Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in profoundly neutropenic patients. Delayed diagnosis and therapy may lead to poor outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess the performance characteristics of the galactomannan (GM) assay in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage specimens for the diagnosis of IA in neutropenic patients with hematological malignancies. We also evaluated the prognostic outcome. A total of 1198 serum samples and 42 BAL from 235 neutropenic ...

Objective: Research in sports medicine and exercise science has experienced significant growth over recent years. With this expansion, there has been a concomitant rise in ethical challenges specific to these disciplines. While various ethical guidelines exist for numerous scientific fields, a comprehensive set tailored specifically for sports medicine and exercise science is lacking. Aiming to bridge this gap, this paper proposes a comprehensive, updated set of ethical guidelines specifically targeted ...

SUMMARY The paper presents an experimental and numerical study to investigate the behavior of desiccated clayey soils. The performed tests permit to evaluate the crack pattern as well as the tensile strength as a function of suction. A new model that relates the porosity evolution to the suction and to the tensile strength was developed and implemented in the finite element program CODE_BRIGHT. The proposed model captured the initiation and propagation of cracks in a thin layer of desiccated clay ...

Aspergillusflavus is the second leading cause of invasive and non-invasive aspergillosis. Secretion of hydrolytic enzymes is considered as a virulence factor in this species. Our work aimed to study in vitro production of some virulence factors, to evaluate the biofilm production against human and avian A. flavus isolates and to investigate the antifungal susceptibility agents. Hydrolytic enzymes, biofilm production and molecular typing were studied for 62 human and 36 avian A. flavus isolates by ...

The current paper presents an investigation on the tensile strength of unsaturated clay, and a discussion about the significant differences between the behaviours of compacted soils and those of the completely remoulded soils. The adapted experimental device based on the shear box for the measurement of the tensile strength is also presented. In the tensile tests, stress-strain characteristics are measured using high precision transducers and electronic data acquisition. The equipment is capable ...

Dehairing is one of the highly polluting operations in the leather industry. The conventional lime-sulfide process used for dehairing produces large amounts of sulfide, which poses serious toxicity and disposal problems. This operation also involves hair destruction, a process that leads to increased chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solid (TSS) loads in the effluent. With these concerns in mind, enzyme-assisted dehairing has often been proposed as an ...

Cohesive soil was often submitted to the shrinkage when it is dried. Constrained shrinkage and heterogeneity of the soil in terms of density or porosity and water content conduct to cracks of the fine soil. The unsaturated permeability as a function of suction changes significantly with cracks number and opening. The paper aims to study the flow exchange flow in the unsaturated cracked clay flow, by measurement of the unsaturated permeability using tensiometer and hygrometer sensors in cracked specimens ...

The aim of this work was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of Arthrospira platensis Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) for colon cancer and kidney cell lines. Results showed that EPS were free from cytotoxic effects. A variety of solvents were assessed for their ability to extract the bioactive ingredients from EPS. Methanol gave the highest yield (75.75%) than other solvents. The extracts were tested for activities against a collection of Gram+/- bacteria. The methanol extract exhibited a more potent ...

PURPOSE The Lynch syndrome (LS)-glioma association is poorly documented. As for mismatch repair deficiency (MMRd) in glioma, a hallmark of LS-associated tumors, there are only limited data available. We determined MMRd and LS prevalence in a large series of unselected gliomas, and explored the associated characteristics. Both have major implications in terms of treatment, screening, and prevention. METHODS Somatic next-generation sequencing was performed on 1,225 treatment-naive adult gliomas referred ...

Abstract. This paper addresses the development and characterization of a non-intrusive silicon-based microsensor, which can detect electric partial discharges in electrical insulation equipment. Early partial discharge detection prevents failures and can be used to optimize maintenance operations. Despite the potential that CMOS technology offers, miniaturized electric discharge detector has neither been investigated nor implemented, until now. The developed microsensor demonstrates its ability ...

Abstract. This study aimed at screening genetic diversity and differentiation in four horse breeds raised in Tunisia, the Barb, Arab-Barb, Arabian, and English Thoroughbred breeds. A total of 200 blood samples (50 for each breed) were collected from the jugular veins of animals, and genomic DNA was extracted. The analysis of the genetic structure was carried out using a panel of 16 microsatellite loci. Results showed that all studied microsatellite markers were highly polymorphic in all breeds.
