Current claims of biodiversity crisis call for immediate conservation actions. These require the identification of priority sites for conservation based on an assessment of biodiversity patterns. Patterns of species richness are crucial in such endeavor. Also rarity, measured by the size of species' geographical ranges, is often used as a single or complementary criterion. For instance, hotspots for conservation have been defined using either one or the other criterion. We apply a novel tool, range– ...

Explaining the causes of geographic gradients in biodiversity remains an elusive task. Traditionally, correlative approaches have been used to relate species richness with contemporary climate, without actually explaining the causal factors. Recent approaches propose simulation models as more appropriate tools for assessing potential causes of macroecological patterns. Here we developed stochastic models to assess the relative contribution of climate and niche conservatism in determining compositional ...

This research focuses on a comparison of 20 external wall systems that are conventionally used in Spanish residential buildings, from a perspective based on the product and construction process stages of the life cycle assessment. The primary objective is to provide data that allow knowing the environmental behavior of walls built with materials and practices conventionally. This type of analysis will enable promoting the creation of regulations that encourage the use of combinations of materials ...

We assess the changes in Mexico's privately owned vehicle fleet and tax losses (fuel duty on gasoline) associated to the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) through a diffusion model. Our projections for 2050 focus on a) electricity use of EVs, b) gasoline use and c) revenue for Mexico's treasury. The model uses population growth and vehicles sales to project two items: a) EV diffusion and b) substitution rates of ICVs with EVs. The equation uses vehicle km travelled and average consumption of fuel ...

Mexico harbors great cultural and ethnic diversity, yet fine-scale patterns of human genome-wide variation from this region remain largely uncharacterized. We studied genomic variation within Mexico from over 1000 individuals representing 20 indigenous and 11 mestizo populations. We found striking genetic stratification among indigenous populations within Mexico at varying degrees of geographic isolation. Some groups were as differentiated as Europeans are from East Asians. Pre-Columbian genetic ...

The construction sector affects the environment through CO₂ emissions generated by the use of massive quantities of materials, energy, and wastes during the construction and demolition processes. Moreover, current technology offers a wide variety of materials, products, and systems that could be used for a similar solution; however, the decision to select one or other element lies with the price and then by regulatory requirements and availability (ignoring the issue of sustainability). In a building, ...

This paper shows the results of the evaluations carried out, through the internationally recognized Building Sustainability Rating Systems (BSRS), on different housing units built under this program. It was necessary to carry out a normalization criteria process (NCP) due to the particular characteristics ...

Currently, few studies have compared the variations in environmental impact throughout the different stages of the life cycle of urban construction elements; and of these, only a minority approach it from the perspective of favoring mobility on a human scale and reducing the space allocated to motorized traffic flow. Aminopeptidase-N (APN1) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) proteins located in the midgut epithelium of Manduca sexta have been implicated as receptors for Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, and Cry1Ac insecticidal proteins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki. In this study, we analyzed the roles of ALP and APN1 in the toxicity of these three Cry1A proteins. Ligand blot analysis using brush border membrane vesicles of M. sexta showed that Cry1Aa and Cry1Ab bind preferentially to ALP during early instars while ...

Using a random, combinatorial scheme of mutagenesis directed against the conserved SDN region of TEM β-lactamase, and selective screening in ampicillin-plates, we obtained the N132D mutant enzyme. The kinetic characterization of this mutant indicated relatively small effects compared to the wild-type. Both pK1 and pK2 for catalysis were decreased about 1 unit relative to the pK′s for the wild type. This effect was predominantly due to changes in Km . In contrast to the wild-type, the pH-rate profiles ...

Social Housing (SH) in Mexico has a potentially important role in reducing both the emission of greenhouse gases and the use of non-renewable resources, two of the main challenges facing not only Mexico but the planet as a whole. This work assesses the environmental impact generated by the embodied stages of a typical SH throughout its life cycle (cradle to grave), by means of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Two types of envelope and interior walls and three types of windows are compared. It was found ...

The diversity of sites and the distribution of species are fundamental pieces in the analysis of biogeographic and macroecological questions. A link between these two variables is the correlation between the species diversity of sites and the mean range size of species occurring there. Alternatively, one could correlate the range sizes of species and the mean species diversity within those ranges. Here we show that both approaches are mirror images of the same patterns, reflecting fundamental mathematical ...

ABSTRACT Aim A great deal of information on distribution and diversity can be extracted from presence–absence matrices (PAMs), the basic analytical tool of many biogeographic studies. This paper presents numerical procedures that allow the analysis of such information by taking advantage of mathematical relationships within PAMs. In particular, we show how range–diversity (RD) plots summarize much of the information contained in the matrices by the simultaneous depiction of data on distribution and ...
