Stacking fault energy (SFE) is related to activating complex high strength and ductility mechanisms such as transformation-induced plasticity and twinning-induced plasticity effects. This type of energy can be estimated by many different methods and its importance is in its ability to predict microstructure and phase transformation behavior when the material is submitted to stress/strain. In order to study the SFE, chemical composition, and microstructure relationships, eleven different welding parameters ...

The high lignin to cellulose ratio of coir fibers results in low compatibility between these fibers and natural polymers like starch, leading to poor mechanical properties in the composites. Plasma treatment using either air or oxygen proved to be an effective in removing the lignin rich amorphous layer on coir fibers, as it was clearly observed by SEM. The ratio of the FTIR signal related to lignin (1508cm-1) and cellulose (1317cm-1) decreases 10 times for air plasma treated fibers and 20 times for ...

In this work, a custom‐made reactor was developed to treat batches of short wood fibers with plasma. Three different plasma gases were tested: air, methane (CH 4 ) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ). The latter showed very promising results and was therefore used to prepare additional samples to determine the effects of plasma treatment and conditions on the wood fiber surface properties as well as the adhesion in a polypropylene matrix. As a result, composites made out of fibers plasma treated for 40 min ...

Severe obesity in children and adolescents is now a serious global health concern. Accurate measurements of resting energy expenditure (REE) is a key foundation for successful obesity treatment. Clinical dietitians rely heavily on measured or calculated REE to tailor dietary interventions. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is the gold standard for measuring REE. However, predictive resting energy expenditure (PREE) equations are commonly used when IC is unavailable due to cost or practicality. PREE equations ...
