Already a classic of war reporting and now reissued as a Grove Press paperback, Black Hawk Down is Mark Bowden s brilliant account of the longest sustained firefight involving American troops since the Vietnam War. On October 3, 1993, about a hundred elite U.S. soldiers were dropped by helicopter into the teeming market in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia. Their mission was to abduct two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord and return to base. It was supposed to take an hour. Instead, they found themselves ...

Pain is a highly personal experience that varies substantially among individuals. In search of an anatomical correlate of pain sensitivity, we used voxel-based morphometry to investigate the relationship between grey matter density across the whole brain and interindividual differences in pain sensitivity in 116 healthy volunteers (62 women, 54 men). Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and psychophysical data from 10 previous functional MRI studies were used. Age, sex, unpleasantness ratings, ...

TOC summary Frontoparietal mechanisms as well as early sensory cortices contribute to directed attention to specific features of painful stimuli, such as intensity or location. Attention can profoundly shape the experience of pain. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms that support directed attention to nociceptive information. In the present study, subjects were cued to attend to either the spatial location or the intensity of sequentially presented pairs of painful heat stimuli ...

The cold-adapted Rhodococcus sp. strain AW25M09 was isolated from an Atlantic hagfish caught off the shore of northern Norway as part of an ongoing bioprospecting project that aims to identify novel bacteria with biotechnological potential. Here, we present the 5.8-Mb draft genome sequence, together with details regarding the origin of the strain and its sequence assembly.

African nonalignment developed between 1955, when its Asian counterpart flowered at the Bandung Confer ence, and 1965, when it was shaken by the failure of Afro-Asians to hold their conference at Algiers. Articulated by a number of leaders but never adopted by them all, African nonalignment usually involved efforts to assure independence, resist external "neocolonial" intervention, avoid entanglement in great-power conflict, emphasize economic development, seek "aid without strings," proclaim confidence ...

Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) measures in general exhibit great variance during diverse pain related conditions. Brain areas of cardiovascular control have been localized to a central autonomic network (CAN) that encompasses several cognitive-emotional processing regions. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the relationship between inter-individual differences in natural variation in dispositional anxiety in a healthy, non-treatment seeking population (anxiety proneness), ...
