molded bars are reported and compared with commercial products based on these components. The modulus and tensile yield strength exhibit a nearly additive response to blend composition while percent elongation at break shows a minimum vs. composition. Notched Izod impact strength is nearly constant at the level of pure ABS up to 50% polycarbonate and increases rapidly upon ...

A method, based on Raman spectroscopy, for identification of different microorganisms involved in bacterial urinary tract infections has been proposed. Spectra were collected from different bacterial colonies (Gram-negative: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter cloacae, and Gram-positive: Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp.), grown on culture medium (agar), using a Raman spectrometer with a fiber Raman probe (830 nm). Colonies were ...

Immunologic and inflammatory processes are involved in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G) is a negative regulator of the immune response. This study evaluates the 14 bp Del/Ins HLA-G polymorphism in ACS and DM2. Three hundred and seventy individuals from Western Mexico were recruited and categorized into three groups: ACS (86), DM2 without coronary complications (70), and healthy subjects (214). Genotyping of the 14 bp ...

The macrophage migration inhibitory factor ( MIF ) is related to the progression of atherosclerosis, which, in turn, is a key factor in the development of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). MIF has a CATT short tandem repeat (STR) at position −794 that might be involved in its expression rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the −794 C A T T 5 – 8 MIF gene polymorphism and susceptibility to ACS in a western Mexican population. This research included 200 ACS patients classified ...

Background: Polyphenols have received a great deal of attention due to their biological functions. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a polyphenol-rich fruit. In the past decade, studies testing the antimicrobial activity of pomegranates almost exclusively used solvent extracts instead of fresh pomegranate juice (FPJ). The use of FPJ instead of solvent extracts would reduce toxicity issues while increasing patient acceptance. We established a model to test FPJ as a natural antimicrobial agent. Objective: ...

Inflammation has gained a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). TNF-α is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that could be a potential biomarker in ACS due to its multiple functions. The rs1799964 TNFA polymorphism (−1031 T > C) has been associated with a decrease in gene transcription and cytokine levels. To determine the association of rs1799964 TNFA polymorphism and TNF-α soluble levels in ACS. A total of 251 patients diagnosed with ACS and 164 individuals without cardiovascular ...

The two aims of this study were to generate data for a more accurate calibration of finite element models including the L5–S1 segment, and to find mechanical differences between the L4–L5 and L5–S1 segments. Then, the range of motion (ROM) and facet forces for the L4–S1 segment were measured using the stepwise reduction method. This consists of sequentially testing and reducing each segment in nine stages by cutting the ligaments, facet capsules, and removing the nucleus. Five L4–S1 human segments ( ...

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is the technique of choice in the study of mediastinal and hilar lesions; however, it can be affected by the insufficiency of intact biopsy samples, which might decrease its diagnostic yield for certain conditions, thus requiring re-biopsies or additional diagnostic procedures such as mediastinoscopy when the probability of malignancy remains high. ABSTRACT: This paper is a contribution to the characterisation of permeability to gas of unsaturated GCLs, with applications in cover liners of municipal solid waste landfills. Conducting such tests at low gas pressure gradient limits the risk of moisture distribution change in the bentonite, which has been observed under high pressure gradients. However, a consequence of a low pressure gradient is a small gas flow rate that is difficult to measure with good accuracy. Therefore a solution may be ...

AFM analysis presented different morphologies, showing that the coatings with 15 bilayers had an average grain size of 49 nm; while the 30-bilayer coating exhibited grain sizes of 99 nm. Coating thicknesses were 3 μm, approximately. The Vickers Test revealed that coatings with 8, 15, and 30 bilayers bore better impact resistance ...
