A standard diet for zebrafish, based on their specific nutritional requirements, is of primary importance to improve experimental outcomes with this model organism and optimize its large-scale production. However, the main basic nutritional requirements of zebrafish are yet to be determined. This study aimed at contributing to fill this gap by evaluating the dietary protein requirement of zebrafish juvenile. Ten isoenergetic fishmeal-based diets with increasing protein levels (15%-60%) were formulated, ...

Oilseed cakes have potential for new applications as substrates for solid-state fermentation (SSF), to increase their nutritional value by increasing its polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) or protein content. In this sense, it was performed a screening of oilseed cakes to be used as substrates for the production of PUFAs by Mortierella alpina Peyronel MUM 9412. Of all by-products tested, linseed cake (LSC) was the oilseed cake that achieved the highest production of total PUFAs: 153.09 ± 2.25 mg/g. ...

Osteosarcoma is usually associated with a disturbed bone metabolism. The aim of this work was to characterize the reciprocal interactions between MG63 osteosarcoma cells and osteoclasts, in a co-culture system. Co-cultures were characterized throughout 21 days for the osteoclastogenic response and the expression of osteoblastic markers. Monocultures of MG63 cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) and co-cultures of PBMC + human bone marrow cells (hBMC) were also performed. Compared to PBMC ...

Osteoclasts are descended from the CD14(+) monocyte/macrophage lineage, but influence of other haematopoietic cells on osteoclastic commitment of their precursors has remained poorly understood. In this study, osteoclastogenic behaviour of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and their CD14(+) and CD14(-) subpopulations has been accessed, in the absence or presence of M-CSF and RANKL.Cell cultures were characterized for presence of actin rings and vitronectin and calcitonin receptors, TRAP activity ...

Case report: To report the case of a 58-year-old man with blurred vision and metamorphopsia who had an amelanotic choroidal mass in the right eye as the presenting sign of a small cell lung carcinoma. Systemic screening failed to reveal a tumor elsewhere, and the lesion was initially treated as a primary ocular tumor. Discovery of the primary site was made 10 months after the ocular diagnosis, and the patient was then treated with systemic chemotherapy and local radiation therapy. Comments: The ...

In this work a biofunctional composite coating architecture for controlled corrosion activity and enhanced cellular adhesion of AZ31 Mg alloys is proposed. The composite coating consists of a polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix modified with nanohydroxyapatite (HA) applied over a nanometric layer of polyetherimide (PEI). The protective properties of the coating were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), a non-disturbing technique, and the coating morphology was investigated by field emission ...

The high corrosion rate of magnesium alloys is the main drawback to their widespread use, especially in biomedical applications. There is a need for developing new coatings that provide simultaneously corrosion resistance and enhanced biocompatibility. In this work, a composite coating containing polyether imide, with several diethylene triamine and hydroxyapatite contents, was applied on AZ31 magnesium alloys pre-treated with hydrofluoric acid by dip coating. The coated samples were immersed in ...

Abstract Olive pomace is characterized by its low nutritional value and high phenolic content, which hinders its direct use as animal feed, fertilizer, or as a substrate in bioprocesses such as solid‐state fermentation (SSF). A possible strategy for bioprocessing olive pomace by SSF is the mixture of olive mill wastes with other wastes produced in the same region, such as winery wastes. This may improve the production of bioactive compounds like enzymes and antioxidant phenolics. A simplex‐centroid ...

This work had as main objectives to characterize two bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) previously isolated from non-fermented seafood, in order to evaluate their potential as new food protective agents. The two bacteriocinogenic isolates were identified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using genus- and species-specific primers, and confirmed by 16S rDNA sequencing, as Enterococcus faecium and Pediococcus pentosaceus. The antimicrobial spectrum of each strain included several indicator ...

Abstract Statement of problem Microgap and bacterial microleakage at the implant-prosthetic abutment interface are recognized concerns for implant-supported restorations, leading to inflammation of the peri-implant tissues, with deleterious consequences for crestal bone levels. However, little is known regarding the interface established between the implant and the healing abutment or cover screw placed for the osseointegration phase. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to characterize the implant- ...

The increasing interest in the effect of strontium in bone tissue repair has promoted the development of bioactive materials with strontium release capability. According to literature, hybrid materials based on the system PDMS-SiO2 have been considered a plausible alternative as they present a mechanical behavior similar to the one of the human bone. The main purpose of this study was to obtain a biocompatible hybrid material with simultaneous calcium and strontium release capability. A hybrid material, ...

The macroalgae aquaculture industry has grown up in the last years, and new applications for macroalgae should be considered. In this work, sequential biological treatments as solid-state fermentation (SSF) by Aspergillus ibericus and enzymatic hydrolysis (EH) were applied to washed and unwashed Ulva rigida. SSF of unwashed macroalgae showed higher xylanase (359.8 U/g), cellulase (73.07 U/g) and β-glucosidase (14.9 U/g) activities per dry mass of macroalgae. After SSF, two strategies to carry out EH ...

Agricultural, forestry, and food industries produce large amounts of lignocellulosic wastes every year. Land disposal of these residues without proper treatment leads to environmental pollution and negative health effects. The recent advances in valorization of agro-industrial wastes by the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes under solid-state fermentation (SSF) are reviewed. SSF is a promising technology to produce lignocellulolytic enzymes. However, the large-scale feasibility is the main challenge ...

Seaweeds are valuable feedstocks with the potential to be used as ingredients in aquafeeds. However, their use are still limited, given their recalcitrant polysaccharide structure. To break this structure, a biotechnological approach such as solid-state fermentation (SSF) by filamentous fungi can be used, which simultaneously increases the nutritional value of the biomass. However, SSF has hardly been studied in seaweeds; thus, in this study, five different seaweeds (Gracilaria sp., Porphyra dioica, ...

The Tocantins-Araguaia Basin is one of the largest river systems in South America, located entirely within Brazilian territory. In the last decades, capital-concentrating activities such as agribusiness, mining, and hydropower promoted extensive changes in land cover, hydrology, and environmental conditions. Threats are escalating as poor environmental policies continue to be formulated, such as environmentally unsustainable ...

Osteoblast-like cell cultures have been used as in vitro models to study the interactions of bone tissue with biomaterials and their degradation products. This work reviews the effects of AISI 316L stainless steel (SS) corrosion products on the osteoblastic behavior of rat and human bone cell cultures. Results suggest that such products affect, in a dose-dependent manner, the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblastic cells; these effects depend on the developmental stage of the osteoblastic ...

Abstract Hybrid scaffolds composed of hydroxyapatite (HAp), in particular in its nanometric form (n‐HAp), and chitosan (CS) are promising materials for non‐load‐bearing bone graft applications. The main constraints of their production concern the successful implementation of the final purification/neutralization and sterilization steps. Often, the used purification strategies can compromise scaffold structural features, and conventional sterilization techniques can result in material's thermal degradation ...

An increase of the overall porosity was observed, from 79 ± 3% for the PLLA ...
