A spectrum of a metastable molecule has been observed in the region 6000 to 7100 Å after flash photolysis of t -butyl nitrite. The analysis of this spectrum strongly suggests that the absorption is due to a π * — n (N) transition of nitrosomethane, and that the largest geometry change on electronic excitation is an increase by about 8° in the CNO angle. Unusual vibrational features in this spectrum are interpreted in terms of a decrease in the barrier to torsion of the CH 3 group about the CN bond from ...

An approximate open-shell theory, based on the CNDO method, has been developed and applied to the calculation of the excited-state molecular parameters of several small polyatomic molecules. The key feature of this theory is that it optimizes the molecular orbitals for the excited-state electron configuration. A comparison of the results of this theory with those of a virtual-orbital theory [H. W. Kroto and D. P. Santry, J. Chem. Phys. 47, 792, (1967), Paper I], which differs only in the fact that ...

The analysis of a new electronic absorption spectrum observed during the flash photolysis of cyanogen azide, NCN 3 , in the region 3 327 Å indicates that the spectrum belongs to a 1 Π u – 1 Δ g transition of NCN. The 1 Δ g state is metastable with respect to the [Formula: see text] ground state. The bond distance in the 1 Δ g state is 1.228 5 Å. The value of the Renner splitting parameter, εω 2 , for the 1 Π u state has been determined as −84.2 cm −1 .

A semiempirical theory of transition energies and molecular excited-state geometries is developed. The excited-state electronic wavefunction is approximated by a single determinant constructed using a virtual orbital obtained from the minimization of the energy of the ground-state electron configuration. This theory represents a semiquantitative study of the accepted qualitative description of molecular spectra. Results are presented for HNO, HCF, H2CO, H2C2, and NH3. The calculated bond angles, ...

The processes occurring during the vapour-phase flash photolysis of cyanogen azide have been studied. Several new gas-phase band systems have been observed and evidence obtained to support their assignments is presented. Two of the systems are assigned as 1Δuâ† a1Δg and 3Σ–uâ†X3Σ–g of NCN and one of the other two to HNCN. Kinetic measurements have also been made which showed that in the presence of an inert gas cyanogen azide is re-formed. The 3Σ–uâ†X3Σ–g transition of NCN is diffuse indicating ...

A new vacuum ultraviolet photoelectron spectrum of a short-lived species has been observed in the products of a discharge through CS2 vapour. As the major product under these conditions is known to be the unstable CS, the new spectrum has been assigned to this molecule. The first ionisation potential is found to be 11.33 ± 0.02 eV which is close to the result obtained by other techniques. The evidence for this assignment is discussed.

The first band has an adiabatic IP of 10.45 +- 0.01 eV and has been assigned to the ionization of the sulphur 3p [b2] electron.
