There are many settings where individual person data (IPD) are not available, due to privacy or technical reasons, and one must work with IPD proxies, such as summary statistics, to approximate original IPD inferences, that is, the results of statistical analyses that would ideally have been performed on individual‐level data. For instance, in a distributed computing setting, as implemented in the DataSHIELD software framework, different centers can only share IPD proxies to obtain pooled IPD inferences. ...

We measure for the first time transient absorption spectra of individual CdSe nanowires with about 10 nm diameter. Confinement of the carrier wave functions leads to discrete states which can be described by a six-band effective mass model. Combining transient absorption and luminescence spectroscopy allows us to track the excitation dynamics in the visible and near-infrared spectral range. About 10% of all absorbed photons lead to an excitation of the lowest energy state. Of these excitations, ...

Chest pain units (CPUs) are increasingly established in emergency cardiology services. With improved visibility of CPUs in the population, patients may refer themselves directly to these units, obviating emergency medical services (EMS). Little is known about characteristics and outcomes of self-referred patients, as compared with those referred by EMS. Therefore, we described self-referral patients enrolled in the CPU-registry of the German Cardiac Society and compared them with those referred by ...

Prognostic models for time-to-event data play a prominent role in therapy assignment, risk stratification and inter-hospital quality assurance. The assessment of their prognostic value is vital not only for responsible resource allocation, but also for their widespread acceptance. The additional presence of competing risks to the event of interest requires proper handling not only on the model building side, but also during assessment. Research into methods for the evaluation of the prognostic potential ...

The reinfusion of autologous blood to enhance performance remains a significant problem in sports. Although allogeneic blood transfusions can be detected since 2003 [1], there is at present no detection method for autologous blood transfusions, although indirect approaches such as the biological passport [2] might give indications on the illicit use of blood transfusions. It is well-documented that several molecular changes occur in stored red blood cells (RBCs), commonly referred to as the 'storage ...

In the process of developing risk prediction models, various steps of model building and model selection are involved. If this process is not adequately controlled, overfitting may result in serious overoptimism leading to potentially erroneous conclusions. For right censored time-to-event data, we estimate the prediction error for assessing the performance of a risk prediction model (Gerds and Schumacher, 2006; Graf et al., 1999). Furthermore, resampling methods are used to detect overfitting and ...

Abstract Forest landscape dynamics result from the complex interaction of driving forces and ecological processes operating on various scales. Projected climate change for the 21st century will alter climate‐sensitive processes, causing shifts in species composition and also bringing about changes in disturbance regimes, particularly regarding wildfires. Previous studies of the impact of climate change on forests have focused mainly on the direct effects of climate. In the present study, we assessed ...

Long-term forest landscape dynamics are determined by a set of driving forces including large-scale natural disturbances, land-use, the physical environment, and stand-scale succession processes. Landscape models have an important role as tools for synthesizing existing information and making projections of possible future vegetation dynamics on large spatial scales. However, current landscape models cannot readily be used to study: (1) the change from weakly to strongly disturbed landscapes; (2) ...

Macrophages are key innate immune cells that mediate implant acceptance or rejection. Titanium implants degrade over time inside the body, which results in the release of implant wear-off particles. Titanium nanoparticles (TiNPs) favor pro-inflammatory macrophage polarization (M1) and lower tolerogenic activation (M2). GDF-15 regulates immune tolerance and fibrosis and is endocytosed by stabilin-1. How TiNPs affect the healing activities of macrophages and their release of circulating cytokines is ...

Abstract When fitting predictive survival models to high‐dimensional data, an adequate criterion for selecting model complexity is needed to avoid overfitting. The complexity parameter is typically selected by the predictive partial log‐likelihood (PLL) estimated via cross‐validation. As an alternative criterion, we propose a relative version of the integrated prediction error curve (IPEC), which can be stably estimated via bootstrap resampling. The IPEC has the advantage of being applicable for models ...

The purpose of this study was to examine if the energetic potentials of chicken manure can be used more efficiently in the biogas process by means of pre-treatment with pressure swing conditioning (PSC). Two sub-questions were of interest: the effect of pre-treatment on the nitrogen content in the manure and the effect of pre-treatment on the methane yield. Six variants of PSC were examined concerning nitrogen content and methane yield in batch tests. PSC-variant 150 °C/5 min showed an increase methane ...

In 12 elderly patients, plasma, prostatic secretion and adenoma tissue concentrations of fleroxacin were determined 1-4 h following oral administration of 400 mg. The plasma concentrations ranged between 0.4 and 5.5 micrograms/ml (median 3.7 micrograms/ml), the mean tissue concentrations were slightly higher. The concentrations in prostatic secretion were about one third of the simultaneous plasma concentrations. High concentrations of the concomitantly administered ioxithalamic acid in prostatic ...

Fleroxacin is a new fluoroquinolone with a broad antibacterial spectrum and a serum half-life of about 8-12 h. Eighty percent of 400 isolates from complicated or hospital-acquired urinary tract infections were inhibited by a concentration of 1 mg/l and 95% by 4 mg/l. As with other quinolones, fleroxacin is less active in acid urine (pH 5.4) than in Mueller-Hinton broth (pH 7.4). In 12 healthy volunteers the concentrations of fleroxacin were measured in plasma and seminal and prostatic fluid 2, 4 and ...

The influence of sterically hindered functional groups on liquid crystalline properties is studied for two series of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic tetraesters and diimides. The results indicate an enhanced mesophase range owing to the decrease of the melting temperature. The role of axial chirality is also studied by comparing the liquid crystalline properties of unilaterally and bilaterally extended perylene derivatives. In summary, both bulky substituents and distortion of the polycyclic aromatic ...

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) and metastatic poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas (PDTCs) are rare aggressive malignancies with poor overall survival (OS) despite extensive multimodal therapy.
