Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN) enables flexible long-range service communications with low power consumption which is suitable for many IoT applications. The densification of LoRaWAN, which is needed to meet a wide range of IoT networking requirements, poses further challenges. For instance, the deployment of gateways and IoT devices are widely deployed in urban areas, which leads to interference caused by concurrent transmissions on the same channel. In this context, it is crucial to understand ...

The impedance-based structural health monitoring method has become a promising and attractive tool for damage identification and is considered a nondestructive evaluation technique. However, conventional impedance-based structural health monitoring studies have mainly focused on structural damage identification but not so much on statistical modeling approaches in order to determine a threshold for the decision making of the damage detection system. In this study, the impedance-based structural ...

This work investigated the performance of supported LaNiO3 perovskite-type oxides for the CO2 reforming of methane. The methane and CO2 conversion increased at the beginning of reaction for LaNiO3 and LaNiO3/Al2O3 catalysts. On the other hand, conversion remained quite constant for LaNiO3/CeSiO2. in situ XPS experiments under reaction conditions revealed that the metallic Ni particles were oxidized by CO2 from the feed for LaNiO3 and LaNiO3/Al2O3 catalysts. Ceria support was preferentially oxidized, ...

Abstract Congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) causes early brain development impairment by affecting neural progenitor cells (NPCs). Here, we analyze NPCs from three pairs of dizygotic twins discordant for CZS. We compare by RNA-Seq the NPCs derived from CZS-affected and CZS-unaffected twins. Prior to Zika virus (ZIKV) infection the NPCs from CZS babies show a significantly different gene expression signature of mTOR and Wnt pathway regulators, key to a neurodevelopmental program. Following ZIKV in vitro ...

The fact that the COVID-19 fatality rate varies by sex and age is poorly understood. Notably, the outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infections mostly depends on the control of cytokine storm and the increasingly recognized pathological role of uncontrolled neutrophil activation. Food security and climate change concerns are pressing livestock production industry to seek sustainable practices to increase productivity while reducing the intensity of enteric methane (CH 4 ) emissions. Abstract During specific times of the year, especially dry seasons, tropical forages typically have poor nutritional value due to high contents of neutral and acid detergent fibres, and low crude protein in their composition, which may reduce productivity of ruminant livestock production and lead to increased enteric methane (CH 4 ) emissions per unit of generated product in forage‐bases systems. In order to increase fibre degradability and the efficiency of energy utilisation from low‐quality forages, ...

Abstract Questions The growth–survival trade‐off is a central concept for the conflicting strategies of acquisitive species that grow quicker and conservative species that grow slower. Understanding which, and how, cross‐species functional traits contribute to the growth–survival trade‐off is a key topic for understanding the functioning of tropical forests. The present study aimed to: (a) determine if leaf traits, wood density and fruit size influence the growth–survival trade‐off at the community ...

This technique is generally applied to solution samples of humic substances, and so far no information exists about its applicability to whole untreated soil samples. 1,4-Naphthoquinone derivatives are known to have relevant activities against several parasites. Among the treatment options for malaria, atovaquone, a 1,4-naphthoquinone derivative, is widely applied in the treatment and prophylaxis of such disease. Based on the structure simplification of atovaquone, we designed and synthesized four novel naphthoquinoidal derivatives. The compounds were obtained by the underexplored epoxide-opening reaction of 1,4-naphthoquinone using aniline derivatives as nucleophiles. ...

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is endemic in Latin America. Its acute phase is associated with high parasitism, myocarditis and profound myocardial gene expression changes. A chronic phase ensues where 30% develop severe heart lesions. Mouse models of T. cruzi infection have been used to study heart damage in Chagas disease. The aim of this study was to provide an interactome between miRNAs and their targetome in Chagas heart disease by integrating gene and microRNA expression ...

We collected 4.9 million tweets of 18,450 users and their contact network from August 2016 to November 2016. We defined six user classes regarding their sentiment towards Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton: whatever, Trump supporter, Hillary supporter, positive, neutral, and negative. Next, we analyzed their political homophily in three scenarios. Firstly, we analyzed the Twitter ...

Infection by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi causes Chagas disease cardiomyopathy (CCC) and can lead to arrhythmia, heart failure and death. Chagas disease affects 8 million people worldwide, and chronic production of the cytokines IFN-γ and TNF-α by T cells together with mitochondrial dysfunction are important players for the poor prognosis of the disease.
