We have studied the centrality dependence of charged-particle forward-backward multiplicity correlation strength in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathit{NN}}}=200$ GeV with a parton and hadron cascade model, PACIAE, based on PYTHIA. The calculated results are compared with the STAR data. The experimentally observed correlation strength characteristics, ($1$) the approximately flat pseudorapidity dependence in central collisions and ($2$) the monotonous decrease with decreasing centrality, are reproduced ...

A three dimensional finite element computer simulation has been performed to assess the effects of release waves in normal impact soft-recovery experiments when a star-shaped flyer plate is used. Their effects on the monitored velocity-time profiles have been identified and their implications in the interpretation of wave spreading and spall signal events highlighted. The calculation shows that the star-shaped flyer plate indeed minimizes the magnitude of edge effects. The major perturbation to ...

Broken thin brittle plates like windows and windshields are ubiquitous in our environment. When impacted locally, they typically present a pattern of cracks extending radially outward from the impact point. We study the variation of the pattern of cracks by performing controlled transverse impacts on brittle plates over a broad range of impact speed, plate thickness, and material properties, and we establish from experiments a global scaling law for the number of radial cracks incorporating all ...

The increasing acceptance of the efficacy and validity of applied games, and specifically games for health, has fostered the growth of new ideas and applications. Engineers and game developers are working on a range of products that integrate new electronics that can detect physiological states with game or game-like interfaces. These devices can record and transmit physical and behavioral data as well as motivate participants to modify behavior in prosocial and prohealth ways. The U.S. and European ...

Prepartying and drinking game playing are associated with excessive alcohol consumption and alcohol-related negative consequences in college populations; however, research exploring the prevalence of these high risk drinking contexts among high school students, and how such engagement may impact both high school and subsequent college drinking risk, is lacking. The current study, which is the first study to assess prepartying during high school, examined how engaging in either prepartying or drinking game playing during high school was associated with risky ...
