Pseudochattonella verruculosa is a heterokont flagellate and has frequently been found associated with multi-species harmful algal blooms in Wellington Harbour. In this study the partial sequences of the nuclear encoded LSU rDNA and the large subunit of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL) of Pseudochattonella isolated from Wellington Harbour indicate that it is similar to P. verruculosa, while sequences of mitochondrial encoded COI, are similar to those of Pseudochattonella farcimen. That scientific knowledge grows by building on previous understanding is familiarly expressed in English by Isaac Newton's phrasing of a much older idea, "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." However, in science, we often do not always clamber as high as we could because we fail to consider previous work. Multiple factors beyond quality and relevance affect the likelihood of a scientific article being cited, including the author's status, country, and affiliation ( ...

The DL is shown to be no more than 5 mm thick (20 D lengths) and positioned just downstream of the maximum in the magnetic field gradient. Furthermore, its position ...

Generalizing a method of Sutherland and the author for elliptic cur ves we design a subexponential algorithm for computing the endomorphism rings of ordinary abelian varieties of dimension two over finite fields. Although its correctness and complexity analysis rest on several assumptions, we report on practical computations showing that it performs very well and can easily handle previously intractable cases. Note. Some results of this paper previously appeared in the author's thesis, [Endomorphism ...

The magnetic properties of SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 , a model spin system on the two-dimensional (2D) Shastry–Sutherland lattice, are reviewed with particular emphasis on the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 has a dimer singlet ground state at zero magnetic field and shows a sequence of magnetization plateaux at high magnetic fields. The plateaux are attributed to the localization of triplets into a superlattice due to mutual repulsion. Such a superstructure has been indeed observed ...

Conservation practitioners, policy-makers and researchers work within shared spaces with many shared goals. Improving the flow of information between conservation researchers, practitioners and policy-makers could lead to dramatic gains in the effectiveness of conservation practice. Twenty-one 14C accelerator mass spectrometric analyses were obtained for three Holocene stalagmites from the Uamh-an-Tartair cave (Sutherland, Scotland) in order to estimate the past dead carbon proportion (dcp). Results show that the dcp increases from 22 to 38% from 3780 years ago to the present. Because δ13C variation is small within each sample, it is concluded that this dcp increase is the product of the ageing of soil organic matter related to peat bog development above the cave that produced ...

We investigate classical Heisenberg spins on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice and under an external magnetic field. A detailed study is carried out both analytically and numerically by means of classical Monte Carlo simulations. Magnetization pseudoplateaus are observed around 1/3 of the saturation magnetization for a range of values of the magnetic couplings. We show that the existence of the pseudoplateaus is due to an entropic selection of a particular collinear state. A phase diagram that shows ...

We present a theoretical study of the frustrated Kondo lattice model on a Shastry-Sutherland-type lattice. Using a mean-field decoupling on both the Kondo and intersite exchange interactions, we study three different phases, an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase without Kondo effect, a Kondo (K) phase without magnetic order, and finally a valence bond solid (VBS) phase without magnetic order and Kondo effect. A phase diagram is obtained giving the stability region of the three phases, as a function of the ...
