For the realization of two-dimensional material-based high-performance electronic devices, the formation of a stable, high-quality metal-semiconductor contact is a key factor. Platinum diselenide (PtSe2), a group-10 transition metal dichalcogenide, is a promising candidate owing to its unique property of layer-dependent semiconductor-to-semimetal transition. Here, a scalable and controllable method utilizing an inductively coupled plasma treatment is reported for selectively controlling the thickness ...

Abstract A novel hybrid phototransistor consisting of molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is proposed. By exploiting the interface properties of MoS 2 and Mo 2 C, a highly sensitive and broad‐spectral response photodetector is fabricated. The underlying mechanism of the enhanced performance is the efficient hot carrier injection from Mo 2 C to MoS 2 . The strong coupling of MoS 2 and Mo 2 C at the interface provides the significantly low Schottky barrier height (≈70 meV), which ...

This study investigated the mechanical properties of steel in flanges, with the goal of obtaining high strength and high toughness. Quenching was applied alone or in combination with tempering at one of nine combinations of three temperatures TTEM and durations tTEM. Cooling rates at various flange locations during quenching were first estimated using finite element method simulation, and the three locations were selected for mechanical testing in terms of cooling rate. Microstructures of specimens ...

Three-dimensional (3D) carbon nitrides (C3N4) show excellent photocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under visible light irradiation. 3D C3N4 can be produced by the high-temperature polycondensation of small organic compounds, often generating impurities of carbon-based residues for a variety of experimental reasons. The presence of these impurities has resulted in a misunderstanding of the intrinsic properties of C3N4 materials. Therefore, most studies take this impurity ...

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) layers of transition metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides, collectively referred to as MXenes, are considered as the new family of 2D materials for the development of functional building blocks for optoelectronic and photonic device applications. Their advantages are based on their unique and tunable electronic and optical properties, which depend on the modulation of transition metal elements or surface functional groups. In this paper, we have presented a comprehensive ...

Abstract Photonic synapses combine sensing and processing in a single device, so they are promising candidates to emulate visual perception of a biological retina. However, photonic synapses with wavelength selectivity, which is a key property for visual perception, have not been developed so far. Herein, organic photonic synapses that selectively detect UV rays and process various optical stimuli are presented. The photonic synapses use carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) as an UV‐responsive floating‐gate layer ...

Three-dimensional (3D) carbon nitride (C3N4) can be used as a promising platform for visible-light-active photocatalysts because of its suitable band positions. This study reports that HNO3 activation improves the photocatalytic activity of 3D melamine-derived C3N4 (MCN) materials, which degrade the organic pollutant rhodamine B (RhB). HNO3 treatment under reflux removes the carbonaceous impurities in MCN and introduces oxygen-containing functional groups on its surface. Under visible light irradiation, ...

Recently, for overcoming the fundamental limits of conventional silicon technology, multivalued logic (MVL) circuits based on two-dimensional (2D) materials have received significant attention for reducing the power consumption and the complexity of integrated circuits. Compared with the conventional silicon complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology, new functional heterostructures comprising 2D materials can be readily implemented, owing to their unique inherent electrical properties. Furthermore, ...

The Fermi-Dirac distribution of carriers and the drift-diffusion mode of transport represent two fundamental barriers towards the reduction of the subthreshold slope (SS) and the optimization of the energy consumption of field-effect transistors. In this study, we report the realization of steep-slope impact ionization field-effect transistors (I2FETs) based on a gate-controlled homogeneous WSe2 lateral junction. The devices showed average SS down to 2.73 mV/dec over three decades of source-drain ...

This study investigated microstructure and mechanical properties of high manganese steel sheet fabricated by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The weld zone showed longitudinal coarse grains due to the coalescence of columnar dendrites grown into the direction of heat source, and the HAZ showed equiaxed coarser grains than the base metal due to the thermal effect of GTAW process. Mn segregation occurred in the inter-dendritic regions of the weld zone and Mn depletion thus occurred in the weld matrix. ...

Carrier multiplication via impact ionization in two-dimensional (2D) layered materials is a very promising process for manufacturing high-performance devices because the multiplication has been reported to overcome thermodynamic conversion limits. Given that 2D layered materials exhibit highly anisotropic transport properties, understanding the directionally-dependent multiplication process is necessary for device applications. In this study, the anisotropy of carrier multiplication in the 2D layered ...

Abstract Controlling the orientation of highly periodic supramolecular structures of small feature size (<5 nm) is the first step for potential applications in optoelectronics, membranes, and template synthesis. A new method, namely, laser photothermal writing, is introduced to direct the orientation of supramolecular columns over a large area. Supramolecular columns consisting of taper‐shaped molecules with long aliphatic tail groups are aligned by a thermal gradient, which is induced by exposing ...

Abstract Herein, a high‐quality gate stack (native HfO 2 formed on 2D HfSe 2 ) fabricated via plasma oxidation is reported, realizing an atomically sharp interface with a suppressed interface trap density ( D it ≈ 5 × 10 10 cm −2 eV −1 ). The chemically converted HfO 2 exhibits dielectric constant, κ ≈ 23, resulting in low gate leakage current (≈10 −3 A cm −2 ) at equivalent oxide thickness ≈0.5 nm. Density functional calculations indicate that the atomistic mechanism for achieving a high‐quality interface is the possibility ...
