Abstract The adenylate cyclase system of FRSK cells, a cultured cell line of fetal rat epidermal keratinocytes, and SV40‐transformed human keratinocytes was investigated. Stimulators of the human epidermal adenylate cyclase, epinephrine, adenosine, and prostaglandin E 2 increased cyclic AMP levels of these cells. There were marked differences in the stimulatory effects; while epinephrine revealed a much stronger effect than the other stimulators in FRSK cells, epinephrine and prostaglandin E 2 revealed ...

Nasal natural killer (NK)-cell lymphoma was resistant to various antitumor agents. Although high expression of p-glycoprotein has been reported, other molecular mechanism of the chemo-resistance is largely unknown. Activation of STAT3 and expression of major apoptosis-related proteins Bcl-2, Bcl-x, and Mcl-1 were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Effects of STAT3 inhibitor AG490 on NK-YS cell line were analyzed by Western blotting and flow cytometric apoptosis assay. STAT3 was activated in six of ...

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based sensors have been used to detect the binding between interactive molecules. We applied the SPR technology to the analysis of interactions between living cells and molecules reactive to the cells, using mast cells and mast cell-reactive antigens. The exposure of dinitrophenol-human serum albumin (DNP-HSA), an antigen that stimulates mast cells, to IgE-sensitized mast cells induced a robust and long-lasting SPR signal in a dose-dependent manner. The maximal increase ...

The X-ray absorption spectra of the heavy fermion compounds SmFe 4 P 12 and SmOs 4 Sb 12 have been measured near the Sm L 3 -edge at selected temperatures below 300 K. The spectra show the valence of Sm ions in SmFe 4 P 12 to be trivalent between 14 and 300 K with no significant temperature dependence. In contrast, that in SmOs 4 Sb 12 is 2.83 at 300 K and shows a significant decrease below 150 K, indicating an important role of the nonmagnetic Sm 2+ ions in the heavy fermion state that are insensitive ...

OBJECTIVES The study evaluates the effect of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) compared with nitroglycerin (GTN) on left ventricular (LV) remodeling after first anterior acute myocardial infarction (AMI). BACKGROUND Compared with GTN, ANP suppresses the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and endothelin-1 (ET-1), which stimulate LV remodeling. METHODS Sixty patients with a first anterior AMI were randomly divided into the ANP (n = 30) or GTN (n = 30) groups after direct percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. ...

Excited state dynamics is a central issue in discussing the origin of the high efficiency of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules. Here we will present experimentally a complexity of the excited state dynamics of the extremely high efficient TADF molecules, 4CzIPN. By means of pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy, we will show the sign of intramolecular charge delocalization formed in the excited state. This specific excited state originates from the intramolecular charge ...

Summary Basophils, the least common granulocytes, represent only ~0.5% of peripheral blood leukocytes. Because of the small number and some similarity with mast cells, the functional significance of basophils remained questionable for a long time. Recent studies using newly‐developed analytical tools have revealed crucial and non‐redundant roles for basophils in various immune responses, particularly Th2 immunity including allergy and protective immunity against parasitic infections. In this review, ...

We have measured XAS spectra at Sm L3-edge in four Sm-based filled skutterudite compounds. The only XAS spectrum of SmOs4Sb12 around the Sm L3-edge exhibit a double peak structure that is the characteristic feature of the mixed valence system due to Sm2+ and Sm3+ states whereas those of others exhibit a single peak structure characteristic in Sm3+ systems. The average valence of Sm ions in SmOs4Sb12 was 2.83. We conclude that the presence of a non-magnetic Sm2+ state correlates with the unusual ...

We previously reported that intranasal challenge with ovalbumin (OVA) plus IL-18 induces airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and eosinophilic airway inflammation in mice with OVA-specific Th1 cells. These two conditions can be prevented by neutralizing anti-IFN-γ and anti-IL-13 antibodies, respectively. The mice develop AHR and eosinophilic airway inflammation after challenge with OVA plus LPS instead of IL-18 and endogenous IL-18 is known to be involved. In contrast, IL-18 does not facilitate these ...

Fuel oil storage tanks are used in the industrial regions of the world to provide a stable energy supply. In cold regions, the oil must be kept warm. In designing the heating system of an oil storage tank, it is necessary to estimate the heat loss from the shell and roof of the tank. To characterize these heat-loss properties, experimental studies were carried out on the fluid flow and local heat transfer around a cylindrical protuberance with a height/diameter ratio of 0.35 mounted on a flat plate ...

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is emerging worldwide because life-styles have changed to include much over-eating and less physical activity. The clinical and pathophysiological features of NASH are very different from those of HBV- and HCV-chronic liver diseases. The prognosis of NASH is worse among those with nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD), and some NASH patients show HCC with or without cirrhosis. In the present review we discuss fibrogenesis and the relationship between fibrosis ...

Tape stripping is a dynamic in vivo model for the induction of synchronized keratinocyte proliferation. We investigated the cell kinetics of pig epidermis by DNA-flow cytometric analysis, which was compared with [3H]thymidine incorporation mitotic counts and 2-[3H]-deoxy-D-glucose uptake. The stripping was standardized and confirmed histologically by the observation of complete removal of horny layer. Following the stripping, the proportion of cells in S-phase showed no remarkable change until 12 ...

Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements were carried out at the K -edge of rare-earth ions in REFe 4 P 12 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) at various temperatures. Distance between a rare-earth atom and neighboring atoms in each REFe 4 P 12 compound was determined in this work. The obtained results agree reasonably with previous results of diffraction experiments. The temperature dependence of EXAFS amplitude was successfully analyzed using the Einstein model in each compound. The ...

The relationship between the local heat transfer and the fluid flow around the square prism was investigated. Three flow patterns were observed. To determine the transcardiac gradient of plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), we measured plasma levels of ET-1 in both the aortic root and the coronary sinus in 14 normal subjects and 79 consecutive patients with CHF. In normal subjects, plasma ET-1 was significantly higher in the coronary sinus than in the aortic root; these findings were also shown in patients with mild CHF, suggesting that there was ET-1 spillover across the heart. In contrast, plasma ET- ...

Basophils have often been erroneously considered to be minor relatives or blood-circulating precursors of tissue-resident mast cells because of some phenotypic similarity between them, including basophilic secretory granules in the cytoplasm. However, recent studies revealed that the repertoire of serine proteases stored in secretory granules is distinct in them. Particularly, mouse mast cell protease 8 (mMCP-8) is specifically expressed by basophils but not mast cells despite its name. Therefore, ...
