Melatonin, the main hormone produced by the pineal gland, is secreted in a circadian manner (24-hr period), and its oscillation influences several circadian biological rhythms, such as the regulation of clock genes expression (chronobiotic effect) and the modulation of several endocrine functions in peripheral tissues. Assuming that the circadian synchronization of clock genes can play a role in the regulation of energy metabolism and it is influenced by melatonin, our study was designed to assess ...

It has been proposed that polybasic peptides cause slower movement of ribosomes through an electrostatic interaction with the highly negative ribosome exit tunnel. Ribosome profiling data-the sequencing of short ribosome-bound fragments of mRNA-is a powerful tool for the analysis of mRNA translation. Using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model, we showed that reduced translation efficiency associated with polybasic protein sequences could be inferred from ribosome profiling. However, an ...

As proteins are synthesized, the nascent polypeptide must pass through a negatively charged exit tunnel. During this stage, positively charged stretches can interact with the ribosome walls and slow the translation. Therefore, charged polypeptides may be important factors that affect protein expression. To determine the frequency and distribution of positively and negatively charged stretches in different proteomes, the net charge was calculated for every 30 consecutive amino acid residues, which ...

The effects of the essential oil of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. (EOET) on guinea-pig tracheal smooth muscle were investigated. EOET (10 - 1000 μg/mL) relaxed the tracheal basal tonus with an EC50 value of 125.3 [52.2 - 300.9] μg/mL. Its maximal relaxation (40 ± 6 %) was significantly lower than that evoked by aminophylline (209 ± 34 %). The K+-(60 mM)-induced contractions were significantly reduced by both EOET (200 - 1000 μg/mL) and its main constituent 1,8-cineole (600 - 1000 μg/mL). Acetylcholine (1 μM)-induced contractions ...

The evaluation of cultivars using multi-environment trials (MET) is an important step in plant breeding programs. One of the objectives of these evaluations is to understand the genotype by environment interaction (GEI). A method of determining the effect of GEI on the performance of cultivars is based on studies of adaptability and stability. Initial studies were based on linear regression; however, these methodologies have limitations, mainly in trials with genetic or statistical unbalanced, heterogeneity ...

This study was undertaken to assess the vasorelaxant effects of thymol and carvacrol in rat isolated aorta and the putative mechanisms underlying these effects. Thymol and carvacrol produced a concentration‐dependent relaxation on the aortic ring preparations pre‐contracted using KCl (IC 50 value of 64.40 ± 4.41 and 78.80 ± 11.91 μ m , respectively) or using phenylephrine (PHE, 0.1 μ m ) (IC 50 value of 106.40 ± ...

The effects of the essential oil of Mentha x villosa (EOMV) was investigated in saponin-permeabilized fibres and in intact sartorius muscle of the toad. In intact muscle EOMV at concentrations from 1 to 100 μg/mL blocked the contraction induced by high (80 mM) potassium and induced potentiation of caffeine-induced muscle contraction. From 1 to 6 mg/mL EOMV elicited contraction in both depolarized (by 110 mM K+) and non-depolarized (4 mM K+) muscle fibres. This contraction was blocked by procaine. At ...

Gross primary production (GPP) is the total amount of fixed carbon and depends on vegetation health and water and energy availability. GPP has been monitored worldwide by flux towers and models that are coupled with remotely sensed data, such as by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Thus, our goal was to evaluate the Vegetation ...
