The tetrahedral [Cu(phenAr2)(py)2]+ coordination motif (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; py = pyridine) conceived on the basis of the HETPYP concept (heteroleptic pyridyl and phenanthroline metal complexes) is a versatile dynamic unit for constructing various heteroleptic metallosupramolecular pseudo-1D, 2D, and 3D structures, both in solution and the solid state. The 2,9-diaryl substituted phenanthroline (phenAr2) serves as a capping ligand for copper(I) ions, as its bulky nature prevents formation of the homoleptic ...

Transcatheter techniques of aortic valve replacement are a treatment option for valvular heart disease in high-risk surgical candidates. We evaluated a self-expanding valve system with a novel mechanism of fixation in an experimental setting in an acute animal model and ex vivo in aortic root specimens.A self-expanding nitinol stent containing a pericardial tissue valve was implanted in a transapical approach in 15 sheeps. The valve was introduced under fluoroscopic guidance through a 22F sheath ...

Abstract Since 1979/80, glaciological studies have been carried out at Ekströmisen, Antarctica, including accumulation-stake measurements, snow-pit and shallow-firn-core studies. Snow stratigraphy, chemical properties and stable-isotope ratios (δ 18 O) were investigated. This study focuses on three cores taken between 1982 and 1998. the 1998 core was dated using dielectric profiling, δ 18 O profiles and stake measurements. Accumulation rates show high interannual and spatial variability due to the ...

Abstract At the German wintering base Neumayer, an intensive glacio-meteorological programme has been carried out during the last two decades. A complete meteorological dataset and data from surface snow samples, snow pits, firn cores and weekly accumulation measurements from a stake array are available. We first investigated the attenuation of the seasonal δ 18 O signal due to water-vapour diffusion in the snowpack. A comparison of surface snow samples and firn cores of different ages shows that ...

Abstract The seasonal deuterium excess signal of fresh snow samples from Neumayer station, coastal Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, was studied to investigate the relationship between deuterium excess and precipitation origin. An isotope model was combined with a trajectory model to determine the relative influence of different moisture sources on the mean annual course of the deuterium excess, focusing on the phase lag between δ 18 O and excess d. Whereas the annual course of δ 18 O always shows ...

BACKGROUND Recent studies have demonstrated that various tumors express enhanced levels of the radical scavenger glutathione (GSH). Moreover, there are grounds for claiming that GSH plays a crucial role in cell proliferation and tumor resistance. In the current study, we investigated the relation between cell growth and GSH levels in the pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell line, AsPC-1, and the significance of GSH in tumor resistance to chemotherapy. METHODS Cell growth in AsPC-1 was initiated through ...

Vapor transport sintering ( VTS ) of calcium phosphates in various reactive atmospheres was investigated as a new fabrication method for ceramic scaffolds with fully interconnected porosity. Experiments were carried out for two different starting compositions—β‐tricalcium phosphate (β‐ TCP ) and biphasic calcium phosphate ( BCP )—within various halide atmospheres and in water vapor. During the nondensifying VTS process, grain and pore size increase simultaneously although the interconnectivity of the pores ...

Severe head injury (SHI) leads to systemic immunosuppression, which is processed by central mechanisms and is associated with a high risk of pneumonia. The timely identification of an immunodepressed condition in SHI patients might help prevent infections by changing the intensive care strategy. Anastomotic leak is one of the most severe postoperative complications and is therefore considered a benchmark for the quality of surgery for esophageal cancer. There is substantial debate on which anastomotic technique is the best for patients undergoing Ivor Lewis esophagectomy. Our standardized technique is a circular stapled anastomosis with either a 25 or 28 mm anvil. The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze whether the stapler diameter had an impact on postoperative anastomotic ...

Abstract Gephyrin ( GPHN ) regulates the clustering of postsynaptic components at inhibitory synapses and is involved in pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we uncover an extensive diversity of GPHN transcripts that are tightly controlled by splicing during mouse and human brain development. Proteomic analysis reveals at least a hundred isoforms of GPHN incorporated at inhibitory Glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptors containing synapses. They exhibit different localization ...

Abstract Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents the most aggressive pulmonary neoplasm and is often diagnosed at late stage with limited survival, despite combined chemotherapies. We show in an autochthonous mouse model of SCLC that combined anti-VEGF/anti-PD-L1–targeted therapy synergistically improves treatment outcome compared with anti–PD-L1 and anti-VEGF monotherapy. Mice treated with anti–PD-L1 alone relapsed after 3 weeks and were associated with a tumor-associated PD-1/TIM-3 double-positive ...

Many tumor cells are characterized by a dysregulated glucose metabolism associated with increased glycolysis in the presence of oxygen ("Warburg Effect"). Here, we analyzed for the first time a possible link between glucose metabolism and immune cell infiltration in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). RCC specimens revealed a highly significant increase in the expression of lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) and glucose-transporter 1 (GLUT-1) compared to the corresponding normal kidney tissue on mRNA level. Accordingly, ...

Mechanisms of tumor-mediated immunosuppression have been described for several solid and hematological tumors. Tumors inhibit immune responses by attraction of immunosuppressive lymphocytic populations, secretion of immunosuppressive cytokines or expression of surface molecules, which inhibit immune responses by induction of anergy or apoptosis in tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. This tumor-mediated immunosuppression represents a major obstacle to many immunotherapeutic or conventional therapeutic ...
