Measurements of atomic hydrogen density profiles in Heliotron E plasmas were performed, where attention was focussed on the anisotropy of the profiles in the poloidal cross section. Obtained penetration profiles of atomic hydrogen agreed well with the Monte Carlo code calculations of the penetration of Franck-Condon neutrals when averaged electron densities \bar n e are larger than 10 19 m -3 . For \bar n e <10 19 m -3 , however, experimental profiles decreased steeper than calculated ones. Degree of the ...

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is one of the most common genetic disorders and a major cause of renal death or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring regular hemodialysis. The responsible genes recently have been cloned; however, genetic factors influencing the rate of progression to ESRD in patients with PKD have yet to be defined. Several studies have shown increased activity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in patients with PKD. In addition, genetic polymorphisms of the RAS have been associated ...

GaAs surfaces were successfully passivated by utilizing an ultrathin Si3N4/Si interface control layer (ICL) formed by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and in situ electron-cyclotron-resonance (ECR) plasma-assisted nitridation. Detailed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that optimization of the ECR plasma process led to the realization of well-defined Si3N4/Si double-layer structure without change in chemical status of GaAs surface. As compared with the clean MBE surface, surface Fermi ...

While high-colibactin-producing Escherichia coli is thought to be associated with colorectal oncogenesis, this study is complicated part due to an inability to isolate colibactin adequately. Here, we created fluorescent probes activated by ClbP, the colibactin-maturing peptidase, to identify high-colibactin-producing strains. Our probe served as a valuable clinical diagnostic tool that allowed simple high-throughput diagnostic screening of clinical samples. Furthermore, the probe also allowed identification ...

The Escherichia coli strain that is known to produce the genotoxic secondary metabolite colibactin is linked to colorectal oncogenesis. Therefore, understanding the properties of such colibactin-positive E. coli and the molecular mechanism of oncogenesis by colibactin may provide us with opportunities for early diagnosis or prevention of colorectal oncogenesis. While there have been major advances in the characterization of colibactin-positive E. coli and the toxin it produces, the infection route ...

Colibactin is a polyketide-nonribosomal peptide hybrid secondary metabolite that can form interstrand cross-links in double-stranded DNA. Colibactin-producing Escherichia coli has also been linked to colorectal oncogenesis. Thus, there is a strong interest in understanding the role colibactin may play in oncogenesis. Here, using the high-colibactin-producing wild-type E. coli strain we isolated from a clinical sample with the activity-based fluorescent probe we developed earlier, we were able to ...

Colibactin is a polyketide-peptide genotoxin produced by enteric bacteria such as E. coli, and is considered to contribute to the development of colorectal cancer. We previously isolated E. coli strains from Japanese colorectal cancer patients, and in the present study we investigated the genotoxic potency of the colibactin-producing (clb+) E. coli strains that carry the polyketide synthases "pks" gene cluster (pks+) and an isogenic clb- mutant in which the colibactin-producing ability is impaired. ...

Abstract Introduction Colibactin is a small genotoxic molecule produced by enteric bacteria, including certain Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) strains harbored in the human large intestine. This polyketide-peptide genotoxin is considered to contribute to the development of colorectal cancer. The colibactin-producing ( clb + ) microorganisms possess a 54-kilobase genomic island ( clb gene cluster). In the present study, to assess the distribution of the clb gene cluster, genotyping analysis was carried out among ...

Photooxidation reactions on the solid films of naphthacene and rubrene were studied by Penning ionization electron spectroscopy (PIES) and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). PIES was found to reveal the processes of the surface reaction within the first layer selectively. On the other hand, the UPS result showed that the photooxidation reaction proceeded into the inner layers as oxygen molecules diffused into the solid. The present study indicates that the reaction process from the surface to the ...

The He* Penning ionization electron spectra (PIES) and He I UV photoelectron spectra (UPS) of CO and Fe(CO)5 were measured. The relative intensity of the bands in PIES was shown to give information on the spatial electron distribution of individual molecular orbitals. On the basis of the information together with the results of the population analysis, most of the bands in the UPS of Fe(CO)5 were assigned. The usefulness of PIES in the study of stereochemistry was indicated.

Owing to the strong antibonding d–π interactions the metallic e1″ orbitals in Mn(C5H5)2, Ni(C5H5)2, and especially Co(C5H5)2, show rather diffuse electron distributions. In contrast, the Cp π-derived e1″ orbitals exhibit compact ...

A device simulator, SPECTRA, and an optics simulator, TOCCATA, were developed for three-dimensional (3-D) optical and electrical analysis of a charge-coupled device (CCD). SPECTRA solves Poisson's and time dependent current continuity equations by a novel Gummel's method. Since the basic parameters are potential and exponential functions of the quasi-Fermi level of electrons and holes, the solution can be obtained in a stable and rapid way compared to the conventional method. TOCCATA calculates the ...

Summary Light is a powerful synchronizer of the circadian rhythms, and bright light therapy is known to improve metabolic and hormonal status of circadian rhythm sleep disorders, although its mechanism is poorly understood. In the present study, we revealed that light induces gene expression in the adrenal gland via the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)-sympathetic nervous system. Moreover, this gene expression accompanies the surge of plasma and brain corticosterone levels without accompanying activation of ...

Abstract In this paper, the applicability of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) contactless capacitance-voltage ( C-V ) measurement method is evaluated for use in non-destructive characterization of crystal growth and device processing steps for the compound semiconductor heterostructure microelectronics. The UHV gap length between the sample surface and the field plate was made by an optical measurement using the Goos–Haenchen effect, and its accuracy was discussed by a theoretical calculation. Then, zero-bias ...

Abstract Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients develop various life‐threatening extracolonic comorbidities that appear individually or within a family. This diversity can be explained by the localization of the adenomatous polyposis coli ( APC ) variant, but few reports provide definitive findings about genotype–phenotype correlations. Therefore, we investigated FAP patients and the association between the severe phenotypes and APC variants. Of 247 FAP patients, 126 patients from 85 families ...

The theoretical temporal resolution limit tT of a silicon photodiode (Si PD) is 11.1 ps. We call "super temporal resolution" the temporal resolution that is shorter than that limit. To achieve this resolution, Germanium is selected as a candidate material for the photodiode (Ge PD) for visible light since the absorption coefficient of Ge for the wavelength is several tens of times higher than that of Si, allowing a very thin PD.
