Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to analyze single-layered hexagonal boron-nitride with or without point defects. EELS profiles using a 0.1 nm probe clearly discriminate the chemical species of single atoms but show different delocalization of the boron and nitrogen K edges. A monovacancy at the boron site is unambiguously identified and the electronic state of its nearest neighboring nitrogen atoms is examined by energy-loss near edge fine structure analysis, which demonstrates a ...

Glutathione-related enzymes glyoxalase 1 and glutathione reductase 1 regulates anxiety in mice. To clarify the central function of glutathione as a neurotransmitter in the stress reaction, the effect of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of reduced (GSH) (0.5, 1, 2 μmol) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione (0.25, 0.5, 1 μmol) were investigated under an isolation-induced stress in the neonatal chick. Both GSH and GSSG dose-dependently decreased distress vocalizations and induced sleep-like behavior ...

Nanotemplated growth of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) inside carbon nanotubes is a promising mean to fabricate ultrathin ribbons with desired side edge configuration. We report the optical properties of the GNRs formed in single-wall carbon nanotubes. When coronene is used as the precursor, extended GNRs are grown via a high-temperature annealing at 700 °C. Their optical responses are probed through the diazonium-based side-wall functionalization, which effectively suppresses the excitonic absorption ...

The alloying behaviour of materials is a well-known problem in all kinds of compounds. Revealing the heteroatomic distributions in two-dimensional crystals is particularly critical for their practical use as nano-devices. Here we obtain statistics of the homo- and heteroatomic coordinates in single-layered Mo(1-x)W(x)S(2) from the atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscope images and successfully quantify the degree of alloying for the transition metal elements (Mo or W). The results ...

The bioassay-guided fractionation of an Okeania sp. marine cyanobacterium collected in Okinawa led to the isolation of the lipopeptide mabuniamide (1). The gross structure of 1 was determined by spectroscopic analyses, and its absolute configuration was determined using Marfey's analysis of the acid hydrolysate of 1. The absolute configuration of 1 was confirmed by total synthesis. Mabuniamide (1) stimulated glucose uptake in cultured rat L6 myotubes. In addition, mabuniamide (1) and its stereoisomer ( ...

To identify the important structural components of glutathione that induce sedative and hypnotic effects, intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of three glutathione-related dipeptides, i.e., glutamyl-cysteine (Glu-Cys), cysteinyl-glycine (Cys-Gly) and glutamyl-glycine (Glu-Gly) were given during an acute stress condition in neonatal chicks. These peptides attenuated distress vocalizations and spontaneous activity induced by social isolation. The increase in the time for sedation including sleep ...

Three-dimensionally printed objects with photo-curable resin generally have high toxicity to cells, making it difficult to apply them to living systems. This paper reports a technique to construct a three-dimensional object in a glass chamber by aggregating microgels, which are polymers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NiPAm) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). We aggregated the microgels whose have a higher biocompatibility than the photo-curable resin by relatively diamagnetic assembly. Microgels were positively ...

A biocompatible soft micromachine is desirable to manipulate small biological objects like cells. This paper evaluated thermal responses of thermal responsive microgel aggregate to utilize as an actuator. The microgel aggregate was fabricated by gathering both microgels charged positively and negatively based on relative diamagnetic assembly. The aggregate shrank when it was heated up to 40 °C and expanded when it was returned to room temperature. The area shrinkage ratio between 25 to 40 °C was about ...

Two new jahanyne analogues, jahanene and jahanane, highly N-methylated lipopeptides, were isolated from a marine cyanobacterium Okeania sp., and their structures were determined by NMR and MS. In addition, we achieved total syntheses of the jahanyne family and assessed their activities. The resulting growth-inhibitory activity of jahanyne was nearly one-tenth of the previously reported activity. Furthermore, we found that the degree of unsaturation at the terminus of the fatty acid moiety affected ...

Spring runoff is mostly comprised snowmelt and is very important on water resource as public water and etc. And Many studies have been conducted on forecasting and estimation of snowmelt volume. In this paper, firstly, characteristic ofsnowmelt runoff is investigated using spectral analysis. Next, Snowmelt water is estimated by Heat budget method that takes in planting cover information in the Yuda basin. And it is investigated that plant cover distribution have influence on snowmelt water. It is ...

Caldorazole (1) is a novel polyketide that was isolated from a marine cyanobacterium in 2022. It is a unique natural product that exhibits potent inhibitory activity against mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I despite having no chiral centers. To establish a method for obtaining caldorazole without relying on biological resources and for constructing a useful synthetic route for studies of its structure–activity relationship, we achieved the first total synthesis of caldorazole using a convergent ...
