The nucleon-nucleon data are fitted by a boundary condition model interaction determined largely by field-theoretic forms. One and two pions, ϱ, ω, and η meson exchange adiabatic local potentials determine th interaction for r ⩾ 12μ where (1/μ) is the pion Compton wavelength. The two-pion-exchange contribution contains a degree of ambiguity measured by the parameters ξ and λ for the pion-ladder and nucleonpair diagrams respectively. The interaction at r0 is given by an energy-independent boundary condition ...

The effective Hamiltonian method for nuclear reactions described in an earlier paper with the same title, part I, is generalized so as to include all possible reaction types, as well as the effects arising from the identity of particles. The principal device employed, as in part I, is the projection operator which selects the open channel components of the wave function. It is found that the formal structure of part I providing a unified description for direct and compound nuclear reactions including ...

Motivated by a recent suggestion that an SU(3) selection rule may explain the narrow widths of some hypernuclear excitations in the Σ continuum, we re-examine the role of unitary symmetry in low energy baryon-baryon (BB) interactions. A direct examination of the BB scattering data indicates that SU(3) symmetry is broken, but leaves us with several alternative schemes for describing the mechanism of symmetry breaking. We study the one-boson exchange (OBE) model in some detail, and relate the usual ...

The pion has emerges as the main feature of nuclear structure beyond the traditional description in terms of neutrons and protons. It manifests itself in a number of areas which are normally only loosely interlinked, but intimately related to the pion-nucleon and pion-nuclear interactions: the nucleon-nucleon force; the nuclear many-body problem; nuclear electromagnetic and weak interactions; nuclear spinisospin interactions; pion-nucleus scattering and reactions; etc. This book is a systematic ...

In 1983, The American Physical Society formed a study group on radionuclide release from severe accidents at nuclear power plants to "review the adequacy of the technical base upon which the phenomenological models for radionuclide release from postulated severe reactor ac- cidents are constructed, the adequacy of the models them- selves, and the correct use of the complex computer codes that incorporate these models in the analyses of accident sequences."The impetus to the existing research came ...

The theory of statistical multistep direct reactions is revised by including an energy average of the wave functions involved. As a consequence it is found that the transition matrix element which must be used at each step is in the DWBA form, resolving an important difficulty of the theory.

The theory of nuclear reactions is extended so as to include a statistical treatment of multi-step processes. Two types are distinguished, the multi-step compound and the multi-step direct. The wave functions for the system are grouped according to their complexity. The multi-step direct process involves explicitly those states which are open, while the multi-step compound involves those which are bound. In addition to the random phase assumption which is applied differently to the multi-step direct ...

The calculated elastic scattering of 1.04-GeV protons by 208Pb, 58Ni, and 40Ca is compared with experiment. The effects of the spin-orbit potential, Pauli and short-range correlations, variations in the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude at 0° are found to have similar effects. Further experiments are required before these effects can be disentangled. Changes of the neutron density compared to the proton density can be distinguished. The proton polarization ...

A quantum foundation is developed for the methods employed in the calculation of the pre-equilibrium component of the energy spectrum of nuclear reaction products. It involves the application of the statistical theory of nuclear reactions to chained doorway states.

A relatively quick and correspondingly rough procedure is developed to deal with complex nuclear excitations. This procedure exploits the existence in nuclei of collective excitation (phonons) by replacing the many fermion degrees of freedom with fewer boson degrees of freedom. The emerging picture is that of an interacting boson gas. The boson-boson interaction and boson annihilation graphs are explicitly constructed. It is shown that the interacting boson approximation (IBA) gives good results when ...

The recent data on both elastic and inelastic scattering of 1 GeV protons by 40Ca and 208Pb are analyzed by means of the first term of the multiple scattering series for the optical potential and the DWIA. Theory and experiment agree quite well. Coulomb effects are taken into account. Neutron and proton ground state densities given by Hartree-Fock calculations employing a density-dependent Hamiltonian and which provide a good fit to elastic electron scattering are used. The Tassie form factors, ...

The "incoherent droplet model" is used to explain recent experiments on the fragmentation of 16O during high energy collision with a Be target. In the 16O rest frame the fragments have a universal iso tropic Gaussian momentum distribution, independent to the masses of the fragments. The half-width of the Gaussian is 〈p〉 (A3n), where, A is the mass number of the nucleus, n is the total number of fragments, and 〈p2〉 is the mean square momentum of individual nucleons in the fragmenting nucleus.
