Extensive efforts to gather materials data have largely overlooked potential data redundancy. In this study, we present evidence of a significant degree of redundancy across multiple large datasets for various material properties, by revealing that up to 95% of data can be safely removed from machine learning training with little impact on in-distribution prediction performance. The redundant data is related to over-represented material types and does not mitigate the severe performance degradation ...

Abstract Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have led to substantial performance improvement in material database benchmarks, but an excellent benchmark score may not imply good generalization performance. Here we show that ML models trained on Materials Project 2018 can have severely degraded performance on new compounds in Materials Project 2021 due to the distribution shift. We discuss how to foresee the issue with a few simple tools. Firstly, the uniform manifold approximation and projection ( ...

Insufficient availability of molten salt corrosion-resistant alloys severely limits the fruition of a variety of promising molten salt technologies that could otherwise have significant societal impacts. To accelerate alloy development for molten salt applications and develop fundamental understanding of corrosion in these environments, here an integrated approach is presented using a set of high-throughput (HTP) alloy synthesis, corrosion testing, and modeling coupled with automated characterization ...

Lack of crystalline order in amorphous alloys, commonly called metallic glasses (MGs), tends to make them harder and more wear-resistant than their crystalline counterparts. However, finding inexpensive MGs is daunting; finding one with enhanced wear resistance is a further challenge. Relying on machine learning (ML) predictions of MGs alone requires a highly precise model; however, incorporating high-throughput (HiTp) experiments into the search rapidly leads to higher performing materials even from ...

Abstract Applied machine learning has rapidly spread throughout the physical sciences. In fact, machine learning-based data analysis and experimental decision-making have become commonplace. Here, we reflect on the ongoing shift in the conversation from proving that machine learning can be used, to how to effectively implement it for advancing materials science. In particular, we advocate a shift from a big data and large-scale computations mentality to a model-oriented approach that prioritizes ...

Over the past decades, continual advancement of computational power has led to the prevalence of automation across science, industry, and society, whereby digital solutions were developed algorithmically to exploit technical knowledge of a problem. However, we are currently entering a critical period of computational innovation, particularly in materials science. Non-intuitive materials acceleration for societal solutions (MASS) can now potentially be uncovered by computational machine learning, ...

One of the key factors in enabling trust in artificial intelligence within the materials science community is the interpretability (or explainability) of the underlying models used. By understanding what features were used to generate predictions, scientists are then able to critically evaluate the credibility of the predictions and gain new insights. Here, we demonstrate that ignoring hyperparameters viewed as less impactful to the overall model performance can deprecate model explainability. Specifically, ...

Solutions to many of the world's problems depend upon materials research and development. However, advanced materials can take decades to discover and decades more to fully deploy. Humans and robots have begun to partner to advance science and technology orders of magnitude faster than humans do today through the development and exploitation of closed-loop, autonomous experimentation systems. This review discusses the specific challenges and opportunities related to materials discovery and development ...

Thin films of two types of high-entropy oxides (HEOs) have been deposited on 76.2 mm Si wafers using combinatorial sputter deposition. In one type of the oxides, (MgZnMnCoNi)Ox, all the metals have a stable divalent oxidation state and similar cationic radii. In the second type of oxides, (CrFeMnCoNi)Ox, the metals are more diverse in the atomic radius and valence state, and have good solubility in their sub-binary and ternary oxide systems. The resulting HEO thin films were characterized using several ...

Active learning-the field of machine learning (ML) dedicated to optimal experiment design-has played a part in science as far back as the 18th century when Laplace used it to guide his discovery of celestial mechanics. In this work, we focus a closed-loop, active learning-driven autonomous system on another major challenge, the discovery of advanced materials against the exceedingly complex synthesis-processes-structure-property landscape. We demonstrate an autonomous materials discovery methodology ...
