ABSTRACT The superorder Galeomorph comprises the orders Heterodontiformes, Orectolobiformes, Lamniformes, and Carcharhiniformes. Recent morphological and molecular support that it is a monophyletic taxon. The phyletic relationship within the Galeomorphi are also ... the attachment through a tendon in basal squalomorphs. Heterodontiformes and Orectolobiformes share particular variations in the position ...

The complete mitochondrial genome of the Zebra bullhead shark Heterodontus zebra was first presented in this study. It was 16,720 bp in length, encoding 37 genes and one control region. The gene order and translate orientation were identical to most vertebrates. Overall nucleotide base composition of H. zebra mitogenome was 31.6% A; 26.8% C; 13.1% G and 28.4% T. Total 27 bp overlaps and 20 bp short intergenic spaces were found in 17 gene junctions in the genome. Two start codons (ATG and GTG) and ...

The early history of heterodontid sharks is documented mainly by isolated teeth. So far, three different heterodontid genera have been recorded from the Jurassic: Proheterodontus from theMiddle Jurassic of England (and probably Upper Jurassic of France), Paracestracion from the Early to Late Jurassic of England, Belgium and S. Germany, and Heterodontus from the Upper Jurassic of South Germany. Paracestracion is known by isolated teeth in the Early and Middle Jurassic and by articulated skeletons ...

Abstract In two species of Heterodontus , H. portusjacksoni and H. galeatus , the first scales to develop form two opposing rows along the caudal fin axis on both the left and right sides of the fin. The opposing rows originate from an initial scale located on either side of the posterior tip of the caudal fin, with subsequent scales erupting in a posterior to anterior direction along the tail axis. These scale rows may strengthen tail movements, providing aeration in the egg case, but are lost later ...

A new species of heterodontiform shark is described from three specimens collected in the Gulf of Masira, Central Oman, at a depth of 72 m. A member of the genus Heterodontus, it differs from the eight currently recognized congeners in having four dark saddles distributed more or less equally along the head and body, relatively small, darkly pigmented dorsal fins, each with a white distal streak, large pectoral fins, and a unique egg case, with two long tendrils extending from its base and flanges ...

A new species of hornshark is described from northwestern Australia based on six whole specimens and a single egg case. Heterodontus marshallae n. sp. was previously considered to be conspecific with H. zebra from the Western Pacific. The new species differs from H. zebra in the sequence of its NADH2 gene, several morphological characters, egg case morphology and key coloration features. Despite the coloration being similar between H. marshallae n. sp. and H. zebra, i.e., pale background with 22 ...

The spiracle of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) is a gill-slit-derived tube located behind the eye. Its inner structure was well studied in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, but its entire morphology has rarely been characterized and is poorly understood. The present study shows the three-dimensional morphology of the spiracular tube for the first time, using resin injection and CT scanning, in the Japanese bullhead shark. The spiracular tube is characterized by the presence ...

Abstract Many of the egg cases of oviparous chondrichthyans remain unknown and undescribed in the literature. Egg cases can be a useful taxonomic character for species distinction and can be a valuable indicator of a species distribution in the field. In this study, the egg cases for 9 of the 10 nominal species of Heterodontus are described and compared, and the terminology and methodology for studying them are standardized. Heterodontus egg cases are distinct and easily identifiable from other ...
