The hyper Rayleigh scattering (HRS) method was applied to determine the absolute value of second-order hyperpolarizabilities ((beta) ) of stilbazolium p-toluenesulfonates and related ionic species in methanol. In general, the (beta) values of stilbazolium derivatives become large with increasing wavelength of absorption maximum and are 1.1 X 10 -28 - 3.9 X 10 -28 esu, i.e., 3 - 10 times larger than (beta) of p-nitroaniline. By way of exception, halogenated stilbazoliums showed rather larger (beta) compared with ...

Abstract An in‐plane electrophoretic display has been developed aiming at a paper‐like‐display. Prototype displays exhibit a bright and clear appearance just like copies on paper, excellent stability against deformation and memory behavior. Essential characteristics for passive matrix addressing based on a control electrode system are achieved in structural or electric barrier type implementations.

Abstract It is known that poly(methacrylic acid) and poly(ethylene oxide) interact with each other through hydrogen bonds and form polymer complexes in an aqueous medium. The initially formed polymer complexes were considered to exist in a semi‐stable state, and they aggregated through desolvation and hydrophobic interaction. A successive aggregation of polymer complexes was observed following the rapid initial complexation. The aggregation was affected by some chemical factors e.g., polymer concentration, ...

Abstract Several different structures of conducting polymers have been synthesized from diacetylenes including non-substituted one, i.e. butadiyne (BDy). Semiconducting polymer single crystals were obtained by thermally or y-ray induced doping-polymerization of diacetylenes, where chemical doping had been made before rigid polymer crystal lattice was formed. Conductivities attained were in the range of 10−-4 ∼ −7 S/cm, depending on compounds (2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol p-toluenesulfonate, 1,6-dicarSazoyl- ...

The novel organic ion-complex crystal composed of protonated merocyanine and p-toluenesulfonate anion, i.e., 1-methyl-4-(2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)vinyl)pyridinium 4-toluenesulfonate (MC-PTS), was synthesized for second-order nonlinear optics. Crystal structure analysis revealed that MC-PTS crystallized in the space group of P1, i.e., the most desired space group for waveguide applications where molecular dipoles are perfectly aligned in one direction. It was also pointed out that the tetrahedral sulfonate ...

Abstract Nonlinear optical susceptibility χ (3) of polydiacetylenes has been evaluated by third harmonic generation. First, in order to obtain the χ (3) tensor component along the polymer main chain, thin single crystals of two representative polydiacetylenes, poly‐PTS and poly‐DCHD were made by utilization of sampling technique in microscopy, i.e., the microtome cutting of single crystal embedded in plastic resin. The THG intensity observed was proportional to cos 8 θ, where θ was the angle between ...

Abstract In order to obtain the polydiacetylenes having π-conjugation between polymer backbone and side chains, many of unsymmetrical diphenylbutadiyne derivatives with trifluoromethyl substituents on one of the phenyl rings have been synthesized. Among them, 1-(3-(methylamino) phenyl)-4-(3, 5-bis (trifluoromethyl)-phenyl) butadiyne (MADF) was found to be topochemically polymerized with complete conversion into the polymer single crystals. Spectroscopies and X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed ...

Merocyanine - p-toluenesulufonic acid complex was investigated for the crystal structure and the optical properties. The molecules are crystallized in the space group P1 so that the crystal exhibits a large optical nonlinearity . The second order nonlinear optical coefficient d11 measured by means of the Maker Fringe ifiethod is 314pm/V as a pristine data and 500pm/V after the correction of scattering and is greater than d11 of 2-inethyl-4-nitroaniline.

Inherently conductive metallophalocyanine crystals were syntheesized by electrolysis. Potassium dicyanocobalt(III)phthalocyanine was electrolyzed at +1.1 V vs. AgAgCl reference electrode in acetonitrile solution without any supporting electrolytes. After several hours, single crystals (> 4mm) were grown on the anode surface. Elementary analysis and infrared measurement revealed that these crystals were composed of only cyanocobalt(III)phthalocyanine. The molecular arrangement was estimated by X-ray ...

Abstract A series of tetra- or octasubstituted phthalocyaninatocobalt derivatives were prepared and their oxidation behaviors were examined in relation to the nature of substituents. The oxidation potentials of phthalocyanines, especially those of rings were affected by the nature of both substituents and axial ligands. These oxidation potentials were in a linear relation with the Hammett’s constants for substituents or axial ligands. The electrocrystallization proceeded when an oxidation potential ...

Abstract Poly‐1,4‐bis(3‐acetamidephenyl)‐1,3‐butadiyne, i.e., a topochemically obtained polydiacetylene for which one can expect π‐conjugation between polymer backbone and substituents, has been examined as a candidate of conducting polymers. Upon iodine doping, the polymer film attained the conductivity of 4.8 × 10 −2 S/cm, i.e., about three orders of magnitude greater than those of other polydiacetylene films which have no such π‐conjugation.

The fabrication of polar structures of thin films has been demonstrated for the molecular moieties of 2-methy1-4-nitroaniline and two diacetylenes, by alternately depositing their and arachidic acid's monolayers. It has been found that the packing of one of the diacetylenes in such a polar film differs from that in the single component Y-type film, resulting in a different polymerization behavior.

Abstract Electrical memory switching has been observed in the metal/Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film/metal sandwich structure with a noble metal base electrode. Switching from a non-conducting OFF state to a conducting ON state (WRITE operation) and/or switching back to the OFF state (ERASE) are/is possible by applying adequate voltage; however, when the voltage is reduced, both OFF and ON states remain the same. A memory system utilizing an LB film and a scanning tunnelling microscope, has been proposed.

Abstract A series of oxidation potentials of substituted metallophthalocyanines are examined with cyclic voltammetry. Relation between oxidation potential and the Hammett's constant of substituents is found to be linear for both octa- and tetrasubstituted derivatives. The oxidation potential shift is found to be calculated by electron-withdrawing or donating ability of substituents. Electrocrystallization of these compounds gives crystals which are composed of only cyanometallophthalocyanine. Crystals ...
