This paper presents a novel algorithm for the gateway placement problem in Backbone Wireless Mesh Networks (BWMNs). Different from existing algorithms, the new algorithm incrementally identifies gateways and assigns mesh routers to identified gateways. The new algorithm can guarantee to find a feasible gateway placement satisfying Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints, including delay constraint, relay load constraint and gateway capacity constraint. Experimental results show that its performance is ...

An implementation of the Open Service Gateway Initiative (OSGi) standard that enhances the standard and integrates many existing home protocols and home networks is presented. This enhancement extends the ideas behind the OSGi specification, allowing its direct application to real-life situations. Special emphasis is placed on realizing an effective and realistic gateway management system. The architecture presented was applied in several pilot projects.

As networking technologies penetrate wide varieties of devices for daily usage, home networks are becoming a reality. The bandwidth and always-on connectivity provided by the rapidly growing broadband technologies, such as cable and digital subscriber line (DSL), render home networking even more attractive. A residential gateway is a device that interconnects various home devices to one another as well as to the Internet. The home networks being deployed today are simple and inexpensive with the ...

Intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) are gaining momentum among researchers. ITS encompasses several technologies, including wireless communications, sensor networks, voice and data communication, real-time driving-assistant systems, etc. These state-of-the-art technologies are expected to pave the way for a plethora of vehicular network applications. However, ITS faces difficult issues when trying to widely deploy such networks and applications. The interconnection of different networks, even ...

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) almost invariably support a centralized network management model. Though the data gathering function is conducted remotely, such data are usually routed via data sinks to central servers for processing, storage, visualization, and interpretation. However, the issue of supporting remote access to WSNs and individual sensor nodes whilst in their physical environment has not been viewed as a priority. It is envisaged that this situation will change as WSNs proliferate ...

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) connected to the Internet require a gateway to operate. The gateway is responsible for providing the configuration parameters to the nodes by means of message exchanges. These messages are also necessary to create and/or update the route to the gateway in the mobile nodes. As MANET nodes move freely, these messages are generated at the beginning of the connections (to obtain the configuration parameters), when the route to the gateway breaks or when the gateway proactively ...

Typical video door phone systems that allow people inside the home to communicate with visitors at the door have notable shortcomings: the resident must be physically in the home and is not informed of any missed visits upon returning home. To overcome these limitations, we propose an architecture supporting user mobility, whereby the resident can monitor visitors at their front door using the communication-capable devices such as PCs, PDAs, and home servers with Internet connections, regardless ...

Today’s vehicles include a complex symbiosis of intelligent electronic systems and integrated mechanical structures. In-vehicle networks provide an efficient method of communication between the various electronic components in an automobile. The communication protocols discussed in this paper are Local Interconnect Network (LIN), Controller Area Network (CAN) and FlexRay. LIN is used in low speed applications, CAN are used in medium speed applications and FlexRay is used in high speed applications. ...

This article presents a gateway approach to the integration of GPRS and wireless LANs (WLANs). The proposed architecture leverages mobile IP as the mobility management protocol over WLANs. The interworking between GPRS and WLANs is achieved by a gateway that resides on the border of GPRS and WLAN systems. The design goal is to minimize the modifications in GPRS and WLANs as both systems are widely available in the market already. By deploying the gateway, users can seamlessly roam among the two systems. ...

We have developed a home network system and implemented a residential service gateway compliant OSGi specification for the home network system. The home network system consists of an outside-of-house system and an inside-of-house system. A residential service gateway bridges the external network, such as the Internet, into the home network. The experimental results obtained from the demo room show the residential service gateway is practical, reliable and user-friendly.

One of the most important aspects affecting the overall performance of hybrid ad hoc networks is the efficient selection of Internet gateways. We have analytically modeled existing proposals (i.e. adaptive, reactive and hybrid gateway discovery) showing that each of them is only suitable for a particular range of network parameters. We propose a new adaptive gateway discovery scheme based on the dynamic adjustment of the scope of the gateway advertisement packets. We show through simulation that ...

Sensor networks are connected to the Internet via these gateways based on various transmission protocols. In particular, the main features of IOT gateways are reliability, high real-time, security and so on. This paper proposes a heterogeneous IOT gateway based on dynamic priority scheduling algorithm. This paper proposes a QoS-based gateway selection mechanism to select an appropriate gateway based on three QoS metrics: traffic load of gateway, path quality from MANET node to the gateway and hop count to the gateway for integrating MANET and the Internet. The Simple Additive Weighting method is used to combine these three QoS metrics to outrank the optimum gateway. Gateway with the smallest weight will be selected as a gateway. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve packet ...
