The development of aircraft has reached a stage where further progress depends upon the conquest of adverse meteorological conditions. The most promising avenue to such mastery of the elements is through adaptations of radio. Intensive work extending over two years has resulted in the development and practical demonstration of a complete set of radio aids to flying on the civil airways of the United States. This development was carried on by the Bureau of Standards for the Aeronautics Branch of ...

The combined effects of apparent wave direction shifts and fading, of signals from a crossed coil type of radio beacon as received on airplanes in flight at night, are described. A brief explanation of the operation of such a beacon is given. The results of observations of similar signals at night received on an automobile, together with some general conclusions, are mentioned.

The fundamental value of universal nomenclatural systems in biology is that they enable unambiguous scientific communication. However, the stability of these systems is threatened by recent discussions asking for a fairer nomenclature, raising the possibility of bulk revision processes for "inappropriate" names. It is evident that such proposals come from very deep feelings, but we show how they can irreparably damage the foundation of biological communication and, in turn, the sciences that depend ...

Field strength characteristic relationships, applicable to the double modulation type of directive radio beacon when modulation is applied, are developed. Graphs showing the characteristic patterns which govern the indications of the receiving apparatus as it moves around in space about the transmitter are given for three typical sets of transmitter adjustments.

ONE hundred and sixty-four years ago Galvani discovered the existence of current electricity, previous knowledge having been confined to static electricity and the spark discharges associated with it. Significant additional fundamental discoveries made by Volta, Oersted, and Faraday provided the knowledge that enabled Morse to develop the practical instrumentality of the wire telegraph which used direct current interrupted in accordance with the code which he devised. Later Bell developed the telephone ...

The outward physical manifestations of heat, power, and radioactivity unleashed do not represent the true significance of the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Since the short period after Hiroshima and Nagasaki when an earnest and humble effort was made to find the right answer to the control of nuclear fission a generally complacent attitude has developed. That the peoples and rulers of the world need to be educated to the revolutionary conditions related to the atomic bomb there can be no doubt ...

This month's cover illustration is a representation of the way a portion of the sky would appear if our eyes were sensitive to radio waves rather than to light. The contours indicate the equivalent brightness temperature of the sky background; the light and dark areas represent, respectively, strong and weak radio emission.Although the science of radio astronomy is only 33 years old, it has greatly increased our knowledge of the universe and changed many of our theories about it.
