This paper presents a review of the data sets and methodologies used to construct deterministic models for the spatial distribution of deformation zones and intervening fracture domains in 3-D space at Forsmark, Fennoscandian Shield, Sweden. These models formed part of the investigations to characterize this site, recently proposed as a repository for the storage of spent nuclear fuel in Sweden. The pronounced spatial variability in the distribution of bedrock structures, formed under ductile (lower ...

Key points Weaning from mechanical ventilation (MV) of long‐term intensive care unit (ICU) patients is delayed by impaired respiratory muscle function; however, the mechanisms that cause the impairment are not fully understood. A novel experimental rat ICU model was used for time‐resolved analyses (6 h to 2 weeks) of the effects of MV on diaphragm muscle fibre structure and function, and on gene and protein expression. A prompt and progressive decline of diaphragm muscle fibre function, preceding atrophy, ...

Introduction. Palliative cancer care in acute hospitals is scarcely studied. We therefore described and compared symptoms, care needs and types of cancer sites in 2002 compared to 2007 and analysed the relationships between these factors. Methods. The study was population-based with a cross-sectional design and was carried out in medical, surgical and oncology wards in two acute care hospitals with no advanced palliative home care service. In 2002, 82 one-day-inventories were done (1 352 patients) ...

One in four Swedish women suffers a hip fracture yielding high morbidity and mortality. We wanted to revalidate a 4-item clinical risk score and evaluate a portable heel bone mineral density (BMD) technique regarding hip and fragility fracture risk among elderly women. In a population-based prospective cohort study we used clinical risk factors from a baseline questionnaire and heel BMD to predict a two-year hip and fragility fracture outcome for women, in a fracture preventive program. Calcaneal ...

Previous results concerning instability of the dc link in inverter drives fed from a dc grid or via a rectifier are extended. It is shown that rectifier-inverter drives equipped with small (film) dc-link capacitors may need active stabilization. The impact of limited bandwidth and switching frequency in the inverter-motor current control loop is considered, and recommendations for selection of the dc-link capacitor, the switching frequency, and the dc-link stabilization control law in relation to ...

This paper reports on a parallel collection of rubrics from the medical terminology systems ICD-10, ICF, MeSH, NCSP and KSH97-P and its use for semi-automatic creation of an English-Swedish dictionary of medical terminology. The methods presented are relevant for many other West European language pairs than English-Swedish. The medical terminology systems were collected in electronic format in both English and Swedish and the rubrics were extracted in parallel language pairs. Initially, interactive ...

If computer-stored information is to be useful for purposes other than patient care, reliability of the data is of utmost importance. In primary healthcare settings, however, it has been found to be poor. This paper presents a study on the influence of coding tools on reliability and user acceptance. Six general practitioners coded 152 medical problems each by means of three versions of ICD-10, one with a compositional structure. At code level the reliability was poor and was almost identical when ...

The role of alcohol abuse in mortality was studied in an unselected population of over 10 000 46-48-year-old men in Malmö, Sweden. During follow-up of 0-6 years (mean 3 years) 199 men died. In 61 men (30·7%) death was alcohol related. A theoretical calculation of excess deaths in men with an alcohol-positive history yielded 78 deaths (39·2%). In the official cause of death statistics 10 of the deaths had been assigned alcoholic aetiology (5·0%). These estimates indicate that alcohol was the commonest ...

Background The underlying mechanism for the increased alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference resulting from almost all forms of general anesthesia is unknown. We hypothesized that inhalation anesthesia influences the intrapulmonary distribution of ventilation (V) and perfusion (Q), leading to less advantageous V/Q matching. Methods Ten healthy volunteers were studied in supine position on two separate occasions, once awake and once during mild anesthesia (sevoflurane inhalation) with maintained ...

Automatic word alignment of parallel texts with the same content in different languages is among other things used to generate dictionaries for new translations. The quality of the generated word alignment depends on the quality of the input resources. In this paper we report on automatic word alignment of the English and Swedish versions of the medical terminology systems ICD-10, ICF, NCSP, KSH97-P and parts of MeSH and how the terminology systems and type of resources influence the quality. We ...

For boreal forests in colder climates, changes in environmental conditions are hypothesised to substantially affect ecosystem processes. In this study, trends of top height growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) were analysed using permanent sample plot data from more than 300 long-term experimental sites distributed from temperate zones to the boreal forest conditions in Sweden. By regression analyses, the effects of temperature-sum and precipitation- ...

Recent developments in remote sensing (RS) technology have made several sources of auxiliary data available to support forest inventories. Thus, a pertinent question is how different sources of RS data should be combined with field data to make inventories cost-efficient. Hierarchical model-based estimation has been proposed as a promising way of combining: (i) wall-to-wall optical data that are only weakly correlated with forest structure; (ii) a discontinuous sample of active RS data that are more ...

A new sampling strategy for forest inventories is presented. The most important difference from the traditional sampling strategies is that auxiliary variables from remote sensing are incorporated into the sampling design. The sample is selected to match population distributions of the auxiliary variables as well as possible. This is achieved by a double sampling approach, where auxiliary variables are extracted for a large first-phase sample. The second selection is done by the local pivotal method ...

National Forest Inventories (NFIs) provide estimates of forest parameters for national and regional scales. Many key variables of interest, such as biomass and timber volume, cannot be measured directly in the field. Instead, models are used to predict those variables from measurements of other field variables. Therefore, the uncertainty or variability of NFI estimates results not only from selecting a sample of the population but also from uncertainties in the models used to predict the variables ...

We focus on recent progress in reforming the role of forests and other land use in the EU climate policy framework. EU inclusion of LULUCF (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry) in the climate policy framework still lags international developments, remaining at odds even with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's (UNFCCC) Kyoto framework. Though the EU has made some important changes that eclipse even the UNFCCC framework—in particular regarding the inclusion of cropland and ...

The Good Practice Guidance (GPG) for reporting emissions and removals of greenhouse gases from the land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF) sector of the United Nation's Framework Convention on Climate Change states that uncertainty estimates should always accompany the estimates of net emissions. Two basic procedures are suggested: simple error propagation and Monte-Carlo simulation. In this article, we argue that these methods are not very well-suited for uncertainty assessments in connection ...

Abstract The absence of boreal forests from global policy agendas on sustainable development and climate change mitigation represents a massive missed opportunity for environmental protection. The boreal zone contains some of the world's largest pools of terrestrial carbon that, if not safeguarded from a conversion to a net source of greenhouse gases, could seriously exacerbate global climate change. At the same time, boreal countries have a strong tradition of forest management—expertise that could ...

Abstract To‐date, forest resource‐based carbon accounting in land use, land use change and forestry ( LULUCF ) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ( UNFCCC ), Kyoto Protocol ( KP ), European Union ( EU ) and national level emission reduction schemes considers only a fraction of its potential and fails to adequately mobilize the LULUCF sector for the successful stabilization of atmospheric greenhouse gas ( GHG ) concentrations. Signatory countries to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its supplementary Kyoto Protocol (KP) are obliged to report greenhouse gas emissions and removals. Changes in the carbon stock of living biomass should be reported using either the default or stock change methods of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) under the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry sector. Traditionally, volume estimates are used as a forestry measures. Changes in living ...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of nutrients in stumps and coarse roots in Norway spruce, Scots pine and silver birch in Sweden, Finland and Denmark, and to assess how nutrient concentrations vary with site characteristics, stand age and root size. Concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) in spruce, pine and birch stumps were assessed in eight sites across Scandinavia. Nutrient concentrations were higher ...

Most European countries have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change and its Kyoto Protocol. Because the European Union is a party to the convention just like the individual countries, there is a need for harmonizing emissions reporting. This specifically applies to the Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry sector, for which harmonized reporting is complex and generally challenging. For example, parties use a variety of different methods for estimating emissions and removals, ...
