Debye's derivation of the Ornstein—Zernike modification of Einstein's theory of critical opalescence is reviewed. It is shown that Debye's free-energy function leads to a modification of the Landau theory for the width of the Rayleigh line which is equivalent to the results of Fixman, Botch, and Felderhof. This equivalence is utilized to predict the magnitude of the departure of Rayleigh linewidths from the Landau prediction by comparison with the results of angular-scattering intensity measurements. ...

The Rayleigh linewidth $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ of xenon was measured on the critical isochore between 0.003 and 5.0\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C above ${T}_{c}$. In the hydrodynamic region ($q\ensuremath{\xi}<~0.2$) we find $\ensuremath{\Gamma}={q}^{2}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{0}{[\frac{(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c})}{{T}_{c}}]}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\psi}}$ with ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{0}=(6.94\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.21)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ ${\mathrm{ ...

The sound velocity in xenon on the critical isochore was determined in Brillouin scattering measurements at scattering angles of 40\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} and 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. The sound dispersion calculated from our data, ultrasonic data, and other Brillouin data agrees with the Kawasaki theory for a particular choice of parameters, but the dispersion in the Brillouin velocities is 2 to 3 times smaller than the theory predicts when values obtained for the parameters ...

We have measured the Rayleigh linewidth in C${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ in the critical region using a self-beat spectrometer. The linewidth was measured as a function of both temperature and cell height. The thermal diffusivity $\ensuremath{\chi}$ calculated using the Landau-Placzek equation is in excellent agreement with the values that have been obtained by thermodynamic measurements at three temperatures within the temperature range we investigated ($T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c}=\ensuremath{-}1.04$, +1.06, and + ...

In two entirely independent experiments we have measured the Rayleight linewidth for S${\mathrm{F}}_{6}$ on the critical isochore and the results are found to be in strong disagreement with previously reported measurements. Our linewidth data, after subtraction of background terms, exhibit the same critical behavior observed in other fluid systems ($\ensuremath{\phi}=0.61\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04$). Within the experimental uncertainty our results agree with linewidths calculated from the Kawasaki ...

For many flows the first one or two instabilities reached as the Reynolds number is increased are well understood both theoretically and experimentally. However, the successive instabilities leading ultimately to turbulent flow are not well understood for any single system, and it is not known to what extent there exist universal characteristics of the transition to turbulence for different flows. The theoretical and experimental approaches that have been used in the past to study the first one ...

Fluid flows have been studied systematically for more than a century and their equations of motion are well known, yet the transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow remains an enigma. The difficulty lies in the intractability of the nonlinear hydrodynamic equations that express the conservation of mass, momentum and energy for a fluid continuum. Although these equations can be linearized and readily solved for a system near thermodynamic equilibrium, the solutions of the nonlinear equations— ...

A length of 8950 ± 200 Å and a diameter of 90 ± 10 Å have been obtained for fd virus from a simultaneous solution of the Broersma equations relating the length and diameter of a rod-like particle to its rotational, DR, and translational, DT, diffusion coefficients. Measurements of DR were by transient electric birefringence, and of DT by low-angle intensity fluctuation spectroscopy. A mass of (16.4 ± 0.6) × 106 daltons was calculated from the Svedberg equation using our measured values of DT, the sedimentation ...

The linear stability of flow in a Couette-Taylor system with counterrotating cylinders is posed as an initial-value problem. The time-asymptotic solution is found by the method of steepest descent. We identify the saddle points of the complex dispersion relation and, from the growth rates evaluated at the saddle points, determine a Reynolds number range ${\mathit{R}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\le}R\ensuremath{\le}${\mathit{R}}_{\mathit{a}}$ within which the instability is convective and beyond which ( ...

A one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation is used to model a class of experimental open chemical systems in which spatiotemporal patterns can be sustained indefinitely. Numerical simulations for the model in parameter regimes corresponding to experiment reveal only low-dimensional behavior. The observed bifurcation sequence leads from steady state concentration profiles to temporally chaotic patterns. The physical mechanism that causes this behavior is deduced from analysis of the local dynamics: ...

We have studied mass transport in a turbulent flow with large coherent structures---turbulent Taylor vortices. A pulse of dye is injected in fluid contained between concentric cylinders (with the inner one rotating and the outer one fixed), and the time dependence of the dye concentration at two axial positions is then determined from optical absorption measurements. The measurements have been made for radius ratios \ensuremath{\eta} ranging from 0.494 to 0.875, and at Reynolds numbers R ranging from ...

We have conducted an experiment on the transition from quasiperiodic to weakly turbulent flow of a fluid contained between concentric cylinders with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer cylinder at rest. Power spectra, phase-space portraits, and circle maps obtained from velocity time-series data indicate that the nonperiodic behavior which we have observed is deterministic, that is, it is described by strange attractors. We discuss various problems that arise in computing the dimension of ...

In experiments on the Belousov–Zhabotinskii reaction in a flow reactor we have observed dynamical behavior that is described well by one-dimensional maps with a single maximum. A sequence of period doubling bifurcations was observed as a parameter was varied, and beyond the accumulation point for the period doubling sequence there was a sequence of periodic states that has the same symbolic dynamics as the states of the U (universal) sequence of Metropolis, Stein, and Stein (1973). However, in another ...
