Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution exposure is a leading risk factor for adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity, and premature mortality. Quantification of PM2.5 oxidative potential (i.e., the ability of PM to promote oxidative reactions in solution) is a relatively new paradigm for exploring health risks associated with the various chemical compositions of ambient PM2.5. PM2.5 oxidative potential is commonly measured with the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay, ...

We have discovered both a red and a blue subpopulation of ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxy candidates in the Coma galaxy cluster. We analyzed deep F475W (Sloan g) and F814W (I) Hubble Space Telescope images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys Wide Field Channel as part of the Coma Cluster Treasury Survey and have fitted the light profiles of ∼5000 point-like sources in the vicinity of NGC 4874, one of the two central dominant galaxies of the Coma Cluster. Although almost all of these sources ...

The case is reported of a patient who initially presented with a dendritiform corneal ulcer that ultimately failed to heal and in which Mycobacterium chelonei was repeatedly cultured. The organism was sensitive only to kanamycin and amikacin; however, topical administration of these antibiotics failed to achieve a complete cure. Penetrating keratoplasty was ultimately required to eradicate the organism from the cornea.

The use of linear peptides as antigens for detection of serum antibodies has been studied using a sequence of the Borrelia burgdorferi protein, flagellin, and Lyme disease sera as a model. It was found that a novel presentation of the peptide as a hapten on the carrier protein, bovine serum albumin, in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay format can be successfully applied to distinguish between Lyme disease and control sera.

Objective Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. More than 50 million people in the United States have reported experiencing tinnitus, resulting in an estimated prevalence of 10% to 15% in adults. Despite the high prevalence of tinnitus and its potential significant effect on quality of life, there are no evidence‐based, multidisciplinary clinical practice guidelines to assist clinicians with management. The focus of this guideline is on tinnitus that is both bothersome ...

We describe genomic structures of 59 X-chromosome segmental duplications that include the proteolipid protein 1 gene (PLP1) in patients with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease. We provide the first report of 13 junction sequences, which gives insight into underlying mechanisms. Although proximal breakpoints were highly variable, distal breakpoints tended to cluster around low-copy repeats (LCRs) (50% of distal breakpoints), and each duplication event appeared to be unique (100 kb to 4.6 Mb in size). Sequence ...

Branching morphogenesis is a critical step in the development of many epithelial organs. The phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) pathway has been identified as a central component of this process but the precise role has not been fully established. Herein we sought to determine the role of PI3K in murine lung branching using a series of pharmacological inhibitors directed at this pathway. The pan-class I PI3K inhibitor ZSTK474 greatly enhanced the branching potential of whole murine lung explants as ...

Aurora A (also known as STK15/BTAK in humans), a putative oncoprotein naturally overexpressed in many human cancers, is a member of the conserved Aurora protein serine/threonine kinase family that is implicated in the regulation of G2–M phases of the cell cycle. In vitro studies utilizing antibody microinjection, siRNA silencing and small molecule inhibitors have indicated that Aurora A functions in early as well as late stages of mitosis. However, due to limitations in specificity of the techniques, ...

Primary osseous neoplasms of the thoracic and lumbar spine are uncommon lesions. Between 1965 and 1982, of 1971 patients with musculoskeletal neoplasms, only 29 (1.5%) had primary osseous tumors in these locations. There were eight children and 21 adults. Back pain was the most common complaint in 25 patients (86%), and neurologic symptoms or deficits were present in 16 patients (55%). All lesions were visible on routine spine roentgenograms, while computed tomography and myelography demonstrated spinal ...
