Previous studies have combined climate, crop and economic models to examine the impact of climate change on agricultural production and food security, but results have varied widely due to differences in models, scenarios and input data. Recent work has examined (and narrowed) these differences through systematic model intercomparison using a high-emissions pathway to highlight the differences. This paper extends that analysis to explore a range of plausible socioeconomic scenarios and emission pathways. ...

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) interventions have been shown to assist in coping and improve patient responses to symptoms. Specifically, the presence of an animal has been found to lower anxiety and motivate participation in therapy. We aimed to explore the acceptability of and experience of AAT during individual breast cancer counseling sessions.Patients undertaking counseling with a therapy dog present were invited to participate in the study. Patients were individually interviewed and asked to ...

Major thoracic wall resections require the implantation of foreign materials for reconstruction and stabilization. Recently, biological collagen matrixes have emerged as an alternative to the routinely used synthetic materials. Retrospectively, we analyzed our initial experience of chest wall reconstruction on large defects using a cross-linked porcine dermal acellular collagen matrix mesh with a thickness of 1.5 mm. Six sarcoma patients with a mean age of 46 (22-66) years underwent chest wall resections. ...

Objectives Inflammatory rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (iRMDs) are associated with increased systemic bone loss that is mediated by chronic inflammation, treatment with glucocorticoids (GCs) and other factors. Our objective was to analyse the impact of variables that influence osteoporosis (OP) in patients with iRMD treated with GC. Methods Rh-GIOP (acronyme) is a prospective observational cohort study investigating bone health in consecutive patients with iRMD and current or prior GC treatment. ...

Abstract —Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that arteriosclerotic changes can be induced in normocholesterolemic rabbits by immunization with mycobacterial heat shock protein (hsp) 65. To further investigate the immunologic mechanisms underlying such vascular lesions, 39 male New Zealand White rabbits were treated by triple immunization with fortified Freund’s complete adjuvant containing 5 mg/mL Mycobacterium tuberculosis as a source of hsp65 and simultaneous immunosuppressive therapy ...

Background: Glucocorticoids (GCs) can cause osteoporosis (OP). Prior observational research on bone density and the effects of GCs in polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and vasculitides is scarce and inconclusive. Methods: Rh-GIOP is a prospective cohort study of bone health in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases. In this cross-sectional baseline analysis, we focused on patients with PMR and different forms of vasculitides. Multivariable linear regression was used to model the effect of current ...

Land use is at the core of various sustainable development goals. Long-term climate foresight studies have structured their recent analyses around five socio-economic pathways (SSPs), with consistent storylines of future macroeconomic and societal developments; however, model quantification of these scenarios shows substantial heterogeneity in land-use projections. Here we build on a recently developed sensitivity approach to identify how future land use depends on six distinct socio-economic drivers ( ...

Background Severe pectus excavatum may be present in combination with cardiac conditions requiring open-heart surgery. The best strategy for this situation has been debated controversially. Patients and Methods In a retrospective study, we analyzed all our patients undergoing concurrent pectus excavatum correction and open-heart surgery. Results Ten patients aged 9 to 70 years underwent a simultaneous combined surgical procedure between 2001 and 2013. Indications for cardiac surgery were various forms of ...

This article suggests that undergraduate research can help advance the science of psychology. We introduce a hypothetical "question-list paradigm" as a mechanism to do this. Each year, thousands of undergraduate projects are completed as part of the educational experience. Although many of these studies may not contain sufficient contributions for publication, they provide a good test of the replicability of established findings across populations at different institutions and geographic locations. ...

Durum wheat is more susceptible to Fusarium head blight (FHB) than other types or classes of wheat. The disease is one of the most devastating in wheat; it reduces yield and end-use quality and contaminates the grain with fungal mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON). A panel of 265 Canadian and European durum wheat cultivars, as well as breeding and experimental lines, were tested in artificially inoculated field environments (2019–2022, inclusive) and two greenhouse trials (2019 and 2020). The trials ...

Historical increases in agricultural production were achieved predominantly by large increases in agricultural productivity. Intensification of crop and livestock production also plays a key role in future projections of agricultural land use. Here, we assess and discuss projections of crop yields by global agricultural land-use and integrated assessment models. To evaluate these crop yield projections, we compare them to empirical data on attainable yields by employing a linear and plateauing continuation ...

Food insecurity can be directly exacerbated by climate change due to crop-production-related impacts of warmer and drier conditions that are expected in important agricultural regions1–3. However, efforts to mitigate climate change through comprehensive, economy-wide GHG emissions reductions may also negatively affect food security, due to indirect impacts on prices and supplies of key agricultural commodities4–6. Here we conduct a multiple model assessment on the combined effects of climate change ...
