CD4-targeted therapy with a nondepleting RIB-5/2 mAb abrogates accelerated (< 36 h) rejection in presensitized LEW rats and results in permanent acceptance of LBNF1 cardiac allografts in conjunction with the features of infectious tolerance. This study examined the role and functional significance of the Th1 and Th2 cytokine network and systemic host allospecific Ab (allo-Ab) responses in the development of the infectious tolerance pathway in this model. Long term survival of cardiac transplants in ...

In adult rabbits, the CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 genes are expressed constitutively. Exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) leads to elevations in both CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 gene products (S. T. Okino et al., 1985, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 82, 5310–5314). In this report, we have characterized the rabbit CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 genes, and analyzed the pattern of expression of these genes in neonatal animals following exposure to TCDD. Genomic clones encoding the entire rabbit CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 genes ...

Measurements of the scavenging efficiency of aerosol particles in fog are presented. The scavenging efficiency as a function of size for accumulation-mode particles is presented, along with efficiencies for the total number, accumulation-mode number, and accumulation-mode volume. Particles below ca. 0.3 μm diameter were not efficiently scavenged in the fogs. The scavenging efficiency for accumulation-mode particles showed two steps, indicating that the hygroscopic/hydrophobic nature of the aerosol ...

We operated on 13 patients (14 hips) with dysplastic hips, mean age 42 (28-58) years, with a cementless Cone stem and followed them for 5 years, using the Merle d'Aubigné clinical score, conventional radiography and repeated radiostereometry analyses. The clinical scores improved markedly at 4 months and still more throughout the study. None of the patients complained of thigh pain. No stem showed radiographic subsidence, but 3 stems had radiolucent zones probably indicating fibrous ingrowth. Micromigration ...

In this study, the effect of verapamil, a phenylalkylamine-type Ca2+ antagonist, upon the activation of human mononuclear cells was investigated and a detailed analysis of the kinetics and dose related effects of verapamil upon alloreactive cytotoxic T-cells (CTL) was undertaken. Verapamil suppressed the release of interleukin-2, proliferation and generation of CTL activity in mitogen and alloantigen stimulated human T-lymphocytes in a dose related fashion. Verapamil suppressed the steady state levels ...

Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2010; 32: 984–989 Summary Background The long‐term efficacy of infliximab as rescue therapy in steroid‐refractory ulcerative colitis is not well described. Aim To examine the long‐term efficacy of infliximab as a rescue therapy through a 3‐year follow‐up of a previous placebo‐controlled trial of infliximab in acute steroid‐refractory ulcerative colitis. Method In the original study, 45 patients were randomized to a single infusion of infliximab 5 mg/kg or placebo, and at 3 ...

This 1-year double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter study evaluated the long-term safety and efficacy of cinacalcet for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients receiving hemodialysis.Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to cinacalcet or control treatment groups. The initial dose of cinacalcet (or matching placebo) was 30 mg. Doses were titrated every 3 or 4 weeks based on the intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) response and safety profile. Two and a half years (June 2002 to September 2004) of air pollution and meteorological parameters in a street canyon in Stockholm were analyzed. A distinctive dependence of particle number concentration, normalized by NOx, with ambient temperature was found. By comparison with NOx, it is concluded that this variation is not related to variability in the emissions nor due to changes in atmospheric dilution. The observed ratio between total particle number and NOx increases from ca. [150±60] particles ...

Seventy-nine individual transport cases were considered. The mean transport distance was 700 km and mean transport time 66 h. Atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) and growth significantly influences climate by supplying new seeds for cloud condensation and brightness. Currently, there is a lack of understanding of whether and how marine biota emissions affect aerosol-cloud-climate interactions in the Arctic. Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown promise for diagnosing prostate cancer in biopsies. However, results have been limited to individual studies, lacking validation in multinational settings. Competitions have been shown to be accelerators for medical imaging innovations, but their impact is hindered by lack of reproducibility and independent validation. With this in mind, we organized the PANDA challenge—the largest histopathology competition to date, joined by 1,290 developers—to catalyze ...

In addition, the way that physiological factors relate to sex dimorphism is discussed. While cultural factors played a major role in the rapid improvement of performance of women relative to men up until the 1990s, sex differences between the world's best athletes in most events have remained relatively stable at approximately 8- ...
