Summary As the mechanisms underlying persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) are still incompletely understood, a ‘gold standard’ strategy for ablation is lacking. The results of catheter ablation, independent of the ablation strategy applied, are disappointing. Hybrid ablation, combining a thoracoscopic epicardial and transvenous endocardial approach, has shown more favourable outcomes. To date, studies comparing both techniques are lacking. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis ...

Preeclampsia is characterized by deficient trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling, a process governed by inflammatory cells. High levels of the danger signal extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) have been found in women with preeclampsia and infusion of ATP in pregnant rats induced preeclampsia-like symptoms such as albuminuria and placental ischemia. We hypothesized that ATP inhibits trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling and affects macrophages and natural killer (NK) ...

Summary Strawberry ( F ragaria × ananassa ) fruits contain high concentrations of flavonoids. In unripe strawberries, the flavonoids are mainly represented by proanthocyanidins ( PA s), while in ripe fruits the red‐coloured anthocyanins also accumulate. Most of the structural genes leading to PA biosynthesis in strawberry have been characterized, but no information is available on their transcriptional regulation. In A rabidopsis thaliana the expression of the PA biosynthetic genes is specifically induced ...

Despite extensive use of oral anticoagulation (OAC) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and the increased bleeding risk associated with such OAC use, no handy quantification tool for assessing this risk exists. We aimed to develop a practical risk score to estimate the 1-year risk for major bleeding (intracranial, hospitalization, hemoglobin decrease > 2 g/L, and/or transfusion) in a cohort of real-world patients with AF.Based on 3,978 patients in the Euro Heart Survey on AF with complete follow- ...

ABSTRACT Rotavirus (RV) cell entry is an incompletely understood process, involving VP4 and VP7, the viral proteins composing the outermost layer of the nonenveloped RV triple-layered icosahedral particle (TLP), encasing VP6. VP4 can exist in three conformational states: soluble, cleaved spike, and folded back. In order to better understand the events leading to RV entry, we established a detection system to image input virus by monitoring the rhesus RV (RRV) antigens VP4, VP6, and VP7 at very early ...

The aim of this study was to compare outcome and quality of life of tension-free vaginal tape "inside-out" (TVT-O) and Monarc transobturator tapes after 2–4 years. The method used was a prospective comparative study. Participants (n = 191) were assigned to either a TVT-O (n = 93) or a Monarc (n = 98) procedure. Cure of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) was defined as the statement of the woman of not experiencing any loss of urine upon physical exercise. Cure rates after 2–4 years were 72% for TVT-O and 65% ...

It is poorly understood how mechanical stimuli influence in vivo myocardial remodeling during chronic hemodynamic overload. Combined quantitation of ventricular mechanics and expression of key proteins involved in mechanotransduction can improve fundamental understanding. Adult anesthetized dogs (n = 20) were studied at sinus rhythm (SR) and 0, 3, 10, and 35 days of complete atrioventricular block (AVB). Serial left ventricular (LV) myofiber mechanics were measured. Repeated LV biopsies were analyzed ...

PurposeThe prevalence of most minor cardiovascular manifestations in Marfan syndrome (MFS) is unknown. We assessed the prevalence of minor cardiovascular manifestations in MFS to evaluate their usefulness in a diagnostic setting.MethodsSeventy-seven patients with MFS (aged 4 months to 55 years) underwent echocardiography to assess the presence of mitral valve prolapse and the diameter of the main pulmonary artery. A subset of 29 adult patients with MFS also underwent magnetic resonance imaging evaluation ...

Flavonoids are a large family of plant polyphenolic secondary metabolites. Although they are widespread throughout the plant kingdom, some flavonoid classes are specific for only a few plant species. Due to their presumed health benefits there is growing interest in the development of food crops with tailor-made levels and composition of flavonoids, designed to exert an optimal biological effect. In order to explore the possibilities of flavonoid engineering in tomato fruits, we have targeted this ...

The inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) promoter contains nuclear factor κB (NF–κB) binding sites. NF–κB activation is determined, in part, by the intracellular redox status. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of the cellular glutathione status in relation to NF–κB activation and iNOS expression in hepatocytes in vivo and in vitro . For in vivo experiments, rats were injected with endotoxin and sacrificed 6 hours later. Glutathione was depleted by diethylmaleate. For in vitro experiments, ...
