The participation of service users in the planning and delivery of social work services has become a familiar objective in the UK. Policy injunctions, however, mask a lack of clarity around what is meant by terms such as 'participation' and 'engagement'. Moreover, since many service users do not engage with social workers voluntarily, the expectation that they become centrally involved in the planning and delivery of services highlights tensions and contradictions. This article explores social work ...

Newly developed borehole closed circuit television (CCTV) lighting has shown that films of water can develop on open borehole walls at discrete levels within the deep unsaturated zone of the chalk, the levels being associated with marl horizons. The CCTV images, together with jacking tensiometers, have been used to observe unsaturated zone processes in selected boreholes. Work focused on two catchments in southern England, the Pang in Berkshire and the Brighton ‘block’ in Sussex. Deep jacking tensiometers ...

The standard method for isolation of ES cells from strain 129 mice does not give rise to ES lines of CBA origin. We investigated the effect of inhibition of MEK/ERK signaling in combination with increased stimulation of gp130 signaling on derivation of ES cells from CBA blastocysts. Inhibition of MEKI and MEKII using the drug U0126 and stimulation of gp130 signaling by elevating the level of LIF present gave rise to ES-like lines in 22.6% of explants. We propose that these embodied cognition views hold implications for clinical reasoning. This article examines the role of embodiment and intersubjective interactions between patient and therapist in clinical reasoning in psychotherapy. It offers a phenomenologically informed enactive conception of clinical reasoning and characterises it as an ongoing embodied, embedded ...

There are no studies evaluating a large population of adult horses treated for botulism. Reported survival rates in outbreak situations are low; however, many horses in outbreaks do not receive treatment. That adult horses treated at a veterinary hospital would have improved survival compared to outbreak situations. Additional aims included identification of predictors of nonsurvival. All horses greater than 6 months of age with a final diagnosis of botulism admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital ...

ABSTRACT Efavirenz (also known as DMP 266 or SUSTIVA) is a potent nonnucleoside inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT) activity and of HIV-1 replication in vitro and in vivo. Most patients on efavirenz-containing regimens have sustained antiviral responses; however, rebounds in plasma viral load have been observed in some patients in association with the emergence of mutant strains of HIV-1. Abstract Carbonic anhydrase buffers tissue pH by catalyzing the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) and bicarbonate (HCO3−). We assessed the functional activity of CAIX in two colorectal tumor models, expressing different levels of the enzyme, by measuring the rate of exchange of hyperpolarized 13C label between bicarbonate (H13CO3−) and carbon dioxide (13CO2), following injection of hyperpolarized H13CO3−, using 13C-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C-MRS) magnetization transfer measurements. ...
