Abstract Background The effectiveness, safety, and pulmonary vein (PV) reconnection patterns of point‐by‐point high‐power, short‐duration (HPSD) ablation relative to conventional force‐time integral (FTI)‐guided strategies for atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation are unknown. Objectives To compare 1‐year freedom from atrial arrhythmia (AA), complication rates, procedural times, and PV reconnection patterns with HPSD AF AF ablation versus an FTI‐guided low‐power, long‐duration (LPLD) strategy. Methods We ...

The coasts of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland support a variety of tidal ranges with intertidal zones that can cover large areas and span several shoreline types. There has been an increased recognition of the ecosystem system services derived from the intertidal zone, however, evidence also suggests an overall reduction in intertidal extents since at least 1945. The intertidal zone has proven to be a difficult environment to regularly survey and map at national scales in many countries ...

AbstractBackgroundSeveral approaches have been proposed to address the challenge of catheter ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the optimal ablation strategy is unknown. We sought to evaluate the efficacy of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) plus low-voltage area (LVA) ablation using contemporary high-density mapping to identify LVA in patients with persistent AF.MethodsConsecutive patients accepted for AF catheter ablation were studied. High-density bipolar voltage mapping data ...

The rock type used in coastal engineering structures impacts biodiversity, but its effect has been understudied to date. We report here on whether different combinations of rock material and rock mass properties can improve habitat suitability and early phase ecological outcomes on coastal engineering structures. We examine two coastal engineering schemes that used different granites during construction. At site one, Shap granite boulders with a high number of cm-dm2 surface features (e.g. ledges) ...

In order to enhance the ecological value of vertical hard coastal structures, hybrid designs with complex surface textures (such as a combination of grooves and pits) have been recommended. This strategy optimises ecological colonisation at two spatial scales: 1) at the mm-scale for barnacle abundance (shown to have bioprotective capabilities), and 2) at the cm-scale for species richness and abundance through the incorporation/creation of habitat features. To determine the optimal design for improving ...

It is thought that 70% of beaches worldwide are experiencing erosion (Bird in Coastline changes: a global review, Wiley, Hoboken, 1985), and as global sea levels are rising and expected to accelerate, the management of coastal erosion is now a shared global issue. This paper aims to demonstrate a method to robustly model both the incidence of the coastal erosion hazard, the vulnerability of the population, and the exposure of coastal assets to determine coastal erosion risk, using Scotland as a case ...

The authors present key design, construction and ecological enhancement criteria for sustainable coastal defence structures at Hartlepool, UK, a high-energy wave climate. Such ‘ecologically favourable’ coastal defences fulfil the habitats directive and key engineering and cost criteria. Bird, rocky intertidal ecological and biogeomorphological data underpin recommendations for ‘passive’ enhancement mitigation to maximise ecological potential involving rock armour material choice (partially enhanced) ...

Diabetic foot ulcer treatment currently focuses on targeting bacterial biofilms, while dismissing fungi. To investigate this, we used an in vitro biofilm model containing bacteria and fungi, reflective of the wound environment, to test the impact of antimicrobials. Here we showed that while monotreatment approaches influenced biofilm composition, this had no discernible effect on overall quantity. Only by combining bacterium- and fungus-specific antibiotics were we able to decrease the biofilm bioburden, ...

The extent of Last Glacial Maximum ice in South Georgia is contested, with two alternative hypotheses: an extensive (maximum) model of ice reaching the edge of the continental shelf, or a restricted (minimum) model with ice constrained within the inner fjords. We present a new relative sea-level dataset for South Georgia, summarising published and new geomorphological evidence for the marine limit and elevations of former sea levels on the island. Using a glacial isostatic adjustment model (ALMA) specifically ...

Chronic diabetic foot ulcers are frequently colonised and infected by polymicrobial biofilms that ultimately prevent healing. This study aimed to create a novel in vitro inter-kingdom wound biofilm model on complex hydrogel-based cellulose substrata to test commonly used topical wound treatments. Inter-kingdom triadic biofilms composed of Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus were shown to be quantitatively greater in this model compared to a simple substratum when ...
